The big news is that the U.S. Coast Guard plans to turn the 200-acre site into a major training facility. This comes right after the announcement and Tuberville called the past few days a real whirlwind. The campus has been sitting empty for nearly two years, with just basic upkeep on the dorms and buildings. Tuberville say the structures are in solid shape, which made it stand out during the search. Tuberville pointed out it's a smart move financially, costing about a third of what building new would run instead of billions. Some pushback came from at least one Texas senator who questioned how the site was picked. Tuberville defended the process, saying the Department of Homeland Security scouted options for a full year across multiple states. They checked out other facilities before landing here, and it wasn't a rushed call. Homeland Security oversees the Coast Guard, so they're trusting the experts on this one.
