The Sean Trace Show #33 - Andrew Rowlands (Embrace Change)

About this episode

It's not every day that I can interview someone who had such an impact on my career and they didn't even know it.  In the summer of 2008, I was lucky enough to get a stand-in job on the movie "Angels and Demons" by Ron Howard.  One of the people that was on that shoot was Andrew Rowlands.  Andrew Rowlands is now a DOP working on some amazing projects in Hollywood, but at that time he was the 1st Camera on Angels.  I got to watch him and the rest of the team work day in and day out and most of my education in filmmaking comes from watching that camera team and I am forever thankful for his kindness and absolutely positive attitude.
In this episode, Andrew and I talk about his journey to becoming a DOP.  We talk about the power of technology and the importance of preparation as well as the need to constantly be updating your skillset and adapting to that new technology.  Next, we explore the discipline of coming up through the tradition of shooting film and some of what has been lost with the transition to digital.  After that, we explore the importance of having a plan and vision for your film that the entire cast and crew can unify behind during production.  Last, of all we look at his advice to new filmmakers to go out and just make it and his love for his job, and why he has no plans to retire.
From the bottom of my heart.  Thank you so much Andrew.  It was a real honor.
