This is a day in sports yesterday with the capitals making moves. Tray Young making his debut for the Wizards. You got NFL moves. Let's open up the jockey sports page and get into it. It's all right. Brought to you by our good friends over at Open Road to Stilling. It's time to raise your standards. Open Road to Stilling Company over in Reston, Virginia. Now available at Virginia, Northern Virginia ABC stores. Whether it's the bold spice of Eagle Eye, Rye, the smooth depth of independence, bourbon or the rich, ready to pour maple old fashioned.
This is whiskey done right. Check it out. Head on over there and mention us. So yeah, I mean a couple of caps players dealt yesterday. Carly going in a high for a conditional first round pick. And a future third round pick as well. Nicked out also traded. So a couple of guys, we like both those guys. But we love Nicked out. We've had Carlson on at least, I think at least a couple of times and Dowd used to be a regular guest of the show. I mean, it's funny. You would think we've had Carlson on shirt, certainly. But he was here 17 seasons. Yeah, we didn't really. And we never had him for like a full season, right? He's always on with somebody else. Right. He's a Boston guy, isn't he? Isn't he from Boston? He's a mascot, yeah. Definitely from a mass. Um, so every chase guy kicks. Just kind of your thoughts on kind of the direction that the caps want to go in there. I mean, I just think it's the pain for reality when you're outside of the playoffs and grasping for one of the last spots. I mean, you don't want to just let these guys walk for free. I mean, John Carlson, a pending free agent.
If you don't have plans to sign him, you might as well get picks back in return. And same thing with Dowd. You know, he's younger than Carlson, but no other guy who's been here for a long time. Eight seasons here with the caps came in right after the cup win. So that was a little bit unfortunate timing for him. Yeah. You know, like two guys that are great locker room dudes that are going to be gone from the mix. But when you're an older, slower team, and see other teams passing you in the Eastern Conference, you have to reload and revamp. And that's what the front office is chosen to do. Yeah. And it's painful to see those guys go, but this is the way things work in sports. You can't always have guys retire for the same team they played for for 17 plus seasons. It would have been great if that was the way it ended. It's not going to end that way for Carly. This is what the team felt like they had to do. Right. Right. And it sucks because you're growing accustomed to watching these guys play. You feel like you borderline know them after this many years. You wish them the best in Anaheim,
but this is what the front office felt compelled to do. Yeah. It's a little bit like. And when you go to Anaheim, you're kind of off the grid because no one, you know, for people here, sure. So what I mean, right. It's a little bit like what the commanders are trying to do. They're trying to get younger and they're trying to get fast, right? Yeah. Carly's old and he's slow. Yeah, I mean, I think most caps fans, I'm sure there's a small percentage of caps fans who don't like it just because of who he is and how long he's been here and the fact that he's, he helped them win a cup. But I think I'm not sure that they don't like it. It's the right phrase. It's just that it's a, they understand it, but it's melancholy kind of feeling. But it makes sense. Yeah. It does. It makes sense. I wonder if they're gonna deal anybody else today before three o'clock. Right. I'm gonna guess some make another deal. Probably not another big name, but. No, but I mean, it's not gonna be bigger than like, there aren't many names left bigger than Carly. I wasn't there. They're not trading over. No, well, would they trade like I would be distraught if they traded like Stromer? I don't think that's happening. I mean, they just reinked him to an extension.
I think last off season and he's relatively young. I'm just saying like that's a marketable player. Right. I don't want him to trade him. It's a team that needs scoring an offense. I'd be stunned if they dealt Dylan Strong. And he hasn't scored a ton of goals this year. I think he's third or fourth in points for them. Right around 17 goals. I'm gonna guess for Dylan Strong. So he hasn't had his best season, but still. I think he's one of their best players. And Carly goes to Anaheim. Like we said last segment, Anaheim is one point out of the Pacific Division lead right behind Vegas. So they're having a really good year. And they're going to the playoffs. Might win the division. So they obviously thought that Carly can help them do that. So he's going out to the West Coast, man. So willing to deal picks for what's at least for them a rental? To try to make a deep run in the playoffs. Right. There was a pretty big trade in the NFL. Now it's not official. It doesn't become official until March 11th. But DJ Moore goes from Chicago to Buffalo. So DJ Moore goes and a 2026 fifth round pick
from the Bears for a 2026 second round pick. So the bills trade a second round pick for DJ Moore. And that was one of their weaknesses. Is that big name receiver? I feel like it's for Josh Allen. But kind of reeks of desperation on the bills part. Like I feel like this is an overpay because they're guaranteeing more of his salary. They're taking on a piece of his bear salary. And they gave up that amount of draft capital. But he produces. I like it. I don't love it. Now if you're Josh Allen, you love it because it gives you another weapon throw to and they desperately need them in Buffalo. Two of their top three leading receivers were tight ends. Yeah. They needed receiver. I understand. He's not one of the top guys in league anymore but he can still produce. I think he's got four 1,000 yard seasons. He made some big catches this year. But in Chicago, they were phasing them out. It was becoming Roma Dunes A number one. Birdon was coming on. They ran both of them. They have two really good tight ends in Lovland. I like it from a perspective for Buffalo's offense
because they need it. I just feel like it was it was an expensive acquisition for them. Yeah, we'll see. But if he goes out and I have a second out picks or sometimes they hit sometimes they don't. If he goes out and has 1,400 receiving yards and scores a dozen touchdowns, it's going to be well worth it. Yeah, I don't know if he's going to go that high. I think he's going to be well below those sorts of numbers. It's a later second round pick. Right. But those are still valuable. Of course, a late second round pick this year, Adam Peters. But they're window, he would like one. Their window is more open with DJ more on the field as a weapon for Josh Allen. I just feel like if you're great, like I haven't seen grades on this trade from like CBS Sports or ESPN, I'm going to guess they're probably giving the bares props for the deal and probably digging the bills that it was an expensive acquisition. Well, I'll tell you what CBS Sports gives it. They give the bills a B minus and they give the bares a B. So he's slight wind for the bares, they feel. Yeah. I mean, look, Josh Allen does need to go to receiver
and they had some injuries at receiver, but they mean, you know, if he can give you 70 to 80 catches and seven, eight touchdowns. How old is he again? He's only 28, I believe. Josh Allen had Tyrell Shavers, Brandon Cooks, Gabe Davis and Keon Coleman, hence the desperation at the overpay. In my opinion, forgot Curtis Samuel. Well, I mean, and a lot of those guys will hurt. Right. I think it's a good move because he produces, he's usually on the field and you're giving up a second round pick and I give him up first. Keon Coleman was a big whiff and he was a high pick. So they decided, DJ more of our guy and maybe they go out and get somebody else or draft somebody. So I like the deal. That's all the Rams made a deal for Trent McDuffy. Yeah, that was a big deal. Like four picks. They always give up their picks. Yeah, they give up four picks. And okay, you know why, especially this year, they're like, we have the Falcons pick.
We could just deal our late first round pick. What does that matter? To us, that's trash if we can get a corner like McDuffy because we hoodwinked the Falcons because they wanted James Pierce who we saw what happened with him about a month ago in the traffic stop. I believe it was in Florida. Right. Yeah, so they have extra draft capital and they're willing to deploy it to get good veterans on their squad. To mean they're gonna nix manual forbs. I don't know. I don't know other plans for him. We'll see. So yeah, there was some, those were pretty big names. By the way, my daughter just waking up in New York City and she's seeing the Carlson trade and she's flipping out. She's going, no, but you know, it's a sentimental. Sure, of course. Yeah, tell her it's a good move. Yeah. Yeah. All right, so the other big story here locally was Tray Young playing making his debut for the Wiz last night at home. And they lose to the jazz by 10. I watched the first quarter and a half pretty much
then I started to watch some local college hoops. But the jazz, I mean, the Wiz were just so bad defensively. The jazz did whatever they wanted when I was watching. And the jazz didn't play a bunch of their stars. I don't know, Tray Young, not shy about launching 28 to 35. He likes to jack up. But he's been like, that's what he does. That's what he does. Yeah, that's funny. I knew that part about him. I didn't realize that I don't use the right phrase, but like as bouncy as he is as, you know what I mean? Like as easy as it is for him to get to the basket. It's a great floater game. That great floater, but like his left hand and just that left the fakes. He's got the lefty finish where he did the fake. Oh, yeah. That's great. I went from six to 12 with the quick, I was like, whoa. Yeah. He's really, he's really fun to watch. He is fun to watch. He is entertaining. He had seven guys and double figures last night, but the one which just jumped out to me was Ju-Ju-Ris. I mean, he had a 20 rebound game and I'm watching it and Chris Miller's talking about it.
He's the first guy on the Wizards to do this since Google Yada, right? And Jeff Ruins. What's a rookie record? Yeah. Seven rookie record for the Wizards. But he's an offense. But he offensively, he's about as talented as his sister. He's offensively challenged. But he's already offensively. And his free throw. But I watched it. But it was me. Oh, his free throw form. I hate it. He was a prey. No, I know. But it's, yeah. It's so important. Good for him on room form, but room form too. He's not fun to watch. He's not a fun player to watch. If you like rebounding his fun, it's a limited potential. The Wizards are his third team already. God bless him. I hope he has a 15 year career. I'm just saying he's not fun to watch. Yeah. For a tanking team, it's fine. Throw him in and start him for the rest of the year. Yeah, it's perfect. I don't get a hundred million. Seven guys and double figures. I think you're encouraged from what you saw from Trayon. And they lost the game. I was super excited. The tank continues. There's a great outcome for the Wiz. Yeah. And again, Will Riley continues.
He's just a sizzling hot when he gets the ball. I just, man, I'm falling in love with it. What was the official attendance last night? Do we know? I heard it was way more than people anticipating. I'm sure it was. For Trayon Young's debut. Definitely early. That was a lot of the game. You heard the fans chanting ironically. Defeat. Right. Defeat. Let me see it. Let me see it. Attendance. Defeat. Attendance. Defeat. One side of the arena wasn't chanting. No. And the other side's going defense. No. Defeat. And how many were there compared to normal? They did not hit the over. It was an under. That's true. Probably, I'd say they average like 10 or something like that a night. So a little bit less. Almost almost double. Almost up. But the energy. It was the big difference. It was big. Wizards fans actually cheering when they'd score the defense. That's the second time I've heard defense chance the whole year. Second time. The ovation. That's the game. The ovation he got when they introduced him in a starting lineup and then scored the first bucket. It was loud. Yeah.
It was really loud. But fun to watch. And I knew he was a shooter and he took crazy shots. I know he was the finisher that he is. And I didn't know he had all the ball fakes and all that. Yeah. He's fun. You have to be fun to watch. That's what it's all about. But they couldn't stop at the end. You know, Jason Bellacca defense that kid Collier was just bully balling him. But just imagine that with SARS and AD, right? Yeah. So you got to be totally different. Just want to re-protect him. And the jazz, by the way, Ben's there. Three of their score from the night before at 30, which is county. They bet three of their big car. Ben's Lori Markin is a preennial all-star. All their big guys Walker Kessler. Yeah. They're front-off and probably so pissed. They were fine. They're definitely taking a lot of life. These are glorified summer league games. They are. Let's just take it that way. What were you going to say about these? I said, do you want to hear Trey after the game? Absolutely. Kind of talking about like the energy. Oh, you're all. Yeah. Every single word he says. Well, I mean, I definitely felt the energy of night. I mean, just from all the fans, every time I sit down or being the game or checking
to the game, or you definitely felt it. And that's what I want here. Like I want the fans to feel involved, to feel involved, a part of our winning in the future. But even now, like, being a part of the growth and being a part of the young guys getting better. Because this is the time that you get to see guys take the bumps and bruises and learn from the game of NBA and as the years go on, you get to kind of see the fruits of that labor. So I think it's very important that not only me as a teammate, but everybody outside the building, as fans, I mean, just really dive into this team. I mean, because this is this is a special group. And I really believe in the potential that we got with all the young guys in the future we got here. It's going to be interesting next year. It is. Very cool. I didn't know what Drew didn't talk about. I didn't know his dad was a stud in college. Texas Tech. He talked about how his dad famously had 41 against Kansas in 99. I think I assume is that one good and was there and not sure when good and was there.
I think he said he played against his dad, his dad had 41 against them and then played professionally in Europe. I had no idea. I had no idea. That kind of good hoops. Yeah. Yeah. Ace Bailey, who was the fifth active aggressive lit it up. He did whatever he wanted. Well, I mean, he had a career high. It's okay. Had to have been a career high. Yeah. You seem offended that and or surprise the Wizards are not playing because he lost a bet. Of course. I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised they lost the game. I'm not. And he be drew good and was at Kansas 99 through 2002. Yeah. So I think he was there when he did it. Yeah. But Ace, I mean, he hit seven threes. He also had impressive donker. Well, they were all wide open threes. That's how it is. There was no hand in the face. Yeah. I believe the two teams combined hit 33 threes. Yeah. Surprise they didn't hit the over. I think the Wiz hit 15. It was at 18 and 15. Yeah. So he, of course, was selected just before Trey Johnson.
Right. Remember, we were a lot of days. And I believe Ace Bailey wanted to come here when he was doing all that pre-draft shenanigans stuff. The word on the street was is that he was trying to orchestrate his way here to DC. I mean, looking at the draft, last year's draft, which I think was panned outside of flag has been pretty good because Dylan Harper is a good contributor for the spurs who are really, really good team. VJ Edgecombe's been good for the 76ers. Con Canipple might win Rookie of the Year over Cooper Flag. That team's done a turn. Flag's back. Bailey. And then Trey. And then he got some drop off, I think. Yeah. I think Cooper Flag played last night. So he's back. The tank. He didn't mention their queen. He said moment. Yeah. The tanking teams. The maps lose last night at Orlando. Jazz Wiz. Obviously both tanking. We saw what happened there. The nets lost against the heat. They got blown out. I didn't touch the Pellies King's game, but the King's lost. I should have, but I didn't. I stayed up to watch the first half of the Lakers Nuggets game.
Yeah. Yokech almost had a quad double. And that quad column turnovers had nine. There you go. He had a ridiculous. I can't count. You know, oh, yeah. Definitely does count. I mean, nobody's going to brag about a quad double when you have 12 turnovers. He's so good. Lakers. It's my passing is so good. Well, they're playing a back-to-backer tonight and they're playing the Pacers at home out in L.A. All right. They should be able to take care of the Pacers. I'm taking the Lakers tonight in some sort of a play. Get more out of every mile when you share the ride to work with Carpooling. You'll have time to relax, save money, and pick up new friends. And then the maps are at the Celtic, Celtics are laying 16 in that game. The last time. This is supposed to be Jason Tatum's debut. That's right. Which is a pretty stunning turnaround for a guy that tours Achilles and the playoffs. Yeah. A hundred months ago. Yeah, it's crazy. All right. Quickly. Tough loss for our boy Dwayne Simkins and AU in the Patriot League quarter finals. They lost to Boston, you pretty much at the buzzer, 75, 73, so their season is, I assume it's over. I don't know if they'll get invited to one of these minor league tournaments, postseason tournaments. But AU loses to Boston, you kid hit a kind of fade away shot in the lane with about three seconds left. Break your heart. So AU finished the 16 and 16, 99 in the league and then Howard went down to Norfolk and beat them 84, 76. They're having a really, really good year. They're going to be the one seed in the Miak tournament, which will be next week. I think they'll play Delaware State, who's just bad. So Howard wins the regular season title in the Miak in the conference tournament starts
next week. So Kenny Blakeney and our boy Rod Balanis, they've been to the tournament two times since they've been there. Maybe three. So let's hope that they play really well in the conference tournament. The rest of the conference, especially Norfolk, isn't as good as they usually are. So it's very winnable. And a bad year for the locals. But yeah, we can push for hours when his mason's tournament next week, next week, yeah. Phone numbers 1-800-636-1067, as we mentioned, we'll talk some tray young with Che Hughes covers the Wizards from Monty Metal Sports at 8.45 Randolph Children's on the NCAA tournament at nine here on the fan.
