Oxygen enters the ocean primarily through contact with the atmosphere and through photosynthesis by marine organisms such as phytoplankton and algae.
But oxygen is not distributed evenly.
Ocean currents move it.
Temperature affects how much oxygen seawater can hold.
Biological activity consumes it.
And changing ocean conditions can alter the delicate balance between oxygen entering the water and oxygen being used below the surface.
We begin at the surface and follow oxygen into the depths.
Cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warm water.

These measurements allow scientists to track changes that may be impossible to detect from the surface.
We also explore the oxygen minimum zones that naturally exist in parts of the deep ocean.
Marine organisms consume it.
And biological processes return nutrients and carbon to the environment.
Break one part of that system, and the consequences can travel far beyond the original location.
