About this episode
He wasn't a plumber. He wasn't a hero. Marco Bellini was just a young man in Queens, New York, in 1993—hooked on psychedelics. He called it "leveling up," telling friends he could hear coins dropping and see tunnels opening under his feet.
By winter, Marco was living underground—in storm drains, sewers, and crawl spaces—searching for a princess he swore was trapped in another castle. Months later, he was found barefoot and burned in a boiler room beneath Canal Street. On the brick wall, he had carved one message: "I found the boss fight."
Marco died in a psychiatric ward. His autopsy revealed spores in his lungs from mushrooms no one could identify. He thought it was a game. But real life never had an end screen.
