It's March 29th, and today climate change is a major environmental issue. But we might not have known how serious it is, if not for this day in 1958, when Dr. Charles David Keeling started regularly measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide levels at the Monaloa Observatory in Hawaii. Over the years, his research revealed what is now called the Keeling Curve, a graph showing continuous measurements that highlight the rapid buildup of carbon dioxide.
Surprising fact, as part of the International Geophysical Year, Keeling also received funding to monitor the South Pole, but budget cuts in the 1960s forced him to abandon that project. Also on this day in history, in 1973, U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam. In 1974, the U.S. space probe Mariner visited Mercury. And in 1982, Michael Jordan made the winning shot that secured North Carolina, the NCAA title. That's all for today. Come back tomorrow to learn a little bit more about the world around you. Be kind to yourself and others, and enjoy the rest of your day. www.marinerday.com
