The Voortrekker Monument

Tea With George

About this episode

Voortrekker Monument by Steve Adams

In 1992, I was in South Africa where I met a family with whom I still communicate.  The family would have me over to their house on weekends and would arrange outings for me.  On one such outing, they took me to the Capital City, Pretoria where we toured some of the monuments.
One place, called the Voortrekker Monument was fascinating to me.  Having watched the Indiana Jones movies, I was impressed that this Granite monument actually had a cenotaph in the exact center of a pit. It is viewable from the Hall of Heros and every December 16th at exactly noon; a ray of sun will shine through the domed ceiling and strike a special spot on the stone.  It was like a dream come true to actually experience a real place like this.
That family will always be special to me.  They took me in as a foreign stranger and generously showed me the sights and sounds of their amazing country.  They still live in Boksburg and their children have become globetrotters too.
