The ocean looks calm from above.
But beneath the surface, Earth's crust is constantly being built, broken, and reshaped by volcanoes hidden in complete darkness.

Most underwater volcanic activity occurs along tectonic plate boundaries. Along the enormous mid-ocean ridges, magma rises from Earth's interior, cools, and creates new seafloor.
Other volcanoes form around hotspots, creating seamounts that can rise thousands of meters from the ocean floor.

Underwater eruptions behave differently from eruptions on land.
The immense pressure of deep water changes how volcanic gases expand and how lava cools.
Molten rock can rapidly harden into rounded structures called pillow lavas, building new sections of seafloor one eruption at a time.

These openings release hot, mineral-rich water from beneath the crust.
There is no sunlight.
Yet life thrives.

Specialized microorganisms use chemicals from the vents as an energy source through chemosynthesis.
They support entire ecosystems containing tube worms, clams, crabs, and other unusual organisms.
These communities show that life doesn't always need sunlight to build an ecosystem.

Scientists use sonar, remotely operated vehicles, underwater sensors, and research submarines to map this hidden volcanic landscape.
