Britain led a risky reconnaissance mission near Loch Ninh in September 1968. Under heavy enemy fire, he rescued wounded comrades, directed airstrikes from an enemy camp despite his own injury, and helped save 85 fellow soldiers' lives. In Afghanistan, 24-year-old Hollis from New York City shooted a wounded Polish officer from a suicide bomber during a base attack in August 2013. He directed troops to safety first, then returned to help, giving his life in the process. During World War II, Edmonds stood up to German captors at a prisoner camp in January 1945.

Families of the recipients attended the East Room ceremony, including the Polish officer Hollis saved, and Edmonds' son who pushed for recognition.
