Certain plants have an extraordinary ability known as phytomining, in which vegetation absorbs unusually high concentrations of metals from the soil.

Some plants known as hyperaccumulators can take up metals such as nickel and store surprisingly high concentrations in their leaves and stems without being poisoned by them.
Instead of treating metal-rich soils as unusable, scientists can investigate whether these plants can be cultivated, harvested, and processed to recover the concentrated metals.
The process begins underground.
Plant roots absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil. Hyperaccumulator species have evolved specialized mechanisms that allow them to tolerate and transport unusually high concentrations of certain elements.
After the plants grow, their biomass can be collected and processed.
The goal isn't to replace conventional mining everywhere.
Instead, phytomining could potentially provide another tool for recovering metals from low-grade deposits, contaminated soils, mine wastes, or areas where conventional extraction is difficult or environmentally costly.
The idea becomes especially interesting as demand grows for metals used in modern technology.
Nickel and other elements are essential to many industrial applications, and recovering resources from materials that were previously considered waste could become increasingly valuable.
But phytomining also has limitations.
Plants grow relatively slowly, metal concentrations vary by species and soil conditions, and large-scale processing still requires energy and infrastructure.
Even so, the concept completely changes how we think about the relationship between plants and geology.
Mining usually means digging into the Earth.
Phytomining asks whether, in some places, we can let plants do part of the work.
A field of plants may look ordinary from the surface.
But underground, their roots could be quietly collecting metal.
