“Those aren’t buoys”

About this episode

Joseph Beuys was a German artist renowned for his influential role in performance art and conceptual works during the post-World War II era.[1]

## Early Life and War Experience

Born in 1921 in Krefeld, Beuys served in the Luftwaffe during World War II, surviving a plane crash in Crimea that he mythologized as being rescued by nomadic Tatars using fat and felt—materials central to his later art. He was wounded multiple times, captured by British forces in 1945, and returned home physically weakened before studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.[3][1]

## Artistic Innovations

Beuys pioneered "social sculpture," positing that everyone is an artist capable of shaping society through creativity, often using unconventional materials like fat, felt, and honey in actions (performances) tied to Fluxus and happenings. Key works include wrapping himself in felt, living with a coyote in "I Like America and America Likes Me," and explaining paintings to a dead hare.[4][1][3]

## Political Engagement

He founded groups like the German Student Party, Organization for Direct Democracy, and contributed to the Green Party, advocating pacifism, ecology, and direct democracy via performances and the Free International University. Dismissed from Düsseldorf Academy in 1972 for occupying it with students, Beuys remained a provocative figure until his death in 1986.[5][1][3]
