It was on this day, May 2, 1896, Bishop Thomas O'Gorman arrives in Sioux Falls as the new leader of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls. After Sioux Falls' first Catholic Bishop, Martin Marty, was appointed as the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Cloud. Bishop O'Gorman is obviously the namesake of O'Gorman High School and Junior High in Sioux Falls, as well as the newly-christened Bishop O'Gorman Catholic Schools formerly Sioux Falls Catholic School System. Already a renowned scholar and church leader, Thomas O'Gorman, brought his zeal for education and growth of the Catholic Church with him to Sioux Falls. In his 25 years as Bishop of the Sioux Falls Diocese, he would start many new churches, oversee the fundraising planning and completion of St. Joseph's

Columbus College was envisioned as a Midwest collegiate headquarters for the Catholic Church similar to what Notre Dame is to the old Northwestern region in Indiana. However, the school was unable to overcome a series of difficult beginnings with the passing of Bishop O'Gorman and ending with the onset of the Great Depression, then World War II. Today, rather than fulfilling O'Gorman's vision for an elite educational facility in Sioux Falls, the buildings were repurposed as the Royal Sea Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital.
