The Volcanoes Hiding Beneath the Ocean | Full Documentary

About this episode

More than 70% of Earth's surface is covered by ocean.

And beneath all that water is a volcanic world.

Thousands of volcanoes rise from the seafloor, hidden beneath kilometers of water. Some are enormous. Some are constantly producing new rock. Others remain quiet for centuries before erupting.

In The Volcanoes Hiding Beneath the Ocean, we descend beneath the waves to explore the hidden volcanoes shaping Earth's crust and the strange ecosystems that thrive around them.

Most underwater volcanism happens along the boundaries of tectonic plates, especially along the enormous mid-ocean ridges that stretch across the seafloor.

Here, magma rises from Earth's interior.

It cools.

New crust forms.

And the ocean floor slowly spreads.

But some underwater volcanoes are isolated from plate boundaries.

These include volcanic seamounts created as tectonic plates move over hotspots deep within Earth's mantle.

Underwater eruptions can look completely different from the eruptions we see on land.

The immense pressure of deep water changes how gases expand and how lava behaves.

Instead of producing towering ash clouds, many submarine eruptions create pillow-shaped lava formations as molten rock rapidly cools in seawater.

But these volcanoes can still be incredibly powerful.

They can reshape the seafloor, release enormous amounts of heat, and create hydrothermal vents.

And those vents lead to one of the strangest environments on Earth.

Hydrothermal vents can release superheated, mineral-rich water from beneath the seafloor.

There is no sunlight.

Yet life thrives.

Giant tube worms, specialized bacteria, clams, crabs, and other organisms can survive around these extreme environments

Volcanic ridges.

And enormous geological forces operating in complete darkness.

The ocean isn't hiding an empty seafloor.

It's hiding one of the most active volcanic landscapes on Earth.

The Volcanoes Hiding Beneath the Ocean.

A journey into the darkness beneath the waves to discover the volcanoes, vents, and strange ecosystems shaping our planet from below.
