Did you know one of the first Westerners to travel to Japan and China on a peaceful mission to build relationships with the people of those nations? Was from right here in Sioux Falls? Bishop William Hare, the Episcopal Bishop over the Dakota region, although up to his waste and work in his own diocese, was unanimously voted by the Episcopal House of Bishops to leave Dakota for a time and oversee matters in the Kingdom of Japan that happened on February 4th, 1891. Already famous in this area for leading the fundraising and construction for all St. School and the Calvary Episcopal Cathedral. As well as his strict preaching against divorce,

1:02drunkenness and other vices, he felt at his duty to answer the call to the House of Bishops and he left for Japan in March of 1891 and he remained active in the missionary field of Japan until returning to Sioux Falls in August. Not one to leave unfinished business. Bishop Hare returned to Japan in January of 1892. During his second visit, Hare also spent a couple of weeks working in China. Hare returned to Tokyo to hold convocation before heading home on this day in 1892. While in Japan, he confirmed 415 people licensed upwards of 30 catacasts and he ordained six deacons.
