The Reality Check_ Why Your Dating Life Isn't Broken

About this episode

Ever feel like dating is just a series of missed connections and constant letdowns? We often hear that the dating scene is broken, but maybe the problem isn't the people out there—it's the blueprint we are using to judge them. We are living in the golden age of romance fiction and high-production streaming dramas, where our leads are emotionally evolved, perfectly communicative, and always know exactly what to say in a crisis. When we binge-watch these stories, we are subconsciously setting a bar that real human beings—who are messy, tired, and imperfect—just cannot reach. This creates a friction between the fantasy of the ideal partner and the reality of the person sitting across from us at dinner. When your partner doesn't intuitively understand your emotional needs without you having to explain them, it feels like a failure, even though it is just human nature. Social media only turns up the volume on this dissatisfaction by showing us curated, filtered highlight reels of other people's relationships.
