The Physics of the Pedal_ How Fast is Too Fast

About this episode

We have all been there. You are running a few minutes late, the road ahead looks clear, and your foot naturally gets a little heavier on the gas pedal. It feels safe, right? But the reality of our roads tells a different story. Speeding is a silent epidemic, playing a massive role in about twenty-nine percent of all traffic fatalities each year. That translates to over eleven thousand lives lost annually in the United States alone. To understand why, we have to look at the unforgiving physics of kinetic energy. Speed does not just add a bit of risk; it changes the math of a crash in a dramatic way. When you increase your speed by fifty percent, the energy involved in a potential impact actually jumps by one hundred and twenty-five percent. The faster you move, the less time your brain has to process hazards and the further your vehicle travels before you even begin to brake. Psychologically, we are often our own worst enemies. We tend to suffer from an illusion of control, convincing ourselves that we are better drivers than the average person and can somehow defy the laws of physics.
