The Paradox_ Finding Peace in Being Alone
About this episode
We often use the words alone and lonely interchangeably, but in the world of psychology, they are worlds apart. Being alone is simply a physical state of being unaccompanied. It is a neutral, objective fact of life. Loneliness, on the other hand, is a subjective, often painful emotional experience. It is the feeling of being disconnected or lacking the companionship you crave. The problem is that our culture has started to conflate the two, framing any time spent in solitude as inherently dangerous or sad. This negative framing is actually backfiring. When we are taught to fear being alone, we become more likely to experience that hollow feeling of loneliness the moment we find ourselves without company. Think of it like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you see solitude as a burden, your brain shifts into a state of alarm rather than rest. However, when we flip the script and view solitude as a chosen, restorative state, the impact on our well-being is profound. Research consistently shows that people who embrace their own company tend to see a boost in creativity, better emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of self. It is a form of internal scaffolding that helps us stand a little taller, even when we are by ourselves.
