2:03Coach Malone's press conference has had me riled up all day. Joshua Marlow. It's great to be together. I don't even know if I've introduced myself yet. I'm just going to tell fired up and go and I am. I'm Isaac Shade, I'm your host. It's great to be here together. We're joined by Fiddy, Josh Marlow, the great host of the Four Corners podcast, part of Heel Tough Log, him and Anthony Pagnata. This has been a crazy bonkers day of UNC athletics information between the press conference and between the unveiling of the official staff, which has one more coach than the NCAA actually allows. Maybe we'll talk about that. Michael Lone. Hardy has resigned. We're not even going to touch that on this show. I think I'm going to do something with that tomorrow on Friday. So be on the lookout for that. But Marlow, I want to get to the beats of the press conference and talk about what we thought were the most important things, whether it was the Cameron Fenn's eligibility update,

3:06to say on Kaita News, any of that kind of stuff, or just kind of his progression and all that, the accountability. But my goodness, dude, Marlow, this felt to me completely different than anything we've heard for the last half decade from a Carolina basketball press conference. I need to know from you, what was your single biggest takeaway from watching and listening to Michael Malone on Thursday? Well, first off, Shay, appreciate you reaching out, bringing me back on. It's not lost on me that you had a Pags on last week. And this week you had to get a dose of me back. So it does feel good to be back on here talking Carolina basketball with you. I'll tell you the first thing that I thought, and I sat through the entire 27-minute presser, cut it up, played a bunch of sound, reacted to it myself, the thing that I kept coming back to was very simple.

4:07It sounded like Carolina basketball. And since Michael Malone got hired, and I drove up the Chapel Hill the day of his introductory press conference, I was there for that 30-minute thing. And then drove two and a half hours back home. But ever since that moment, Carolina basketball has conducted itself like Carolina basketball. And what I mean by that is, if you want to draw comparisons, and that's what we do in the podcasting world, we do the comparison thing, I thought when Huber Davis got hired and introduced, I thought Huber Davis won a press conference. I don't know how many times after that he won off the court. Michael Malone hasn't spoken a lot since he got hired. This was his first formal presser. He's joined John Rossstein, did an informal press conference after the Greensboro news.

5:11He was all in the field of 68 as well today. Every time that he's talked, he's shared he's won. Because whatever message he's trying to get across in that moment, he's communicating it in the right way, in the right manner that makes you believe this isn't just a head coach that's talking the talk. This is a head coach that's walking the walk. He's still got to prove himself. He's very clear. He's still yet to coach a game. And he'll ultimately be to be judged by what the team does on the court. But Carolina is carrying itself off the court the way you expect. I think we all believe here. This is the premier program in college basketball. It's one of the pre-imminent jobs in the basketball community, the way that you expect a program like Carolina to run. Look at all. Look at the changes in recruiting and how many high level players they were involved with and the that upcoming class and future classes. You look at the portal. They did a really good job. All things considered, putting together a roster that has I think second weekend potential

6:15right away. Look at the coaching staff. It's expanded. He's got more resources than Huber Davis had for whatever reason. And they're operating the way you expect a program in this caliber to operate and you got a head coach that's on a mission to maybe give the middle finger to the NBA after he got fired by the Denver Nuggets, but also to prove to this fan base that he's going to give them a program and a team that we can be proud of on a consistent basis. I like how you said it felt like Carolina basketball with the way Coach Malone was talking today. And, you know, I've thought about it and it's like, I don't know that I've heard a Carolina press conference feel or sound like that have the fourth rightness that it had or any of that since Coach Williams. Yeah. You know, Coach Williams, ah, shucks and all that, but man is a straight shooter. He's going to tell you the truth. He's going to tell you, you know, what it is and how it is.

7:17And I thought that's what Coach Malone was doing. He sounds like an NBA coach who had less than zero interest in performing the traditional college coach press conference platitudes and just here's this and here's that. The lack of coach speak was glorious. He gave evaluations. He identified weaknesses. He wasn't bashing his players, but he was telling us where they need to grow and how they can grow. He set challenges for players publicly. I thought Michael co-asked him a great question about that and an accountability moment with the player back when he was Nuggets coach. He was joking with reporters, right? The moment with with Brendan Marx asking him about where he graduated from or somebody had asked him about where he was living, not because he wanted to know his address, but just like coach Malone had said he didn't have a house let yet. And I think the guy was just trying to say, so where are you living? You know, like what type of a comment? Like he was joking around. You know, I don't.

8:19Different language than we've heard from coach Davidson, depending on how you felt good or bad. Um, again, talking specifically about accountability and how important that is. And when asked about his roster, it wasn't just this dude could be the best dude that's ever come through Carolina basketball. I feel like we got a lot of that the last half decade. He actually tells you how he plans to use these players where they can grow where they can't. And on the note of accountability, Marlow, and then I'll pass it back to you. I felt like there are some things that have gotten by in the past half decade where we're not everyone was being held accountable at the level they needed to 100%. I thought when he talked about the style he wants his team to play. And he talked about how 90% of what they've worked on so far has been defense because he once he said, he said, quote, I don't want to be a team that wants to run and has to

9:20take the ball out of the net every single time. You can still play up tempo. It's a whole heck of a lot easier to do it when you're rebounding and running as opposed to having to take the ball out of the net. But he said that he wants to have a team that when 21,000 people born in that stadium, they can appreciate the way that they play and the effort that they play with. I can tell you firsthand, there's been a lot of games I've recast where my message has been positive because the scoreboard suggested I should be positive because Carolina won the game. But as someone that I like to think I know basketball, I appreciate seeing good basketball, wasn't happy with the way that Carolina played because there were like how many times when I would, like under under shebert Davis, how many games did they win that if Roy Williams

10:23was the head coach, he probably would have went there and said, we won because we're gifted were more talented than they are. And with hebert, he was never going to say this for whenever reason was never going to diminish what his team accomplished, didn't want to be upset with how they played if they won. And there's something to be said about celebrating winning. I don't want to not celebrate it. I feel like with Malone, Carolina goes there and they beat some school 70 to 63, but it should be 90 to 63. He'll tell you that. And I can appreciate that. And as Carolina fans, you should appreciate that. The level of blotness is it comes across disrespectful, but that's just at his nature who he is. I compare him to this generations Frank McGuire because he's an Irishman from New York, the son of a coach that wants to instill a level of toughness that quite frankly, we need

11:24around here. Quite frankly, we've been lacking. And this could all fall flat on its face. It could. And you could have me on in November and December and I can be raised in all kinds of came. We didn't make the right hire. I'm telling you right now, I don't get those types of vibes. There is a level of confidence. This man evokes behind the microphone. One because he's done it. He's won an NBA championship, but he's motivated because he got fired. He's been humbled. And I like hearing that. I like him talking about that experience of, and I got fired. And I had to look myself in the mirror and try to become a better coach and so on and so forth. I was really honest, really insightful. And I could listen to that man tell me a bedtime story to go before I go to bed every night because for a guy that worked in the media for all of about six months, he knows how to talk and communicate a message.

12:24He sure does. Oh boy, does he. And I want to follow up a little bit on what Marla said when we get back to the other side of this thing, but there's a big difference between bluntness and be raiding your student athletes. We'll look at that. We'll look at how he's fitting in as a tar he'll and I want to get some specific takeaways from Marla about some of the things we learned about players and what we heard. Get started today. Joshua Marlow, you said something just a minute ago that stuck out to me. You said one of the things about Michael Malone that that stood out to you was his bluntness. And I don't want in this generation where I get I get a little hurt and I get a little sad and I get a little disappointed when somebody speaks truth to me. I want to recognize Marlow. There was a huge difference between bluntness and me forcing you to grow and get better because

14:29I care about you and like a Bobby Knight berating tirade kind of thing where you're made to feel infantile. And I don't want people to get confused in the point we're making there that Michael Malone's bluntness is about making his players better based in the formation of relationship. I as a kid, as a youth probably more believed in the Bobby Knight style because it led to championships, led to wins so on and so forth. You grow up, you mature, you realize that's probably not the best way to to go about it. I would never want to coach a player that would not want to be coached hard. That would not want to be pushed. That would not want to be motivated to be the best version of himself. He can be as a player. The best version of himself. He can become as a person. I think that's what Michael Malone was trying to get across was if I coach you that way,

15:32it's because I believe there's more in you. Yes. And if I don't coach you that way, that's a reflection of what I think of you as a player, as a person, so on and so forth. And it's tricky shade in 2026 because there are a lot of distractions. These players have agents. They've got some of them have media circles that you've got to navigate. You've got to jump through. We're quite literally paying them a lot of money as we learn gesture that 20 million dollar report to come here and play basketball and play basketball at a high level. But with that, there should become a level that there should come a level of accountability with that. And if you don't do X, Y and Z, then by God, as your head coach, I've got the right to get on you about it. And I don't think he's going to be afraid to do that. Like, Shane, if we come out of a game or we come out to start a game and it's 10 to and we've taken four bad shots, committed two turnovers and we're not getting back on

16:37defense, this dude's going to call a timeout. He's going to put in the five quote unquote worst players on the roster and put their butts on the floor. And I can tell you, I have missed that. Yes. As someone that grew up watching that, as someone that grew up appreciating that, I've watched this program for five years play bad enough or that should have happened and it, Shane, it never happened. No, no, that's that accountability we were talking about earlier, you know what I'm saying? And like, here's the thing that I've really come to appreciate. Like, I'm not naturally somebody that is confrontational or steps into conflict, but it's become a discipline of mine. And a lot of that is because of my wife and she'll often say the phrase in the vein of like, shade, I love you too much to leave you that way or I love you too much to not tell you truth. And that's what we're talking about with coach Malone. That's a pack stalks to me. Yeah. You guys are an old married couple and I'm here for it.

17:41And so like, I just, I think we're going to get that accountability back. I don't know if we'll see a Roy Williams era five for five hockey change, but it wouldn't shock me in any way. And I do not think, again, I don't think we ever saw that over the course of the past five years. Now, Marlow, here's an interesting question. I want to kind of shift things a little bit here as we start to think about coach Malone unpacking some very specific things about players. What he's good in them, where they can grow, which again, I love. We had a great question here from Melinda Dolphin. We'll get to more questions in the next segment, but I thought it helped set up where we go next in this conversation. She said, so Isaac, which player did coach Malone's interview most change your opinion about and how so or why? So Marlow, as you think about all the various players coach Malone talked about, whether it was friends continuing to work out with the team, whether it's, um, Kada coming along with whatever it is. Is there a specific player that the interview changed your mind about? For me, it would say on Kada, because he gave you a minute and a half of the things he

18:46does really well told you why he is labeled as a rim runner, very refreshing to hear a basketball coach, talk basketball. You know, it was, it was cool to hear that talked about how he's really good in the pocket. What he can do as a, as a passer, and we, we know that Michael Malone wants this ball to move. He's going to, if Kara one is playing well and they're playing to their strength, that ball is going to go inside out. It's going to reverse sides of the floor. Um, and it's going to be generated through all five guys, not just guard dependent, but then he talked about how he, how he can grow and how he can improve trade. He's got all the potential in the world. Yes. To be a, I mean, he's projected as a lottery pick next year and he didn't show up until log is. I said today that had he shown up in mid May, committed in late April. Let's just say, but he was in Chapel Hill, ready to go by mid May, putting him in a position

19:49to be a part of everything they did during the summer. I would probably have all ACC expectations for him. Well, because he would have had two months of really working on his body, working on his frame because she had, he, I need him to add 10 to 15 pounds. Like I'm alone said, and as he gets stronger, he'll improve in these other areas of his game as well. This is, it's, it's a team game. Yep. And, and it's going to take this entire roster for Carolina to put together a really good for season. I do think a lot of the ceiling of this group depends on the development and the growth of say on K that because he's their most skilled big man. And that's why I don't like not having fence, right, ready to go right now. I would feel a whole lot better if I got it. I was 14 and eight last year was ready to play basketball. I don't know how people on your podcast have been. I pretty much got told if we don't have him no problem, I completely disagree with that. I think we need that dude, at least in the short run. Maybe not for the long run.

20:51I do think the long term outlook for 2026, 2027 depends on say on K as growth and development in season. And I think Michael Malone understands he's going to be a different player in February and March. Then he's going to be in November and December. And I'm excited to watch that growth and development as the season moves along. Yeah. Dude, that's a good word. And the thing that struck me that he said, by the way, we finally got a pronunciation guide today about him. And it's sigh on Kata. So we're ready for that now. Hopefully, don't make me sigh on the podcast too much. That's what you did there. That's great. But the thing that stood out to me that Coach Malone said about sigh on was that he was a more skilled player than he had given him credit for. And that's encouraging because he already believed in him at a big level. Marlow, the player for me that stood out to answer Melinda's question is what coach said about Neo-Avdollis? Yeah.

21:51And it was very similar in a way to what we experienced last year with Luca, where it was like came to America late, kind of got going late, figured out some things here and there. But with all due respect to Luca, there is such a higher ceiling for Neo. And I think the floor is higher as well because of his height, because of his passing capability, because of his shot creation capability, because he could run the point and have Matt Abel and Terrence Brown on the wings beside him with some rim runners in the pit. And hearing him talk about Neo's desire to grow and get better and immediately coming to Chapel Hill at the beginning of the summer and the way he's grinded all summer long, I was like, we might not be talking enough about Neo-Avdollis right now. No, I thought that was a really good point as well. And we've learned we've got some more source detailed reporting from inside Carolina,

22:52the past couple days. When Malone got hired and Malone saw it or started to build the roster, it all focused around Neo-Avdollis. I'm really excited about Terrence Brown, because my God, there's a lot of athleticism that we can unlock if we can play in the open floor a whole lot more. And I do think him being surrounded by better players and what you toss to offer to elevate the efficiency of his game. And Abel is going to develop, I believe, into an NBA first round draft pick, but Neo-Avdollis is a unicorn man. And I do think that if, and I saw him in person, I was in that Virginia Tech game a year ago, and you could see that there was more than what he was putting on the court at that time, if Carolina unlocks that in a minute, major way. It can be scary how individually good he can be, but that's the difference, man, is how many times under Huber Davis would he outline in detail?

23:55This is what a player does really, really well, but this is where they can grow, develop, and expand their game. He would never not talk about a player in a positive way, but there's something to be said of Michael Malone saying, hey, you're really good at this area. But if you want to get where you want to get to, which is the NBA I would imagine, you need to be good if not great in these other areas. And let's work together to accomplish that. And I think from what we can kind of see, the social media content, the summer has been much improved. It's been a lot more fun. This looks like a group that's bought into the message that he's preaching. I think so. And I think this is a group that's motivated to help him restore this program where we want and expect this program to be, which is competing for ACC championships and competing for high seed come selection Sunday. So I think those two guys, they're probably in season development determines Carolina

24:57ceiling. And there's a confidence level that I have that the guys that I see in November and December will be playing on a much more higher, much more efficient level, a level February, March, maybe even able. There's a lot more to say here, including the way coach Malone is working his way into being a tar he'll not just a tar he'll volleyball dad, but a tar he'll through and through. I want to get Marlow's thoughts on what coach Malone said about that coming up in just a second. 26:59And I forget the exact question, but basically was asked about how he's getting settled and all of that. And what I loved was this. He talked about being, yes, I'm a Carolina volleyball dad. Like dude, by the way, when they're putting out highlights, Bridget is slaying things. I don't know if you follow UNC volleyball. It's crazy. She's so good, man. Of course. But what I love is he was talking about like at the NBA, it's just me. But now I'm one of 27 varsity head coaches. And so I get to go see Scott Forbes in Omaha. I get to see Jenny Levy before they go to the final four. Like this dude feels like he's all in. He wants to be part of this community. And so I want you to respond to that. And then I got another part of that I want to ask about as well. Shane, if you didn't know that Michael Malone wasn't a Carolina family member, would you think that he wasn't? No, I brought this up to to Pags and he didn't get the same feeling.

28:02Really? Why? I don't, he didn't really give me a great answer. He was a lot of people. That's all good to you. Trying to get great answers. Because I do think I asked great questions. From the moment that he has shown up, it doesn't feel different. It doesn't, like I know we didn't go to school there. I know that he didn't play for Dean Smith. I know we didn't play for Roy Williams. And that my core, that's, you know, when you, when you get to the core of my heart, I want a Carolina man running Carolina basketball. Like it. And in my wildest dreams after the Malone 10 year is done, it's where he's retiring and West Miller, Marcus Paige, we're putting a Carolina guy right back in there. But he has, he has thrown himself into the, the campus lifestyle in a way quite frankly that I know Bill Belichick has shown up at events.

29:03We know he's a big lacrosse dude. So he shows up at baseball games. He has used a basketball game or two for a big recruiting weekend. It doesn't feel real. It doesn't feel authentic. I agree. I don't know if Michael Malone wants to finish his coaching career at North Carolina. It's the biggest question I have as someone that is bought in. But I, you know what? I think he's open-minded to it. I think he's because I think he understands what comes with the job. He, even with Bill Belichick, he is one A, one B, the most visible person attached to that university. 100%. In a way that you don't get that in the NBA level, especially coaching in Denver, which is a small market. Right. You may have had the best player, but how many times were we talking about Michael Malone with talking about the NBA? He's in a position now, shade, where when you talk about North Carolina basketball, you're

30:08going to talk about Michael Malone's Tar Heels. That'll be the first thing you'd say. It's Michael Malone's Tar Heels. And I think that probably resonates with him. And so it was cool seeing him follow the baseball team during their run to the World Series. He's mentioned being a volleyball dad. I'd imagine they'll be at the football home opener and be at other events around campus. He just, he's done everything. We've asked a non-Carolina guy to do to prove you want to be a part of this. And I do think he is starting to become a part of the fabric of what North Carolina basketball is in 2026, 2027. And I said there was a second part I wanted to ask. I'll just go ahead and lay it out because you kind of led into it is that not only does he recognize that he's that 1A and 1B face, but he's embracing it. Yeah. Would not hear Bill Bella chick do that. I don't believe we ever heard Coach Davis do that, but he literally said on this press conference today. Sure, I could go incognito basically in the disguise to Bridget's volleyball games,

31:13which by the way, she's a sophomore. So hopefully we get at least three years of Coach Malone. And he said, but I recognize, and this was the subtext. He didn't say it. I recognize the position I'm in. And that means there's probably going to be a line of people lining up down the volleyball aisle to come take a picture with me. And basically he said, come on, let's do it. I'm here for it. You know who else does that at every freaking basketball game in the Dini Smith Center, a man named Roy Williams. He gets it and he's embracing it. And dude, this man is becoming Carolina basketball. I could not agree with you more. And I think part of it shade is and Melinda Dolphin, I think, wrote it in on your comments. He's talking. I thought we were talking. So he references the history and the tradition and understands he's a part of something that's bigger than himself.

32:13And I think selfishly, he wants his name to be a part to be attached to whenever we're rambling off the UNC Great Coaches. It's Frank McGuire, it's Dean Smith, it's Bill Guthriege, it is Roy Williams. River Davis would always say Matt Dordey. I don't think Matt Dordey, if you want to put him in there, great Matt Dordey is a great guy, not a great coach. River Davis gave us great moments. Moments that whenever I have kids, I'll tell my kids about what it was like. But I think Mike Malone wants to be in that Roy Williams at Dean Smith, Eschelon Ware. One a lot of games, competed for championships and did the type of job that we can all be proud of on a consistent basis. And I cannot be more fired up for what the future holds because I was all in on the Hubert Davis era. I saw the, I don't want to, I don't want to to my own horn.

33:16I don't want to relitigate the fact that I fired him at 15 and five in his first year. I saw, I saw the shortcomings. I saw the, I saw the things that would eventually hurt him in the long run. And maybe if the same thing's happened with Malone, I'll have to say the same things. I don't get that kind of vibe from Michael Malone. You know, it's, it's just different man. And I can't, I can't really explain it in a, in a great way. It's just you have to sit in these pressers to kind of feel it. I've, I sat in a few of the pressers after big wins. I was at the press conference after some losses. And it's just say there, there will be a different vibe that I get when we have big wins under Michael Malone and there'll be a different vibe I get after some disappointing losses under Michael Malone because they are going to happen. So this is me during a Hubert Davis press conference.

34:18Like I did seriously, I'm just sitting there pretending to sleep by your talk because it's like it was predictable. For baiting what he was going to say because it was, it was rehearsed. It was, that's literally, yes, I'm so glad you said it. Literally the word on the tip of my tongue. And I just, there's nothing to tell me. Like I wrote on our, on our background here on the side of anybody's watch. And like, will we get this version of Michael Malone always? Yes. I fully expect it. I love that you said yet. Like I think we're going to get to a post game press conference and going to be salivating because it's like, how is Coach Malone about to break this down? And what kind of nuggets? Hellariously. What kind of nuggets are we about to get here? And good, I'm glad you feel the same way. Like I don't think this is a one off. And as you said, he's continued to show that throughout every time we've heard him speak in now two formal settings as well as the informal settings as well.
