U.S. Missile Defense System Costs Surge to $185B

0:00On March 18th, the U.S. Golden Dome Missile Defense System now carries a projected price tag of $185 billion, up 10 billion from earlier estimates. This boost aims to speed up development of crucial space-based tools to detect, track, and counter missile threats. The program builds on existing ground defenses like interceptors and sensors while adding orbital capabilities for a more complete shield. Key efforts getting the extra funds include the Advanced Missile Tracking Initiative, a space-dated network, and the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking, Space Sensor. These focus on persistent monitoring of fast-moving hypersonic and ballistic missiles from space. Space Force General Michael Getlin says this covers the full system design over the next decade. Critics have floated costs over $1 trillion, but Getlin argues those figures mix in pricier overseas systems not needed for homeland. Russia issued a warning back in February with their Deputy Foreign Minister saying they'd explore countermeasures if the U.S. moves ahead, calling it, a new reality.

Space-based interceptors pose the biggest risks due to scaling and expense challenges.
