He's in people's faces. This is how old I am. We've already talked about it with the whole count nickel thing. Yeah. And YouTube treb barely being alive. But I remember hating Doug Flutey. Hmm. I remember hating Doug Flutey. I had first used NBC and you didn't want to think that this USFL guy could come in and

7:22be as successful as he was because we were the sea. We were the best player of this league had seen since a Warren moon and then he went to Calgary and ripped our hearts out. And then he went to Toronto and ripped our hearts out and some breakups as well. Like, man, I hated Doug Flutey. It wasn't until after it was all said and done that I love Doug Flutey. Like I now I look back on those highlights and go what a gift he was. But in the moment, hated the man. I've got a bunch. I've got a bunch of Doug Flutey. I've got a box of Flutey flakes that is still full like never opened signed by Flutey. I can't believe you haven't had a moment weakness at like two or more. No, come home. I'm starving. 8:25So I became a big Flutey guy. I was a big Flutey guy when he was playing. I was a young kid at the time. The only, but he did, he did break my heart for a little bit because we know in person. Oh no. As a child, what did he do? We were staying. We went on a, I think I've told the way to be. Well, as a child, just grab your hand. Actually, it wasn't far off. Like the scene in old school at the birthday party or whatever. Yeah. He got trinked and just, Anyway, no, we were, we were on a road trip, a school trip. We were staying at University of Calgary. Okay. We went to like the zoo and the planetarium and stuff. It was when the Habs were playing in the Stanley Cup Final against the Kings. Okay. So we were all, all of us kids and I was obviously fully invested for that moment. It was 93 and we're all sitting there watching the heart attack kids.

9:26So I'm like, just turned, just turned 12. Yeah, they went 10 straight over to. Yeah. Anyway, we're all watching a few of this and stampeders were like doing training camp and they were all staying in the same dorms as us. So there were some stampeders who were like watching the game with us and we thought this was so cool. Doug Flutey walks in and makes a beeline straight to like the hallway where his room was and then the doors would lock before he go down the hallway. So I see it and me and my other friend were like, Mr. Flutey and we weren't running over and he saw us coming and then closed the door and walked away and I was just like, no. So then I was very angry at Doug Flutey, but then when he went down to play with the bills, as I was pulling for him so much to have success down there that I became a big Doug Flutey fan again. So this text comes in only second time they've ever texted it and says, Dusty, how many Flutey rookie cards do you have? The answer is I have one graded Flutey rookie card with the bears. I was going to say it was the bears. It was a bear's rookie wasn't he? Yeah. He also had a cup of coffee with new.

10:27Didn't he start with the Patriots and the Patriots were like, we can't have the Boston College kid on the team. I feel like there was something like that. I was, let's see. I remember he was, he was too successful. Like he was just one of those guys that coaches hated him because he was doing. I was doing. After she was knowing an after Chicago new England BC lines, Calgary stampedeers, Toronto organotes won the MOP six times in eight years in the Canadian football league. Then back down to the bills for three years, then the chargers then wrapped briefly with the Patriots again. Yeah. He threw for like six thousand yards. Yeah, it was like he was a freak. You know what's wild is that he's no longer in the top 10 passing and see him feel passing right. Like half guys have come along just because he wasn't here. Only played eight years. Yeah. So. All right, question number two. Who's the biggest villain in the NHL heading into this season? Fun game. Trev, feel free to chime in here.

11:29The biggest, the biggest. It's hard not to think that Connor hellbuck won't end up being the biggest fan. When he forces way out of small town, it's hard not to think that he won't be perceived as at least if you're a Jets fan as the biggest villain. But like as far as guys coming into your building, who you look at and you're like, I hate this guy. Oh, that's a good question. It's the NHL is actually lacking. Like Austin, I don't think Austin, I don't think the Leafs are relevant enough. Right. They'll be forced fed to us. Don't get me wrong. Right. I think the Leafs are relevant enough for us to say Austin Matthews is the biggest villain. My guess will be it will be the Kachuck brothers. Yeah. Probably Kachuck brothers. Is that what you're going to say John to punch now? You hated them before. They're going to be on the same line. Yeah. Like they're going to be just and success. Can I? They were annoying before. But so when they get going, that's my brother. Yeah. I know that's my brother. So yeah, that's why they're going to be for every second.

12:30Like if either one of Matthew or Brady's getting, you know, attacked or whatever, they're going to be in there just being there's definitely not a Chris pronger in today's NHL. Right. Like there is not a guy who has gone so cr... Like has crossed such a line that you're like, he shouldn't be playing anymore. He'll step on you. Yeah. Can I throw another option out there for you guys? Yeah. The Edmonton winners. Yeah. I think so. Right. You guys as far as a team. Yes. Yes. A team villain. I think the others be right. They bring in Babcock. Yeah. They make decisions that other people look at and go, this is ridiculous. You got your best. Toronto hates your best players paying for what? Eighth playing for like eight million dollars below market value. Yeah. Like the the oilers do live rent free in Maple East fans heads and medias heads as well. Yeah. Probably more so than media.

13:31I've never seen like an away media more obsessed with another franchise like Toronto media is with the oilers. Yeah, because they just they don't they want Conor McDavid. I know. I know. Like they are. Well, there's probably not care about Edmonton. Yes. They didn't have that's right. If Edmonton didn't have Conor McDavid. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's funny. That's funny. Question number three from coach Mike. Um, there's a non sport question movie slash TV show that you love. But most people think is just okay. Just just okay. What's the show that you love that people thinks just okay? It's okay. I mean, I got a few like I think quantum leaps like one of the greatest television shows of all time. That's got a strong cult following. Yeah. If you haven't missed a one that I really like shows because they do develop a cult following. Right. I always really liked the shield. I mean, I want to have this big thing because he's a big the wire guy. Okay. And I was a big brother sucker for a long time. A lot of people hate that show. I haven't watched it in the last couple years too busy.

14:32But there's a couple of like Apple TV shows that I'm quite behind that most people are like, yeah, pleuribus. Yep. Well, people love pleuribus. Yeah. I watched pleuribus and I didn't I know some people like this is the greatest show. I'm like, I liked it. Yeah. But I was like, yeah. I don't need four more seasons of pleuribus. Yeah. Like there's a show on Apple TV that no one watches called sugar. That is really weird and really good. Really? But it's it's so weird that like no one can really get attached to it. Right? Like it's yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's a couple out there. I mean, I'm a I'm a twin peaks and northern exposure to the peaks to the day I die type of person. Yeah. But those are such cult shows. Twin peaks has a massive cult following. Exactly. Traveling about you, buddy, what's show do you like? There's got to be a hilarious answer here. Yeah. I was thinking I was like, I like I'm a big game of Thrones guy. But most people like that same with breaking bad. Like I like those those kind of shows and I was just thinking.

15:35It's like that. And then I was like, uh, can you verse spending? That's probably what can you verse? You know, the cult following show, right? Yeah. It'd be like, if I was super into modern family and everyone else was like, I get it. I love modern family. Yeah. I get it. It's fun. It's a fun show and tie modern family. But no one is actually like, that's the greatest show I've ever seen. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Every time I've showed a friend, like, all right, you got to watch this episode of Candy versus spinning. Oh, yeah. So I'm usually just in the corner, like laughing, like, laughing. We are lacking in television comedies now. And that was just like too uncomfortable of a show for me. Yeah. They're just like, I don't know. It's a lot of much. I'm like, no, it's great. You're a love it. Watching two guys who are supposed to be friends just a few. Yeah, that was pretty vicious. I like the one show I like. If you want a good comedy nowadays, tires with Shane Gillis and Netflix hilarious. Yeah, very good. Makes sometimes you'll be like, oh, should I be laughing at that? But it's it's funny.

16:35It's well, but that's kind of it's a very funny show. That's all of Shane Gillis. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You watch Shane Gillis and you're like, I probably shouldn't think that's as funny as it is, but guys are so charming. You find the show's brilliant. Actually, you and Shane Gillis have got a similar sort of like, like, ability fact. Well, I think he crosses more lines than I do, phrase. Absolutely. He does. But there's a like ability to both of you that is similar. Well, thank you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. Like, if you had a show about you working in a tire shop, I wouldn't miss it. It would be hilarious. Yeah. The premise would be funny. The stories would be hilarious. In fact, watching tires does remind me a lot of you and at save on foods. No, you're best like who's who's who's who's in love with you? You're best boom. Boom. Boom. Yeah. I came up a couple weeks ago. Like you you and boom is basically that is the two guys on tires. It's the other guy and I would be so jealous. Absolutely. That's true. That is my boom. Yeah. But the casting that shows very good. They're all perfect for what they are.

17:36His dad has been a bunch of other shows. That guy is hilarious. Yes, he is. Yeah. Ever since it in wings. He was in was he in wings? Yeah. Anyway, that's a that's a pretty funny show. But you have any other good comedies out there right now. Let's know though. There's not a if that's really the only funny television show I want to say. Well, the sitcoms kind of now kind of gone the wayside. Yeah. Oh, it's pretty good. All right. 780 218 99 99 is where you can chime in. Like they are just they are all in on giving Connor everything he asks for in whatever way they can accommodate it. Right. So I guess what I'm saying is just like own that. Just be like, we are the big bad guys in the sky. We don't care what you think. We've got the biggest baddest player in league. I kind of feel like that's part of the bad cock situation is that that's a leadership group that understands that they're there. They're everybody's villain. So let's lean into it because the only the thing that they are lacking is that regular season where they walk around and kind of rub people's faces. Yeah, they don't have that one yet, right?

19:38They don't have the one hundred and twenty two point. We win the division. We win the president. I'm not saying you have to win. No, no, no, but I'm saying, but they want to go. They want to go tape to tape as a sure thing, right? Where it's every other team that has to deal with them coming in on Tuesday night and making it look silly out there. I try to play on this one. I think there's two types of team villains in the league. I look at the Florida Panthers and the Vegas Golden Knights. I have them in one category. They're villains because they go out and trade deadline. They find a way. They find a way. You know, they're with the LTIR. They took advantage of that. And then they won. They won. And they bullied those teams, all the things that you just listed. I feel like for the Oilers though, they've kind of done it in all the wrong ways. They haven't won. They've made, you know, the people that they've acquired have been, you know, you're kind of like, is that good?

20:39Is that good for the team? So I mean, they're there villain, but not the villain that I want them to. Yeah. It's like for all the wrong reasons. I want to be nice if they had a couple guys on the roster that fit the villain. Yeah. I actually come in and hurt you. I actually do have a villain. And I think this is a league wide villain. And it's the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes. Tom Dunedin. Yeah. Because he put his whole family in the gap. And he put them first as well. Right. It's not even like they're at the bottom after the player. They come in before the players start getting listed. Like when you're a villain in your own organization, there's a biggest heel move that you can do in a sport like hockey in the National Hockey League, the way that the Stanley Cup is revered in its like separate from the league itself. I know you're on the west coast I don't know if you get up early regularly or if we're waking you up today Kev but how are you doing? I'm doing okay Dustin. It's we're out here fishing so you know fishermen like to get up early. How's the how's the fishing been going you're holding some big ones or what? Yeah it's been great actually we've caught a little bit of everything a couple nice spring yesterday and and coho lots of prawns lots of crab meat.

28:22It's you know Canada is such an amazing country but this west coast of British Columbia is just really a summed up. Behold the beautiful out there I have two sisters that live in Victoria. It's nice getting out there and just checking out the west coast. All right well we appreciate the time today. Thanks again back to me yesterday. I thought you'd be a good guy to speak on the legacy that Mr. Nichol's had in this community. What was your first into when was your first interactions with him? When did that start? When did that relationship begin? I got to know Cal a little bit in the 80s when he was open up a series of retail gas stations gas land across Alberta and Northern Alberta primarily I guess. And Glenn Anderson was was Cal's good buddy and spokesperson for those gas lines. So I had the good fortune of traveling with those guys a few times up to you know different places in Northern Alberta. So that was my first interaction with him and then wasn't really till Cal and the IG took over the

29:28orders in the late 90s where I was fortunate for you know Cal and and his really good friend and associate Bruce Pennet came to our house when Glenn say there was leaving to ask me to become general manager and and began a great relationship really sad to hear the news. You know and I'm sure a lot of people will talk about this to us but but really needs to be remembered is if it wasn't for Cal and lots of other people to think as well because there was 38 of them but really Cal was the the force behind all that to keep the others in town. So no Rogers place you know no Edmonton Oilers likely no Conor McDavid. So you know what are fans all over half-calon Nichols to thank for that. You came back to the city as a player to finish out your your career in 97 and that was right when the

30:30drama yeah maybe this team leaving town heading to Houston. What was that like as a player in the dressing room to go through that sort of experience and very quickly like you retire you become an assistant coach head coach and before you know you're a general manager with this ownership group. Did it feel did it feel like it was a slow sort of role or was everything done in a flash like how do you remember that? Well I remember it sort of just being not I don't want to say how I planted but I certainly you know spent my career playing you know anticipating and and positioning myself to sort of be in those places but the question about in the dressing room I can't you know there wasn't as much social media of course there wasn't as much news on it all other than you know okay they're gonna stay they're not gonna stay but I never felt there we're gonna leave Edmonton but at the end

31:35the day found out how close it potentially could have been because that I believe it was a 60 day window where a lowly anybody had a chance to to step up with the relocation number which was well it was 110 million Canadian but it was 75 million US and that literally went down the 11th hour but I had a lot of so much respect for Cal in fact in the mid 90s when I was player rep or early 90s I guess it was and then we you know there was a number of of labor relation issues with the NHL which led to the you know the cancellation of the season 0405 but Cal sent me a pretty wordy letter which which I really respected I mean I was a little offended by it but coming from him and knowing him that it was basically saying you know listen you know you hockey players need to realize you know it's a two-way street here if it's not for ownership to to put this league out there you know how

32:39you guys gonna make the salaries you do and and I never forgot that of course when he came a call in in early 2000 after Glenn say they're decided to leave to go to New York yeah we our friendship began at that point a patchical forge was president of the hot of the business of the orders I was running the hockey and with Cal you know we did our best you know like amazingly when the NHL finally did lock out a 0405 the New York Rangers had a payroll of 95 million dollars and I think we were at 36 million at the time so something needed something needed to change drastically you know it's it's funny because we were we were talking about well you mentioned the 38 people that he brought together this as this group I mean first of all you only do that with insane amount of dedication great work ethic but he must have been a very influential person as well right how do he convince 38 people to get on board yeah he um I mean you're hit

34:45uh but he he and didn't really want anyone to know but he thought it was important the order stayed in town and they were great stories and all I mean again a lot of that most of that happens because the type of person Cal was uh you know so when you when you take him when he he chats with you you become general manager how stable was the organization at that time we're dialing it back like almost 25 years now with with him and that group in place it and you and Patrick involved you guys feeling pretty good that it was going to be stable here for a long time or was it a little bit still fly by the senior pants well we had we made the playoffs back to back years uh I want to say uh 90s well anyways we made we we those are the years we played Dallas all the time you know it was always really one once but they were a great playoffs and and you know the team always showed a lot of heart but but we knew as things went along so safe from 2000 you know a couple three four years later I mean really that that lockout that entire season lost

35:54the orders are really the poster child of of that whole argument because Edmonton was an amazing hockey city with a great legacy but just couldn't afford to be in the game uh if there wasn't any cost certainty and you know it it it it it it was interesting there was not a lot of I have to say a lot of the other bigger market owners that really had too much sympathy for Edmonton but again I know Gary Bettman gets you know chastise quite a bit publicly but I don't think it Edmonton too much because anyone who was around in those days realized that that lockout really was about the Edmonton owners well phrase you pointed it out earlier that from a national hockey league perspective right now the oethers bringing more revenue than anybody uh like the entire league must be thinking you know with the passing of calendars that thank god this guy kept this team here because now it's kind of become one of the flagship franchises in the entire national

36:55hockey and and you know again you know full credit to Cal so they sold in 08 so basically 10 years and I know Cal well enough that and have these conversations that really felt that someone needed to take it to the next level and you know although there was an appetite with the iG to to to to continue to own the team you know with 38 people the longer you go perhaps the the more mucky would get and so it was Cal sort of led the way to to make the deal with Darrell Cates and of course well known that Darrell right away stepped up and negotiated with the city to get that new building and and that nailed being old you know remind people I'm sure listeners to your show or sports fans so that they don't mind the building but for people that were against it it's a facility for everybody I mean the oethers play there what 50 times a year and there's
