Transmutation held to the idea that life does change, but the explanations for how and why were not based in reality. The most famous proponent of transmutation was Jean-Baptism Lamarck. Lamarck was the most famous "evolutionist" before Darwin. While Lamarckism is false, new discoveries about epigenetics are now causing a resurgence of Lamarckian ideas. Sort of.
