1000多年以前，任朝廷监察御史的唐代诗人元稹被贬至通州(今达州)任司马。一日元稹到一酒店小酌，下酒菜中的牛肉片薄味香，入口无渣，他颇为叹赏，当即名之曰“灯影牛肉”。用“灯影”来称这种牛肉，足见其肉片之薄，薄到在灯光下可透出物象。
