Welcome to the Terrible Take, the mini podcast, telling Steelers Nation what's on our mind. I'm Josh Carney. In a long 17 game season, teams will need unharrowed pieces to step up in key spots and find a way to make plays, even if they're the low man on the roster at their position. The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be in good shape at Wild receiver with DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr, Roman Wilson, and Rookie Jeremy Bernard. But one name that can't be overlooked entering the season is Ben Skironik. He might be viewed as a special team's only piece after being a pro-buller there last season, but first year head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't see him that way. McCarthy spoke highly of Skironik on Wednesday, and it has me doubling down on the belief that Skironik could have a Jeff Janice or Jake Kumero like season for the Steelers. If you don't recognize those names, you aren't alone. But those two receivers play key roles for the Packers late in McCarthy's tenure, catching passes in big spots from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

When their names were called, they stepped up and produced. Skironik has a history of doing that, putting up 39 receptions in 2022 in Los Angeles. He hasn't been a big part of the passing game in Pittsburgh in his first two years, but in a more wide receiver-friendly scheme under McCarthy, he could see some opportunities. That's not to say he's going to put up 39 receptions again, but you can't forget about the dirt bag in the receiver room. He can do it all, and when his time comes, don't be surprised if he's making key plays once again.
