In an unprecedented creative milestone, BAG Production Records announces the simultaneous release of eight new albums by acclaimed clarinetist, composer, and improvisational master Ben Goldberg on August 8."For me the number is basically eight," Goldberg notes, "on account of having eight letters in my first name and eight in my last name, and on account of having been born on 8/8."Recorded over the last several years, the "8 x 8" collection embodies Goldberg’s evolving musical vocabulary, featuring exploratory cross-generational collaborations: Two duos, three trios, two quartets, and a quintet.A Legacy of Radical Improvised Music8 x 8 reflects decades of musical exploration. Raised in a household steeped in speech-communication research — a background that informs his rhythmically unique, speech-like phrasing — Goldberg honed his technique under clarinet master Rosario Mazzeo and studied with Joe Henderson and Steve Lacy.In the 1980s Goldberg’s New Klezmer Trio (with drummer Kenny Wollesen), injected the raw, spatial energy of avant-garde jazz into traditional structures, leading to collaborations with artists including Andrew Hill, Nels Cline, Bobby Bradford, and John Zorn. This musical heritage is fully realized across the "8 x 8" collection, capturing the sheer velocity of his current creative circles.
