Welcome to Five on the Floor, a daily insider show on the Miami Heat and the NBA featuring Ethan Skolneck, Greg Sylvander, Alex Toledo, Brady Hawk, and others from the five reason sports network. Also make sure to subscribe to Off the Floor for the most heat anywhere. And we're off to a tremendous start live. We are five on the floor. We come to you directly after the Charlotte Hornets Miami Heat Thriller. It was probably my favorite game of the season. We're going to get into it. Ethan will be back shortly.

There he is now. Before we start though, I'm shouting out off the floor. That's our Discord server. You all know the drill. This is where you can consolidate all of your Miami Heat social media activity to one place. 299 a month. Check it out. Link is in the description. And if Ethan is back, I'll hand the mic over. But if he's not, it's all good too, because prize picks is our daily fantasy sponsor. I ended up losing my slip, because Khan went more than 27 and a half points rebounds in a siss. But that's okay. I had fun. Use the code five. You'll get $50 instantly when you play your first $5 prize picks. It is daily fantasy simplified. Check it out. Use that code five. All right. Is anybody hearing me? I guess that would be the question. Yeah. We hear you. Okay. Good. All right. I'm going to just start here. I think that's the best one of the season. I think that's the best one of the season. I know they beat in teams with better records. Obviously Houston, Detroit, Oklahoma City.

But that was that team was playing better. Anybody else is playing in the NBA. And I thought they played their game tonight. And you go into a game without Powell. We know obviously you've got hero to make it up. But without Wiggins, who I thought was going to be critical against a team like this, you get a start from Myron Gardner. You get closing minutes from Drew Smith. And you get the best offensive game that I've ever seen Tyler hero play. I'll just start there. Okay. We're going to get to Tyler and the player of the game tonight. But I know people are going to talk about, we're as a rookie in the bubble against, you know, and the game he had against Boston. And the game he had in the playoffs against Boston when they got beat 4-1 and that there's been some other games obviously where Tyler has been efficient in dynamic. No turnovers tonight. Yeah. Couldn't miss a three. Was setting guys up. I don't he didn't end up with a triple double, right? But he was I think at one point nine and nine, nine and nine tonight. I'll go to you on the first Brady on this. I haven't seen him play better. Yeah. It's not crazy to say.

I think this is one of the best overall games we've seen him play in terms of the stakes of coming back off an injury. He's been working his way in. It's been against staking teams. He's been finding his flow with the floater inside the lane because, frankly, that's just what you can do against teams like Brooklyn, you're able to just go and easily get a bucket. It wasn't so easy tonight. Like he was working for every single shot he had to go and get. It's been the big storyline for Miami is been, can't you find his three ball? Can Spowe, Spowe's talked about it here, Spowe's talked about it, kind of that being the last element. And what Spowe was saying is that this opens up the entire offense and I think you kind of saw that. And what Spowe was talking about in hinting at was what we saw tonight where he goes eight of 10 from three. Most of it to start the game was off the catch where he was just catching and pulling him out of where he was. He wasn't looking down. He wasn't deferring. He was like, OK, if I'm to step five and three point line, I'm still going to fire. But then it got to a point where he hits three or four of them. And now it's teams are going to fly out of him and even harder than they usually do. And now it's all movement and motion threes. And I think that was kind of the probably more impressive part where he's flying off these

pin downs and screens and inbound plays and he's able to hit these really tough like quick trigger threes and they were just huge moments in the game. That aside, the reason why I call it his best overall game is number one, the matchup was not easy. Number two in the clutch, they're throwing hectic doubles at him. Like they are swarming him. They're daring him to make the right play where they're splitting, you know, two guys on the weak side and saying, OK, either you're going to hit the overhead pass of the corner, you're going to swing it back up top or you're going to lob it over down low. You have to make this decision to make the right call. He made the right call every time. Like even the play where Drew had an open three that he missed late in the game, but it was a great kick out, like great play, great read. He was doing in time after time. And then there was the one where I think it was Knipple hit the three in the corner. They go back the other way. It's a three point game where you miss that shot. They go the other direction that game may look totally different. And he just think totally walks him down one on one gets to his mid range, slow fallaway and knocks it down. I thought that was my farthest toughest shot of the night. So decision making, shooting, being under control, you hinted at the one number that's

prime. I didn't mention enough, but zero turnovers with the attention that he's seeing. I think is important. Yeah, this was overall one of his better games in a game. But that was literally like a one point game, the entire game it felt like. It felt like there was no break away, either way. He was a plus 19. That is incredible. That is an incredible number to see. He just was playing winning basketball tonight. Greg, I know people have been hard on Tyler for a variety of reasons. I'm going to give him a lot of credit for this. The injuries, his availability is always going to be problematic, right? But when he is hurt and he comes back, he typically doesn't really miss a beat. And actually, if you look at the overall efficiency he's played with, with the exception of the three, the three has been the thing and Brady has talked on that too. He's told us you talked about that, that the three ball hadn't really come back until well tonight. And it came back in a way. But I have to give him credit for this. He skill develops.

He doesn't take a pause. He works his game. We know his limitations. We know what he's never going to be, right? I'm defensively tonight. They were picking on him. We did a pregame show and of course, Eternal Harped on this quite a bit. Who was Tyler Gregorgan? And the answer was pretty much nobody, right? In that lineup, there's nobody for him to guard consistently, but they made it work. They made it work and he was elite offensively tonight. And the other thing I want to mention is that I think we should acknowledge that the Hornets have definitely created a, and I'm going to be cliche here, a buzz around the league. And part of this was, I think Tyler got up for that con matchup, even though it wasn't a direct one-on-one matchup. People are wanting to humble the rook and the rookie is really good. And for me, it was apparent that there was a little bit of dueling going back and forth with a couple of different guys. And to me, that was just a super fun way for that game to unfold.

And Tyler's floor game, best I've seen. I want to get to a couple of other things that happened in this game. And player of the game will cycle back to Tyler, obviously, because I don't think there's any questions tonight. Jaime Hackez was terrific again. He couldn't guard him. Couldn't guard him. And look, it's one thing against the bad teams, okay? And Brady, you identified that against Brooklyn. He was going to eat. That's just the way it is. He starts to get downhill. Teams can't do anything with him. The four threes tonight, though, was it four threes? And he has shortened the three point four. I still don't want him taking them. I still don't take it under any circumstances. He made four tonight. But him and hero playing in tandem has been something that we've been concerned about a little bit. Because Jaime got a rhythm with the ball on his hands a lot. Then Tyler came back, came off the bench. It does seem like, as long as it's two of the three of them, hero Hackez and Powell, they're okay.

But when it's all three of them, it's problematic. Is that fair? Yeah, that's fair. I don't know if I would loop Jaime even into that category, because I feel like he's kind of in his own wing category, like I think Tyler and Norm are probably more inside that bunch of not trying to play together because of defensive purposes. Jaime's size allows him to kind of do different things defensively at least. But I will say he's shot nine threes in the last three games that he's made six of them. I'm not saying this is a turnaround because I still, I know you've kind of hinted at maybe some of the things changing. I still think generally a shot looks pretty much the same, because it's kind of all over the place, like the balance and everything, like some of those threes tonight, like he's shooting like followways, like he's like fading away as he catches. He was just knocking him down and then sometimes it's just feeling good. Yeah, it's a confidence day. That's really where it comes down to you most of the time. It's just if you're confident and you find a, you know, a rhythm there, like keep shooting it. But it wasn't just the threes. I mean, it was everything else. It was him. Like, we're talking about Tyler because he's the story of this game. We'll get back to him.

I may kept them alive. A great pocket to that third quarter. And the first half specifically as well, like he kind of kept them alive, getting downhill, body and guys. Once again, like I, Brooklyn, you head into a game, you're like, okay, he could search out these matchups and he can get down hill and get out and transition off turnovers. Tonight, there was like, it's not an easy matchup. I mean, there was some big on them that were guarding them because the obviously teams continue to do that. Some of their wings that are bigger, he can't really bully them. But he was doing it a lot like where he has that slow step where he gets to the lane. He's so good off glass. Like he has some touch off glass. Like you don't see many guys in the league nowadays, like spamming the backboard once you kind of go off your drives. And he does. Like he just has really good touch down there. So I thought he was probably one of the unsung heroes of this game. I mean, 23.9 to 14 shooting. And even some of the stuff where he's making some of these passes, I still think his playmaking is probably his biggest jump that we're seeing in make as teams kind of throw hedges at him and they kind of make that throw different things at him along the way.

He's just been strong. Like he's been good. And it's, I still feel like there's certain matchups though. I feel like the hornets are kind of in this bucket where teams that are uptempo and play fast offensively kind of allow him to do this. So even though Charlotte is a good team, like they're a fun good off. It's a team that can score a bunches. They also are a little chaotic. And I mean, I think just plays well off chaos. And that's kind of what we saw tonight. But it's control chaos as well. And another comment comes in here and I want to make sure we touch on all the guys who contributed to this because we don't talk about him a lot. But I thought there was a big number tonight. The avian Mitchell took nine shots. It doesn't seem like a lot. But when he's not shooting and they don't have to guard him, it gums things up and it's gum things up late in games. Not tonight. He closed with Drew. Greg. And Drew had a couple of big plays down the stretch of the game, which is why we trust him. But I just want to go through this and then we will pivot back to talking about Tyler and I want to get into a little bit of a band. But some of these numbers are significant tonight because it does show that he's starting

to maximize certain players. Davian shooting nine times. I think that helps the offense flow a lot. He had seven assists. He had one turnover. I thought he was good defensively when he was in there. Yeah. Three or four from three, two, that he's keeping the teams consistently honest. They can't just leave him at 41% for the season. And that's been one of the issues with him down the stretch is he won't shoot. So they don't have to guard him tonight. They had to guard him again. Even though he didn't play the clutch minutes, he had 27 minutes. I thought he was really good. Let's give Myron Gardner a little credit here. This is a guy who was a two way at the beginning of the year. He's playing 16 minutes. He did some good things. What's appealing to me about him is as opposed to this archetype that they've typically had. There was athleticism there that allows him to play in some of these matchups and guard up. I thought the 16 minutes he gave them six points five rebounds to assist. No turnovers also in a game like this huge tip in to when they needed a bucket. I forgot exactly what minute it was, but there was a huge tip in that he had.

And there was a lot of those kind of buckets are played the night. I think we'll exemplify that too. Yes. We'll go to the play tonight and we'll go to the player the game after that. But two more things here. We're getting 31 minutes tonight and closing again is meaningful. And the one other guy I wanted to touch on a little bit is him again and continuing to lean into Yaka Jonas a little bit. But I thought Larsen's attacking early in the game matter. He was on the floor a lot. He was going straight to the basket. They pretty much got something from everybody and then bam tonight. I don't have a problem Greg with him taking 26 shots. I don't. I know we've got none of the comments he's going for missing 16 of them. He missed the bunny late. I get it. The clutch stuff has not been great this year. He missed all five of his threes, but I want him taking shots in games like this. He had 26. He had 12 rebounds. He had four assists. He also had no turnovers, especially with norm out. You just have to throw the efficiency stuff out the window with bam a little bit and

just let that sheer volume stack up for him because he ultimately ended up finding pocket where he could be a impactful offensively, even though the efficiency wasn't there. The rebounding is there. The defense is there. So I thought he played a good overall game considering the chaotic nature as Brady said. That's a good word for this game. It was fun. And something that I also think we need to hit on is that the heat hit 18 threes to Horn to Charlotte's 19, but Charlotte attempted 52 to Miami's 38. So like they got up so many more threes and for the heat to be able to withstand the runs and get this one on the road, it's a huge win. They've been beating the crap out of teams lately. I want to sign another number here, but I'll do it. Let's do the play of the night first and then we'll close with the player of the game. Let's get to the play of the night because I know Greg wants to get to that one. Hey, it's Ethan Scholar for five on the floor in the five reason sports network.

com use the code f i v e and now it's time for the x ray of the play of the day brought to us by our friends over at mobile CRM and staffing services Nelson and his team will bring the x ray equipment and the staffing to you if you work in a hospital or a medical office get a consultation today at c-rman staffing dot com or give them a call at five six one eight nine one ninety six twenty their fleet of trucks at your service again it's mobile CRM and staffing services five six one eight nine one ninety six twenty and now the x ray of the play of the day I mean it could be any of Tyler shots down the stretch but Greg you had one something specific I'm shouting out Drew Smith on the tipping that was the one that sealed the game for me I felt like that was when they shut it down in charlie and so I'm giving Drew Smith it was it might have been his only bucket I can't really remember now but it was a huge one and so that's the one I'm sneaking in here but Tyler's jumper

was so pure on so many of those that you're right like there was one dribble hand off with bam where he just stepped back and it was the smooth it looked like Glenn rice honestly shout out to him but no I'm I'm giving Drew Smith the nod for that tip in late that was a huge game and I think it pushed it to seven and that was basically out of reach for the hornets yeah again closing with Drew tonight and I thought Drew earned those minutes the way that he played I'm gonna give Mac tomorrow the floor here which I don't always do but I just I got to throw this at Brady before we get to the player of the night I'll throw this one out there so I want to your opinion on this do you have a problem with bam taking 26 shots Brady in a game like this but for those those who can't see the comment look at Brady being silent while Ethan and Greg say they like bam taking that many shots no I think it's a good thing for Tyler to be the official player and bam to kind of be the tone setter I thought because a lot of bam shots I mean over five from three it was just his three while wasn't falling at certain points but a lot of the stuff they need him attacking like they need him putting his head down and going to

the basket and he was doing that a large large target to the game I mean I thought he was if he didn't if he got deterred by his shot attempts to go into that fourth quarter Miami wouldn't have won this game because he was huge in that fourth quarter he the start of the fourth I think he had like six or eight in the first six minutes of the fourth and he ended up with 12 in the quarter but Tyler had a huge third quarter as we know he gets up a bunch of threes he goes to bench he needs a pocket of time to kind of sit down and you know take a breath they had to survive offensively in that pocket of the game and bam kind of carried them through that he got them some tough buckets yet so a lot of mid ranges where he was kind of getting some followways to fall he had the one where they extended it to seven I think with six minutes to go where Tyler kind of hit a couple threes and then they imbouted to bam like three seconds on the shot clock and he stepped back on that baseline I kind of liked the game he played just because he didn't have many advantages because he was most of the time he was on the floor it was when Diabata was out there it wasn't when Cockburner was out there so he doesn't have the the foot speed to get past

and do certain things it was a tougher matchup they were switching all over him so he maybe didn't have as many opportunities at the rim so he had to make up for that with some mid ranges and some short jumpers so when you're without wiggins and shot attempts and obviously norm shot attempts and Tyler's working a little bit more off the ball and you're kind of just like there's somebody's going to take these shots like at that point and I said I'll go into this game my ame's role players might be important in this game but Tyler and bam are going to win them a game in Charlotte like that's you your best players have to be your best players if you want to go in a big game like this and I felt like tonight they're best players were the best players and taking a combined 46 shot attempts if that's what it's going to take that's what it's going to take great let's get to player the night let's close this thing but I'm going to have to tie a little more and now it's time for the A-aggressive insurance player of the night sponsored by our friend Lynette you can find her at insurancefilonette.com that's with two ends and two T's insurancefilonette.com

if you need car insurance renters insurance homeowners insurance or any other type of insurance she's the person to go to based in Lauderdale she services the entire tri-county area here in South Florida and she will make sure to get you the best deal she'll probably talk to you about the heat while you're at it reach out to her insurancefilonette.com and now player of the game here's the thing about this Greg there's been so much negativity around Tyler's season which I talked about earlier and while I don't think this is a deep playoff run team you don't either none of us really believe that I do think that teams can start to build a little belief if they hit their stride at the right time it doesn't mean they're going to win a first round series or anything like that we've talked about they're not going to tank they weren't going to pivot in any way they're going to try try to push forward right now though they're on the verge of a six seed they're not that far from a five seed they've got some tiebreaker issues here they've got a game against Detroit Sunday which I think the crowd's actually going to be pretty

into and I think Tyler here is playing the best offensive basketball I've seen him play and things are kind of clean right now like it right it's it's it's turned back to Bam and Tyler we talked about that last week and I there are limitations to that there is a ceiling to that but there's also clarity in that and I'll just I'll throw this at you because this is going to be a topic that we're going to get into nor pal was their best offensive player for the first two thirds of the season right first half of the season there's no argument about that yep for sure so where do we go now it kind of shows you there's a couple things one we started the season saying oh crap how are they going to get through this stretch with no Tyler and they surprised us and then very similarly norm goes down and we say oh crap how they're going to get through the stretch without norm and they've what six games above 500 they are one tenth of a percentage

point out of six and a game out of fifth they're a game out of the fifth seed everyone who wants them to get a lottery pick anything could happen with this playing atmosphere right because they could I mean that would be a fun ass play in game Charlotte Miami by the way but they're right in the mix here for one of these playoff seeds and they've talked about wanting to get out of the play in bam is emphasized it they're playing their best basketball and they're at their best record from an above 500 perspective so the Detroit game is a big one I think that team's been pushing people around and so it's another test for Miami number that stuck out to me tonight Brady who is the old display on the floor was a band well he didn't play anybody tonight is older than 28 and this is what we've talked about on recent pods now they will get power back they will get Wiggins back so they'll have two guys you know in their early 30s will be out there but this is

kind of what they wanted to do this year improve while getting younger so it's starting to turn into that a little bit they had guys contributing tonight that we didn't expect to contribute this year nobody was talking about my ring gardener contributing this year nobody was really talking about yaka chowness contributing this year we were wondering if this was going to be a red shirt year and he was going to spend the entire time down at Sioux Falls because slow is going to stick him there they've now gotten experience for their first round pick they found another of these plugin play developmental guys which again will keep them from overpaying some of the others which is the way that they should operate particularly with that archetype you know that kind of defensive you know two way sort of wing type that that sizes up there are some decent things happening right now again it doesn't mean they're positioned to win a championship or anything but there are six games over 500 and I think one thing that was mentioned here in the chat and I think there's there's some truth to this just having been around the team a little bit particularly for training camp forward how has great respect in that room and has been a great partner to bam as far as

being a leader but they relate to Tyler like if you if you look at like the outings that they've gone on all that sort of stuff he's right in the mix with all of those guys like he fits with this group because he's still at 26 years old right he's just the vibes have never been the question I do think no but I but I think I think they're going to start to get some belief in him here and and also the way that now you can trust Larson as a starter and as a closer the way that Hawkeyes has come back Brady I'll let you close it I don't think I think there's belief in Tyler and there's belief in norm but I don't think there's a lot of belief in them next to each other so like I I don't think they they believe in Tyler more than they believe in norm like I like the way that's freeze with that said when you're kind of talking about some of this stuff you're like yeah norm was their best offensive player in the season Jaime was kind of right in that that range as well well let's give you a real luxury to possibly have both of those guys coming off the bench for you heading into a potential

you know late season run because I don't see a situation where they're sticking those two guys back out there into the starting lineup I don't see a situation where you're 26 year old that just drop 35 points in a big game and Charlotte is moving back to the bench like that it's out of the question wow and if Tyler isn't hey it norms come off the bench Brady I think it's very possible I mean if Tyler is able yesterday I said yesterday I think that's what's happening if Tyler comes back and is willing to do it and come off the bench and he kind of took that role I mean I don't think there's any reason why norm wouldn't as well coming up and he has the personality to do it as well I mean he's done it already in his career I mean the issue is I mean he just had an all-star season doing the starting thing so I think it makes it a little bit tougher but I think he value he also want to championship he knows what it takes to win a championship and I think there's a realization there I think there's a human level where it's like okay yeah this if we want this thing to work it's gonna be one of us like it's gonna be one of us at a certain time

so that's a later question I mean because as we I keep saying it's like we keep like having this conversation but it never ends up actually happening or then both will come back and somebody also go down and then they'll both be playing so like this is probably against conversation but like if all things do line up I think that's where they're gonna end up landing and then suppose gonna have some fun with some rotations and be able to figure that stuff out but I think that's a good problem to have I think if they're able to kind of look at themselves in the mirror and say this doesn't work and able to work around that I think that's a lot better than trying to force themselves into it like they've done in past years with certain guys and throwing themselves saying like we have to make this work like we have to make Terry Tyler work next to each other in the backboard now we have to make Tyler and Norm if it doesn't work it doesn't work it's time that you'll go in a different direction and work around it Greg I'll close this with you then because I love how Brady and you hit a bunch of interesting topics there and I agree with you about all of it but you will always avoid the contract question here because I think that's the single biggest question so I put this up here because Brady doesn't want to do the off-course stuff which I get it but Gonzalo put this up there so Greg this is what it comes down to for me

Norm has to come off the bench now just as I thought Tyler had to come off the bench earlier this year but there needs to be a conversation had right and the conversation needs to not just be with Spowe it needs to be with the front office the conversation needs to be with Spowe Goren's rockets did this Dwayne Wade did this okay but Goren did it on a plain team as a playoff team right until they put him back in the starting lineup Goren's around the team now Dwayne's around the team some there has to be a conversation that Spowe has with Norman Norm as an adult okay and always and I think he will understand that if if and I should save this for a podcast for tomorrow if the front office has a conversation with Norman says this is not going to affect your extension they have to have that I think that they 100 percent I think that that'll be a universally aligned on thing like part of Norm buying into a role like that if they were to secure a top six seed and have even some semblance of a competitive three six matchup let's just say that

part of Norm buying in in that way would go longer would go a longer way I believe with the organization then him pushing to start because he's trying to maximize his earning potential so I think that that temperature check would absolutely be they may not even need to speak about it honest they may not need to because I bet there have been conversations that have been had already but there has to be it's complicated because Tyler's situation is up in the air also but Norman situation is more is more pressing because his contract is up at the end of the year and they have to have that conversation because it isn't the best interest of the team and that's a guy who would understand the best interest of the team but also I understand he wants one more contract okay he's 32 years old they have to assure him but I'm with you Greg I think that they would make the point to him that around here if you want to be here which is what he says around here it matters more to fit in with the team concept and we're not taking away any of your money if you're

coming off the bench I think if they have that conversation with him I think he's a type of person that will be fine with it and then you deal with the Tyler situation later but I'm with Brady you can't put them back in the starting lineup together it's not an option it's that the team will go backwards okay what they do in the last six minutes I'm not really sure all right lots of comments coming in here but we're going to close this one up tonight we'll have another podcast tomorrow thanks everyone for joining dealing with my crappy wireless appreciate it and also thanks to Maxumon for challenging Brady on that what we should have a nightly Brady challenge actually out of the comments we'll do that all right I'm gonna I don't want that smoke with it's two juicy beef patties and three slices of melted cheese topped with tangy big arch sauce the big arch is what happens when you start making a McDonald's burger and never stop the big arch the most McDonald's McDonald's burger yet for a limited time you're having a good time you're out drinking with the boys now it's time to pay the tab 11,352 dollars and 47 cents wait what
