The Tell Tale Heart

The Shiver Show

About this episode

The Tell-Tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe was written in 1843, and is considered one of the greatest works of Gothic fiction.  Born in 1809 to two actor parents, Poe was pretty much guaranteed a life of poverty and hardship.  His actor father abandoned the family when he was young and then his mother died soon after.

He was fostered to the Allens, a wealthy family living in West Virginia.  Poe’s foster father alternated between spoiling young Poe and disciplining him harshly. Allen never formally adopted Poe and when Poe became a young man, Allen disowned him entirely.

Do these 'Daddy issues' make their way into the story of the Tell-Tale Heart? You be the judge. Note too that relationship between the story’s narrator and the old man is never clarified.
