UK Labour Bans Trail Hunting: Animal Welfare vs. Heritage

Animal Welfare Minister Sue Heyman says the practice too often risks harming wild animals, making it unacceptable. The consultation opened this week and aims to shape how the ban takes effect. Trail hunting emerged after the 2005 Fox hunting ban, using hounds to follow pre-laid scents instead. But police and activists argue it's mainly a cover for chasing and killing foxes illegally. Earlier this year, a prominent hunter even admitted in court it acts as a smoke screen. Activists with a league against cruel sports tracked hunt meets from August last year through late March. They reported 488 cases of foxes being pursued and 1,220 instances of disruptive behaviour in rural areas. Several trails appeared in just 4% of monitored events.
