1:00Hello, my babes, my dancers, my lovers, my artists, my friends, my athletes. Welcome back to Vanity Fair. My name is Chris Faire, or you're watching on YouTube. I'm not quite sure today. We're talking, like we always do, about pop culture weird things. We're talking reality shows, docuseries. We're talking untold Reagan. Reagan? Untold Reagan. Breaking badly. What this was about, untold Ronald Reagan. Like a documentary about him. It's not. It's about the Australian break dancing, Olympian. That took our breaths away, because we were laughing so hard. At someone who thought that they should break dance on a national stage. That's what happened. And we're going to learn why. Why? How? Why? How and why? What is the thought process of this person?

2:01Did this person think this person was good? Did this person think this person was worthy? How did the world line up in such a way that this person got to be a break dancer in the Olympics? That's why anyone would push play on this Netflix doc. Now, I'm going to tell you right up. Not a good doc. Not a great one. And by that, I mean, it's not unbiased about its subject. It very much feels like the purpose of this was to give a different side. Slash. Almost like a PR puff piece

3:02about Raygon. Who I want to keep saying Raygon, but I could say it's Raygon. It's just her name is Rachel. And she, you know, dresses like some sort of best-by soccer player. That's the look. Um, this documentary is not great. And you can know that if you watch documentaries in the first five minutes because it starts with a montage of social media clamor. And it's something we've seen. And it's the exact same sort of means to an end. Screenshots of absolute frenzy, chaos of internet and memes and tweets and posts being like at one point people were talking a lot about this thing. Now, here's a thing.

4:04The internet has now been part of our lives for decades. So much show that we all see the pattern, which is that surely the internet hounds itself for a dopamine hit like a weird video or something for us all to take in. Think about and comment on because it's a way of connection. It's like why there was water cooler talk. It's why at one point we had a monoculture when it came to television watching and that story where other people are privy to them interests us because then we can talk about it. And that's kind of like the internet stories that took over what used to be our friends

5:09pop up like they do and they die so fast. It's banana ramas and it's so heightened right because when an internet story hits it's definitely loud. Music it's everywhere and certainly algorithms make it seem that way. And surely something new comes pushes it out and then it's like did that even happen. So by the time this documentary is coming out, none of us care about her. None of us care about this. In fact, there's so much happening in the world that to watch a montage of people talking about this dumb break dancers like, oh my god, no one cares. But then the documentary takes a turn. And that turn is that we get introduced to her husband, this guy named Sammy sex who looks like he's a curly hair. It's like very like

6:11he doesn't write just gemstone character. You know what I'm saying? Like he says that he had to change his name from Sammy sex to something else because he was an MC at kids events and he is the real one that was the break dancer. He got wildly inspired watching that 80s dock breaking so funny. We're obviously talking about a documentary right now and this one pales in comparison to some of the best kind of like a documentaries we've seen and there are just so many seminal weird cool documentaries from the 70s 80s and 90s like remember like sex drugs rock and roll and that one with the kids and obviously gray gardens you know, there's like, you know, yeah, there's like oh my god, yeah, there's just like Paris's burning I say the one with the kids was like there is something else with like kids and they were like fucking

7:15I forgot was called sex drugs and rock and roll. There's another one with kids fucking not kids. You know, I'm saying teens likes 17 like in New York City or something like like where was not. How was it called? Yeah, there's just like there's yeah, there's well, there's yeah, anyway, okay, so moving on all that to say breaking the dance documentary which was about break dancing underground really honey fucking hit Sammy as a white kid in Australia. I mean he saw that and he was like that's it. Those are my people gotta get to them you know, and so he does what any like hard and break dancer would do he starts working as a proactive sales person. I forgot about proactive. God, I forgot about proactive.

8:16For some reason I never use proactive. I mean I say I used to act to 10 proactive was everywhere. Oh my god. Yeah, just like tell them. There was telemarketers for proactive. I guess I don't remember that I definitely remember there was like infomercials and there was like a obviously a subscription service Jesus life was so different. Anyway, so he is working at proactive and there is someone else there and he meets this person and that's ray gun and the her name is Rachel like I said now. Let's keep calling her Rachel now. So there's like dark I close up shots where he meets her and then you know he just tells her that there's this thing called breaking and that's break dancing be boying be grilling you know like the culture and Rachel's like oh show tell me more and then she like goes to event to dance off a battle and she sees

9:16this one lady who's like not really talking within the lady dances and Rachel is just like oh my god that lady gets a dance and she's not doing ballet. She's like I just like the fact that gender is irrelevant and like oh she's gonna go back and start talking about she I'll tell you one thing about Rachel honey. I've never lived in Australia but she is very affected by gender all the time like she lives and like she is she feels yeah she gender is her thing like she is highly feminist in a certain way. Okay The best part of this documentary are her parents Russell and Beverly and Russell and Beverly feel very detached from Rachel. First of all we've never seen them together.

10:18They're just always canutling and like giggling together in confessionals and it feels like they have like such a good life together and it certainly feels like they sort of like it feels like Rachel's one of 27 kids and they just did what they had to do and that's one of the 27. That's her parents vibe the entire time. They love each other though. It's like you know which one's that one? Okay. She had done a lot of like ballet and tap growing up so that's why when she saw breaking she was like girls don't have to be on their tippy toes. McDonald's is putting value back on the menu. Break dancing people in Australia. Now Chris Ferris is going to have to use me like of course there has to be. A because there's a lot of people in this world. B because dancers get everywhere and it's like an art form. And you know it's. An art form that like is a little later on in this world and we're in a digital age like how could you not get good at something. It's a very popular art form you would just have to. You know go around the people that are that good. I mean sure I just and I'll start with. I think I'll start with the artist's. I think I'll start with the artist's.

13:20Go around the people that are that good. I mean sure I just in Australia is huge. The other thing about Australia I find. As I find Australian artists to be top god damn tier. Like I feel like Australian dancers actors like I think Australian artists like comedians like they give a lot of money for the art and they are like. I just think that they. When push comes to shove. I think that Australians create a lot of great art. And so I think that's a great. Great dancers surely there's good. Other dancers and like you know. It's. Dance at a certain stage becomes less subjective and more objective of just about technique and stuff like that. So okay having said that. We are like okay we're going to meet two of the people in the scene so we can understand the lay the land. And there's some like curly hair girl she like is really cute like almost looks like. What's that curly hair brown hair girl who's like Pamela add lawns daughter that's like a big deal now Odessa.

14:26You know I'm talking about girl she has that girls hair and they call her tiny locks she was a year ahead of Rachel I guess in the scene. The other thing about this doc is that they're like. Anytime we show you a name we're going to either choose to show it to you a normal thought or we'll show it to you in this like graffiti file that looks like it's glitch. Like neon glitch like oh my god it's hard to read. So we jump back to 2016 battle of the year. She tries to dance and she gets eaten alive you know she's really bad. And tiny locks such to say this thing there's no easy props that be girls are fighting to be seen because there's not a lot of them that what had happened was because there weren't a lot of them sometimes when there be a be girl people would just start clapping and so that be girl with things that you be really good. And there be like a knowing thing because if you are good it's just it takes away from us if you are just getting accolades or being shitty and then low key tiny locks is being like and that person is Rachel.

15:29So I did there I said it without saying it said it I said it though. Then we meet another lady she has blonde hair her name is Flix and she was like you know the first be girl one of the first be girl battle people. And when she said that she saw the Olympic. Routine she said she felt offended and embarrassed by it. Yeah. So we go back to Rachel honey who is obviously dating Sammy and once his approval. Or is also does really you knew it her and Sammy have a very weird interesting relationship sometimes I sort of makes me feel like it's Whitney's and like Whitney's dude from mom talk but also like something else. He's like okay first of all again it starts with so much of Sammy that you're like who the fuck are you and why are you talking so much are you producing this documentary.

16:30Who are you how good okay. Because then it became this thing where I'm like okay if her whole thing is like being a feminist and all that stuff your whole thing is that you just like. And then it's some dude and became obsessed with the thing that he was obsessed with and now you both do the thing that he's obsessed with and neither of you do it well that's the story. I think moving on but I think that's the story. So we jump back Rachel is obviously getting really into this scene and then so she's like well I'm going to do you know the most important thing one does I'm going to start researching and writing theories about it. D in it but really the PhD isn't in like breaking as much as it's like her ideas of gender within the very small breaking scene that she has witnessed in Australia.

D territorial is the way that she had I'm sorry they say the name of her thesis statement and for two things Chris Vera is like equal marks equal amounts dumb and smart and I haven't gotten my PhD and so anyone who has got less than this is a smart thing for her to do on the other hand some of the verbiage when you get to those like higher echelon levels of academia are so. A lead a sense to what sounding like her thesis payment sounds something like the D territory was I the a territorialization of gender in the B boy seen like Colin one B girls journey into womanhood or so it's like not that but something like very similar to that where you're like oh my god god bless it where I'm like.

18:51It just feels like you are common during this topic. Just to like in your eyes like you just this is your experience of this world and topic that you are only now mildly familiar with. And it's like kind of in a cringy way it's interesting it's like. If you ever want to write in Hollywood if you ever want to write in New York you want to write narrative like personal work that you know. Either like a fiction or something but it's like yourself if you want to sell it and you haven't sold maybe something before the best thing that they tell you to do is to write what you know and it's because. You will have the best way to talk people into buying your script literally producers and or people by saying that only you.

20:04Through the experiences and places you are in your life could tell this story because somehow you are the expert or you are the person that can like lead someone into this world and I feel like. For instance I can't like. Well I'm just going to start playing pickle ball like I went to a lesson and so let me bring you into the world pickle ball like you're like i'm sure there's a lot of people that could do better and then he ever saw me in the court and you'd be like pitch what get off the court you know. But you know there are things where I can let me show you the world of alternative comedy in LA or producing your own show or weird camp drag theater or improv or you know Lebanese deputy tallage is why I wrote my woman woman show about being Lebanese deputy when I'm 15 because I think that that is a very specific world that I know a lot about and not a lot of people do and I know better than other people.

21:09I know what it's like to be a Lebanese deputy taught in the late 90s in Southern California specifically how to juggle being very much American but also this other culture and also how to deal with having to come out to society and being a woman while also not having a mother figure in your life that's what my stories about why because I feel like it's very obviously me only I can say it I have the authority on it. That's why I feel like yeah like she's someone who wants to be the authority on something that she doesn't have claim to. And yet being the authority on it having that is just that she also wants a certain level of fame or acknowledgement right but it's cheap. Because she's not worked for it and she's not good at the thing that she wants to be the thing the best at so it's like it's so but this okay so anyway that's just you would just read her thesis and be like girl you are insufferable really something else about Rachel is that throughout this documentary you're like what do you look like your face looks different every time I see you I don't know what she looks like.

22:28She has one of those faces that is just neither here nor there. You know and I think that I feel bad to say this because she's someone who has that kind of face and would get mad at you if you didn't remember her and you had met her and the problem is she is exactly that like she is. Her face is immemorable. You wouldn't be able to like. Glue it there if you try there's another are no discernible features that align in such a way that can like imprint her on you so every time they show her I'm like okay brown. Okay, she's like she's like. It's weird so interesting weird. Yeah, I'm I'm not saying she's ugly I'm not saying she's pretty I think I just can't even tell you what she looks like brown hair it's like what.

23:31Such a it's like a blank I don't know it's big it's blank it's like. Okay alright so it's like her battle history of wins okay just kidding haha. Her advisor for her thesis statement said that it was ambitious when I want to be like can you just be honest. I don't know indulgent. I think that was a better obnoxious. I did write it down de territory a rising gender and Sidney's break dancing scene colon a B girls experience of the boy. Okay so guess what. Her experience in the D territory is I think I can't even fucking say I keep trying so hard the territory rising.

24:42Her experience. Which I think would be very different and also should be a footnote to this for any other female that wants to like be like what's it like is that. Her husband Sammy coaches her so I just don't think that's real because in like most females would be like what's it like in the scene are not going to have their own husband coach them. Also he's not good. He's good. Who why is he coaching you. Why is the blind leading the blind. But they're you know it's like we never this is the problem. No one with any. Dancing credibility will be caught dead on this documentary. So we never get to see truly high quality dancing in Sydney.

25:43The only good dancing that we see are the clips from the Olympics that they show that we assume they get the rights to because they are the Olympic quote like things. They never even really they never interview any of the people that were other Olympians from the other countries. That you battled not anything they never interview any well known be boy or be girl period. Remember when we all used to watch so you think it dance. Remember that guy fill up like. Chebber or cheaper. He was like I forgot he was like maybe I think he's in Middle East or some kind to like that. I'm trying to think of like there are there are there. No one they got maybe never. Remember Mary Poppins.

26:45I know you do. But we're like so many good. Be people like and that was just like I'm so you're taking a dance 20 years ago could you imagine if they just I mean yeah they didn't slip into any DMs or truly the entire it must be this the entire break dancing industry must be like fuck that. If you are on that dock. You're not one of us. It really is interesting so. Obviously they get married and she you know starts to like they start to be like this thing where they're like yeah after coaching. She starts to adopt my style or am I adopting her style what's what they like ask her like are you adopted can such like I don't even know they might they make it a big fucking point to ask her that she's adopted his style when it's like is his style. Blah on mediocrity basic mediocrity.

27:47This documentary is going to really try and be like. They're creatives they think out of the box. Like their style is just like not power moves like you know how it's like almost like they want to be like. Okay what you guys think big ball and big people be growing be boy are that's mostly power moves but the real stuff isn't. The transitions and. The fun creativity throw in there you're just like. You can't do any of those moves that's why you think it's that way. How's your technique is bad like. If you can't do a back bend you can go back really well like you can't you know like make a very. Clean line that is sharp where your body and its movement articulate the ends of movements in a very strong hard hitting or interesting way you're not doing the dance.

28:57It's like so weird right like when you think in the micro granular moments of what makes a truly great dancer versus someone who can move well. What makes a truly gifted vocalist over someone who can sing or carry a tune. What is like all that person can sing if you're listening to karaoke and like they're getting everything right and you're like yeah. But you will tune it out easily it's still like. Monday and kind of like elevator music which is music it's you know it makes sense to the moments in time in which you hear. The line of a voice being sung and you're like what the fuck. Or when you watch a dancer do a piece of choreography maybe you've seen a different dancer do it or maybe you are just in the perfect place in time with someone who is so brilliantly gifted that their body is.

30:05In real time giving movement to music with breath in a way that connects you spiritually and it's like. Yeah it's it's because these people like become vessels and vehicles for like some sort of artistic greatness like I don't know how to say like when you know when you see someone it's like. It's a of course a perfect combination of someone being incredibly gifted prone to something you know maybe even like. Like blessed physically through their own genetics and technique practice and a certain amount of luck to just be able to sing that well. Or move their body and like hit certain things so. And then it's just a little bit more sharply that it takes your breath away.

31:09It's just we've all experienced that. And I think that we all kind of know if we've ever. We can do it ourselves or if you even touched moments of being able to do it I can't dance obviously I can't sing or dance. I'm not on this podcast but you know I'm saying where I'm like okay because I'm in character and I can do something whatever it's usually in character. But I know I'm not a good dancer and I know I'm not going to go out there and sing opera. Even if I think that I have a good voice and even if I think that I'm flexible and can like kick like. At a certain age if you're 30 and or more and wanting to do something that's artistic and call yourself a professional that you don't get paid for but you like want to be at a level that you're never going to get at because you never have been at it and no one around you is at it like what is real and what's not at this point in the dark it becomes like.

32:21Weird because we're like. I need the doc to tell us that like no actual dancers would film because they have this guy named Louis who is going to throw the ocean qualifying event we've met two other break girl dancers we've seen them break girl dance and they're better than Rachel but still not wildly great and Sammy who's her coach who he thinks he has his own style is so bad we're like so. Fucking confused okay so the Olympics are going to happen obviously we know in Paris the 2020 and breaking becomes an Olympic sport and so as we say we they have qualifiers now the way that it worked is that Oceana which is like. Australia New Zealand you know some of the like French Polynesian like a bunch of islands God bless i'm sorry I don't know what Oceana is I realize I was like oh that's interesting I would just if you said Oceana I'd be like little mermaid okay and that's because I'm a dem American that's on me it's. My fault it's not even America's fault Chris Ferris fault okay so at the qualifier qualifier that lovely older lady was like i'm 41 so she loses against Rachel like what the curly hair girl didn't want to do the Olympics she's like i'm a big girl at heart i'm not a big girl for the bucks we're like oh.

33:41Oh okay so Rachel is there and she says she flies through the first two rounds so already we're like what. I when we see racial dance and we know this from washing all these the Olympics it feels like there is nothing that the woman does that I feel like I can't do. And that's just not how it should be I should be wrecked with jealousy at the certain amount of like hopeless futileness watching someone do something at the Olympic level in that i'll never be able to do it. I can't be like oh what should I be a Olympic break dancer. Now. Let me get into this more but it's like it is it's it's it's just crazy it's just it's very it's very intense okay so as I said she flies through the first two rounds the last rounds against some frizzy hair girl Molly and.

34:53The other girl like does something she says I couldn't do and Reagan like never. Wait I'm so sorry my nose and it's weird. Okay the other girl I think is better okay the other girl has a lot more like groove and a lot more style now I don't know why Rachel wins okay it's like and it's like real back and forth like. One one and somehow Rachel like takes it up okay and they have they have they show us the judges there's like three guys and none of them look pleased at all I don't know what what they're doing there or if they have eyes. The minute Rachel wins some lady appears to do a drug test because now they're in business in the business is the Olympic business you better not do any drugs and I was like oh my god I wonder if they knew that if. If like I was I don't want to like put labels on be girls and be boys but I wonder if all the people that were be girls and be boys at all the qualifying events throughout the world knew that if they won immediately after they would be drug tested.

35:58Because I would think that be some lead in some of the systems. Okay Rachel also says this which I find to be so weirdly like entitled and the Lusional and Karen that I'm like this she's someone who I think is going to like have one of like a viral video happen again but this one will be like her drunk on a plane because she says that so no now she obviously qualifies for the Olympics and she's like I thought they're. They would have a training program for me like I thought they would have like a nutritionist provided and it's like you thought what. You thought the Olympics we're going to train you to be a break dancer that you should already be a break dancer that's the thing. They're supposing you already do that they're supposing you've already got that.

36:59They think you know how to break dance. They don't know that for some reason some guy and weird guy named Louis was ahead of this whole qualifying event and does not know up from down. Like I mean it was done so shotally I'm like is this real life. It feels like it's like some beauty pageant you know how there's like those all those like off brand beauty pageants always called something crazy. Mrs international hosting America pageant you're like what just words international beauty pageant America miss misses like you just like what you know. Pick them out of like a fish bowl like three of them and make a pageant you know like it does feel like that sometimes. It feel like those pageants have more organization than what the fuck Louis did for the for this qualifying event okay. So obviously now they have to do this thing and they this is where the documentary like becomes like a.

38:03Multi cam sitcom like cast a high jinks where it's like a weird montage you like of like of like what's the. Rocky like a rocky Balboa montage of like someone getting in shape like she's going to go on the plan the plan is like strength training she has to learn how to do power moves and even do a power move she has to be able to. Balance like core wise on her body but these are things that people that are professional dancers. I've been doing a lot of do they know how to do that they know how to do those hands to answer the ship but this pitch doesn't she's not she's been she doesn't she's not dancers she is she's a hobbyist I mean this is so crazy I mean this is so bananas it's so crazy that she was like. Put me in coach okay so and coach being the world okay so.

39:04She has to learn how to do these power moves because she knows it's high scoring things like we said there's a scanning Louis that oversees all of the Australian B community which i'm like I would kick him out i feel like she this exactly feels like someone who would. Like decide to book themselves in a 5k that and they've never ran before but they're doing that to force themselves into a like running training program says like well I wouldn't do it unless I had the deadline so now I know I have to run a 5k and you know two weeks you're like oh my god bitch you have. A lot to strain for you know it's like that kind of thing it's like she did that version and instead of the 5k it was the Olympics and she was like well I guess I have to become a be girl now and so I don't like that you know you have to be one literally have to be be already be already be a be girl. Alright so um.

40:07She then says. That she had never consistently been in the gym. And that one time someone told her that girls don't do power moves she said. And I want to be like wait. So is a be girl be boy culture of feminist culture or is it not I thought you got it's got that I thought your whole thing was you entered into the space being like girls dance with the boys dance like you literally said that and now you're saying that you don't do the hardest kind of best kind of be girl be boy moves not because you can't. And you don't know how to or you refuse to train because some person told you that little girls can't and you internalize that and believe that you know your whole fucking thing is being a feminist. That's why someone told you someone told you you can't until you were like okay. Which by the way makes no sense because even I know and can see that girls are always doing power moves there's always girls spin on their heads and shit are you talking.

41:14It's okay it's just hard. I you know truthfully don't watch as much like battling in a be girl be boy way as much as I probably watch like drag battling like you know like that girl dancer poly and stuff like that I like you know I don't have to say last name like I do watch a lot of that kind of dancing. But any kind of battle dancing and you know be girl or drag like ball ball room that kind of thing are always going to need the rousing excitement audience like visceral reaction that a power moves that's why a death drop happens all the time. And those in ball moves that's why you see them there. Jaw dropping you know. That's why it's exciting so she's like a nervous run by serious serious athletes.

42:17People were probably wondering while I was here and it's like yeah because they're serious athletes and they're like why is this person here. Where the Olympics. She goes to Taiwan to find people for power moves I just want to be like I wish one of them would just look at camera be like. She doesn't have it. She starts to like try break this down but they're going to go on different stops and they go to like a masters and she doesn't even make it you know she doesn't make it pass the preliminary and she's like sees her competition and we're supposed to assume that she's been seeing her competition but then we're. They start to be like it's like set in how hard it's going to be and it's like oh. You never saw what people were doing in other parts of the world you thought you and Louis were just you know. Making quick moves and that was it.

43:22So Flix which is the older lady who had been in the qualifier with the blonde hair said that she saw a post. And the post was of Rachel dancing and it was sloppy. And that it's going to become like oh no she won and it's going to be really bad for us at the Olympics and tiny locks is like yeah well yeah I was sloppy in that video but it's always sloppy it's Rachel. Tony locks comes her. It makes me happy because it's like it has to be done. So what has happened is they are like Louis becomes our head coach and Sammy is like the other coach and Louis like yep I'm the head coach and it's also like I train with her like three times we're like which do you know what head coach means I don't know why it is it feels like something. Like there's some there must be some rumm a reason why Louis made the head coach and nothing was asked of him and also Louis seems to have no responsibility for himself and her like he doesn't feel like he has.

44:32There's no reason why he should feel that he's in anything wrong. And that's another thing like I definitely wish the producers of this doc were like hey Louis. Do you think you have any capability and her not being ready for the Olympics since you said that you were. Her head coach and. You had already witnessed her dancing before so you knew her skill level. And then the thoughts. Would be a great question. Never asked. Okay. He's like I was so busy I do all the admin stuff so I'm just really spread then will memo him I'm Louis. They may stop to. They realize things are doing it well and so you're like they have like three weeks left and they're like we're like okay so is this where you.

45:32Decide to finally buckle down and quit is this where you decide to call in. The best be dancer of all time to give you you know like one trick at least one way to win this know what they decide to do is just go on a media blitz. And there is a clip show of them just going on media parents and media parents just talking about this and it's the maybe the only subtle time the documentary shows us I think in an unspoken way that these people are grifters. But they were just in it for a little bit of fame. And there's whatever they're like con was. She has to on these news programs say things like I'm going for a medal. When she knows she's. So then. Louis like yeah it was a losing battle.

46:34She starts to have mental health issues she says she goes on an antidepressants I'm like oh so you have a. Why like is it because she has anxiety and I guess my thing is at some point. I really have such things as imposter syndrome and I know the Olympics is a high level place but sometimes I also want to be like is anxiety and fear there to save us from making horrible decisions. If some should I call her delusional if she in fact has fear and anxiety over the decisions that she's making because she seems to be just bypassing them I am assuming an actual delusional person would never have them. Producers like hey why don't you guys just quit. And she said because she would have regretted it. It seems like they thought the Olympics were a once in a lifetime opportunity that doesn't happen to anyone that you should go along for the ride with.

47:44Like you would do if you got cast in a reality show or. Something like that it's just that. What it negates is the respect for the athletes who have trained for this thing their whole lives. You just feel like you fell into. You know it's like yeah you didn't win a spot on like the battle. Like you somehow finagled your way into the Olympics. And you don't deserve to be there and it's so shocking you want people to not be horrified that you didn't realize that.

48:45It's you know what it is it's what it's like a weird level of being rude it's like so in a pro her her her inability to like know her place and what is appropriate for her level of skill and what this event is is so off that it's just like anti socially rude. But she's going to frame it in many different ways and none of it is like take accountability for it. So her parents are having some health issues and like you know her mom had like three aneurysms she almost died we're like oh so sad for her mom or whatever but also they're like maybe we won't go and we're like oh my god. I mean you're saving yourself but you know God bless. Rachel's like my goal became just to get one vote. And it's interesting it's like why why do you want one vote is it because you want to think to yourself that someone thinks that your artistic work is better than obviously a more talented persons.

50:03That be for your ego if your whole thing is a love of this art form that you're going to study wouldn't you want the best work to win and at this point we all know it's not going to be yours so it's incredibly like it's an ego driven want for your work to be like accolated when it's obviously like far beneath where we are. And doesn't deserve it like not everyone deserves a participation trophy. And you are in a victim of that you are in a victim of not winning you are in a victim of being as good as everyone else in this one thing no it's like I guess that whole thing is that you can be whatever you want to be you can't be whatever you want to be you can be one of the best dancers in the world if you aren't one of the best dancers in the world. You know I and that's the truth like I can't be queen of America.

51:09I mean what to tell you you can't be like Chris if you really want to be queen of America you'll find a way what am I going to do trying to go with the entire government and then bring re and like enact a monarchy make myself a queen. I mean i'm not going to do that I have no guns i'm scared of confrontation much less any sort of like violence i mean you know what if you wanted enough Chris you write raise an army i mean you know like no she can't dance i can't be queen of America. I'd be a better queen of America than she be a dancer. But I can't get what I want. Anyway um she starts to frame her choices being bustly. She started to realize that she had no hope that she did not have the technique there that she after setting into I want and after all the straight strength training that you barely made any actually workouts and she can't balance herself.

52:11Enough to do again one exciting move so instead she's going to just do weird choreography and the weird choreography is going to have ties to Australia so she's going to. Jump around like a kangaroo and she's going to do some dolphin shit and she's like going to do a sprinkler and she's going to present a living breathing testimony to the history of Australia in. Dance form and then she's going to use that coupled with on the woman so don't you fucking fuck with me to be like that was the choice I made creativity and I was hounded for it. Hounded because I was a smart Australian scholar patriotic love kangaroos was trying to teach you stupid assholes about him. Her story about arriving in Paris honey and Sammy cannot be with her because you guys have such a fucking code of pen relationship and she's walking through the village and she doesn't already what thing is so she has a panic attack.

53:22Honey and then you know I was like yeah that's your body being like run away you just listen and then it was interesting she said that in the village they have like a meditation room with the BR headset that like makes people like visualize walking out. In front of all the people in the screaming and stuff like that I was like oh my god could you imagine playing that the our game. I want to be like I want to be an Olympian. I would be so excited if there was a VR game exactly like she described I'm going to pick figure skating obviously where it's like I get to walk I get to like glide on to a nice. And so it's like you feel that and then people are you know roaring excited and then somehow you can like do a routine and like learn how to like jump in ways that does it makes you doing a triple axle in the VR world and then you could do a whole goddamn routine and the very in the routine.

54:25People obviously a broisly cheer and like throw roses at you and if there was such a VR as me being able to virtually do some sort of Olympic ice skating routine I would probably die doing the VR because I'd be like in a constant loop I would never stop doing I'd be like. She died doing what she loved pretending to dance in her head. She starts to get excited that maybe she doesn't have an amazing experience but she's also excited because it's soon to be over. Sammy Sammy the entire time is like you can do a babe just be confident out there. Just be present whatever happens like Sammy never is like. I should have told her that she wasn't good enough. And saved us this I should have been like a voice of reason should I should have like tried to I should have I wasn't I like it's Sammy was like living vicariously through her or both of them they both just love to how famous she was and like going on local news radio stations.

55:42I go to like the place to look concord where they're having like the big battle everyone's like watching it's like one 30 a.m. when the battles happening in Australia but flicks and tiny locks are there. Louis gets to be on the floor while Sammy is like you know up there. It's like the 17 best be girls on the planet says the announcer were like. 16 maybe. Snoop is there I forgot snoop was like so all over these 2020 Olympics I'm always so confused by that what who did why like why why how does one get paid like how much money to get paid to some happy the face of the fucking Olympics it's just celebrity who is so crazy sometimes. So okay first battle is Reagan versus logistics Reagan versus Reagan Reagan Reagan Reagan versus logistics from America.

56:46None of the people that she battles are given the time of day we don't get to see them or talk with them they barely like show them obviously didn't get the rights it's obvious that they I would have been great to have any of them be like I didn't know what to expect but then when she started dancing I was shut I want to be like yeah what do you think. First round 18 oh she thought she would get a vote she doesn't. Sammy rushes down to be like I'm so sorry wifey for not being honest with you this is going to be hard and I didn't say you first success notice kidding he's like you're doing great keep going. This is crazy what's yeah this is talking about gray gardens talking about mommy dearest like what happens with these with couples like you're together that just like live in cookie cookie town together you're like ooh.

57:47She's like I don't think I'm doing fine why am I so slow she says. Yeah you are. 23 levels down from where these people are as dancers. That's you're just so off. It's just that you your way your body moves the way these people these are these these people are professional dancers you'll never move like them. I am just surprised that you have a way worth all to know that you are going slower than them because I honestly don't even know if you know like that you look different let's so when she starts saying things like that you're like oh okay I get it you do know. You do know that you are slower than them you do know that there is a difference. Now. Whether you just decided in real time to get over the cringe or whether you decided that if anyone tries to make fun of me about this I'm just going to play victim play like a feminist victim about it so to work out for me on a Netflix special I'm not quite sure what you told yourself but that is what's happening.

58:59Second battle France. It's a. She says it was a blur it's 18 out third round is the world champ she's 17. Now when the world champ and her are going against each other. Rachel does this thing where she like I guess has you have to act cocky you know when you do this kind of shit so she's like. Yawning like as if what the world champ is doing is boring her when it's like so the other way around when it's so crazy insulting like it is so like yeah I mean. Lully says he speechless watching it. Here's the thing though Rachel's like I got to ace up my sleeve yeah she's the seven year old child prodigy answer that can dance circles around me truly but.

1:00:08They have no idea what I got. So she starts a routine which we've seen in real time but the way the documentary shows it is that they show it like it's edited like the. Climatic scene of little Miss Sunshine. It's. There's lights it's supposed to be like she's in her creative land like she's dolly or Picasso on some other realm of consciousness and of joy creating from a different place that should be connecting us all from her sense of wild. And then freedom. That's the vibe that the montage wants us to think it is. Louis says he had a hideous face. Sammy said he was struck by the beauty of the performance.

1:01:14She starts to go viral obviously she sees the memes Rachel Dratch on Fallen which. Rachel Dratch. Please I wish they would just give. Like. A panel of female comedians a late night talk show like obviously Chelsea Lately Chelsea lately had one and obviously we have like the view but those aren't like comedians it's just like I wish there's so many funny females. I wish there was like a late night panel where it would be like Rachel Dratch or like I don't know Anna Gaskayer you know like anyone funny from any part of our lives I could just go and sit and talk about pop culture things for like a nighttime they'll talk about I mean I just make my dream come true. I think she'd be so funny like girls ability people Sherry O'Terry would be so funny on it I mean obviously. You can like it could be like Jenny's late I mean I mean like just pick people from SNL you could do so many people. Okay so basically.

1:02:19We get a little opinion from Snoop being like yeah when I watched it I had a laugh. And that's when Rachel's like the vitre all that came in honey it took a turn it was so hateful and it was just because I was a female if anyone else did it that had a penis people would be laughing what a fun guy with a little gesture going out there making fun. But because it was me and my boobies people were so mad and I'm mad about that because I'm a feminist like Chris Ferris Chris Ferris a feminist and she knows it it's a hard world out there it is a hard world out there and it's like hard when women are judged you know like and are incredibly gifted and talented and are in communities of people that will not give them shots or will not relate to what they're doing or don't get them in such a way because you know they only care about what they care about and they are you know usually not you know either bypock or female or queer in any kind of way right.

1:03:23Okay, but this is not that kind of situation. She's battling other females. Also. No one making fun of her like sexuality or like her body or like singing anything about her gender at all like they are purely making fun of your skill level like it's so wildly purely technique and skill based the criticisms lambasted against you which are very good because you have no you don't have those skills. She asked people like to stop harassment people start to also say that there was a good conspiracy that her. Stupid husband was like one of the judges or pay the judges that were in the qualifying round and then everyone's had to come and be like that's not true they were independent they're just shitty.

1:04:26And there's just a lot of big girls Louis said. Tings was like listen. The truth is at the qualifying ocean around she was just the best that day. And then we're like okay so you guys have no one no one's so yeah just like yeah in every way any of you have a if you are a big girl you swim away from Australia as fast as humanly possible that's what we're guessing. There being a lot of video diaries of Rachel cry and struggling which is indulgent it's hard listen I have become completely like callus to watching anyone hold a selfie vertical camera to their face and cry into it I can't actually do it. I can't do it I think it's indicative of the mental disorder. Like it's now one of the first signs I think like I if you do that if I see you do it if someone does it unless it's very particular I mean it's a very specific situation and even then.

1:05:34God bless you know what's that ladies and oh that nice lady whose mom got kidnapped Nancy my god and then honey you know I'm saying that. Even her crying videos weren't like her holding her camera like someone had the good grace to be holding it in front of her as she cried for her mom and I really obviously I'm so sad about that it's like we live in an influencer culture there culture though where people really just will hold up a fucking camera you guys. I can't believe my doing this I might delete this later but you know it's like whatever you're just deal with it the call best friend call therapist call someone your life go off get go off. Line. Anyway. She's doing what she's doing she says that she was cringe and brought shame and embarrassment on the country. How about the art form.

1:06:35Do you not get that you were like wildly entitled to the art form itself that you misrepresent of the art you cannot break dance that well. Which if this is like I like to like if you if you love ballet but you can't do a turn on point then you're not a ballerina and it's just that like you can't you it's maybe it's just harder to like have that boundary but you're not a big girl okay. I want to her parents are like yeah we kept our distance were like and I was like yeah I'm sure you fucking did I'm sure you've been keeping your distance. That's your way that's how you parent. Not from each other just from your children. Then she gets this is Rachel gets an email from Richard Branson. Who this is like her like come back where she tries to get us to be like look people like me and she should like me Richard Branson who's like this very famous rich English guy was like I was moved by your performance it was so original. And so when people were mad at you I wanted you to come directly to my party palace and some island where I could just like bow down to you he bow down to me me Rachel.

1:07:49Are you guys friends now you always hang out you guys spend Christmas together. So you know she reemerged in the scene after going through her period of exile and then this is probably the worst part of the documentary for me okay because I love this girl named Tony locks right she's like me Odessa girl right so Tony locks these her and she goes right up to her and she's like look. I was I was offended by your routine but mostly the sprinkler part. Because I know you said like all the parts were australian or whatever but the sprinkler bitch the sprinkler and Rachel's like oh the sprinklers quintessentially Australian. And Sammy's like she got the world talking and then they play see is unstoppable. I don't stop a ball. You're like oh my god I how dare you how dare you. So the media montage of people coming around and being like positive about like you know what we were meeting to meet that Rachel she has such a bad dancer.

1:08:54And then. Teeny locks is like yeah so I go home because I'm like quintessential sprinklers and the picture is right. For some reason the sprinkler dance move. Was invented like an australian discos in the 1970s. And the doc ends with Rachel being like so I left academia. Now what. Fame. Obviously. It's funny because they just announced the new season of dancing with the stars. And like Jedda Dewan Tatum is on it which is like big news A because she's literally a dancer like literally a dancer I mean literally a dancer she was in step up. And you know it's a lot of pop culture knowledge people would know that like Justin hooked up with her anyway God bless. All that to say it does feel like Rachel.

1:09:56Time this documentary hoping that people from dancing with the stars would get a buzz that was going to come out and hopefully be like a contestant on it. And then I think it's because they're really big I left academia so I made sure my schedule's free for whatever's going to come my way well. The answer to the stars. But she doesn't have like at all an engaging personality she's not funny her husband's weird she's not talented you know I'm saying like like. She's not going to be someone like I think people are going to want to keep up with. But I watched this documentary and talked about it for an hour and seven minutes so whose fault is that.
