Train the Opposite Habit | Stop Feeding the Pattern You Want to Break
About this episode
A habit becomes powerful because you keep practicing it.
Every time you react the same way, you strengthen the pathway that leads back to that reaction. Epictetus understood this as a fundamental part of character: habits are reinforced through repeated action, which means they can also be weakened by practicing something different.
If you are impatient, practice patience.
If you are easily angered, practice remaining composed.
If you avoid difficult things, practice doing what is difficult.
If you constantly seek approval, practice acting without applause.
The goal isn't to simply tell yourself to stop. The goal is to give yourself a new response to rehearse until it becomes more natural.
You don't change your character by thinking about the person you want to become.
You change it by repeatedly behaving like that person.
Train the opposite habit.
Then repeat it until the old pattern no longer controls you.
