The Panopticon in Your Pocket_ Flock Safety

About this episode

Copy
Imagine driving to the grocery store, grabbing a coffee, and heading home. It feels like a private commute, but every time you pass a pole mounted with a camera, your location is logged, timestamped, and uploaded to a massive, interconnected network. In 2025 alone, Flock Safety reported that their technology helped solve over a million investigations and played a part in finding ten thousand missing people. Those are staggering statistics that highlight a clear benefit for public safety. But the pendulum is starting to swing as communities ask what the cost of that safety really is. We are moving past the simple question of whether these cameras work, and into a much darker debate about who actually holds the keys to the data. The heart of the problem is the network effect. When your local police department signs a contract with a private company, they might intend to track stolen vehicles, but that data is often accessible by agencies across state lines, including federal organizations like ICE or border patrol. Residents in cities like Westland, Michigan, and Tempe, Arizona, are realizing that their local tax dollars are feeding a federal surveillance web they never opted into. Critics from the ACLU point out that less than one percent of the millions of vehicles scanned are linked to any actual crime. That ratio paints a picture of mass, warrantless surveillance that operates in the shadows.
