Certain plants have evolved an extraordinary ability called phytomining. These plants can absorb unusually high concentrations of metals from metal-rich soils and store them in their leaves and stems.

There are still significant limitations.
Plants grow relatively slowly.
Metal concentrations vary between species and locations.
Soil chemistry affects how much metal plants can absorb.
And harvesting and processing the biomass still requires infrastructure and energy.
Even with those challenges, the concept changes the way we think about mining.
