The man in waiting, potential per-tremor ship coach, just any series, he said he's not going to a corporate box or whatever just there for a look but pretty excited about what's ahead for him. But the vibe in the city in totality extraordinary. My house was full of young likes 20-year-old guys drinking the Moses this morning. Did you have one? I didn't have one, I'll have one shortly. But yeah, my son invited some mates around at the last moment so it is champagne orange juice. It's all happening and living in Richmond the vibe is extraordinary. It's bigger than Grand Final Day. Yeah. It started earlier. Yeah. I want to talk about this in the scope of the pod today because if you look at it

2:06in terms of the relevance to the AFL, well obviously they've lucked out this year with both of the finals this weekend. By the way, there are finals on being interstate. So this deal, it's three games over four years at the Vic government has committed to. Well, it's two with an optional third but you'd think after all the hype they'd be crazy not to take up that option. 10 to 15 mil per game. They've reportedly shelled out for a $300 million return. Estimated return to Victoria of $300 million. The conversations with the AFL are ongoing about whether or not they can fit in a game next year because of course the fixture's being pushed back a bit with the the test that's coming out here in March. So everything's going to start a little bit later. Even if you're not an NFL fan and I'm a casual fan I would say if it's going to bring in $300 million does the AFL need to find a way to just say it will make it work? Yeah, they do because the momentum's here now. We can't just say have a year off next year. This is rolling and I can see it continuing. There's been talk of

3:06obviously the game moving to a Thursday morning which would be the first game of the season for an FL which could give more time for a turnaround. The AFL very, very lucky that there's no games of footy here in Melbourne. I still can't see in a possible way that they could have got one up but I think the AFL just have to roll with this. I mean in the way the state's going at the moment of Melbourne we need every bit of positive week. We need to catch and we need the cash and the vibe around Melbourne's huge at the moment. It's great PR. I mean you've got all the journey. Some of these journals on X have become celebrities a bit like that guy during the racing carnival. It's become huge. We just need the cash. So it's not going to be popular with Victorians if Andrew Dylan and the AFL say hang on. We can't do it this year. So I think it has to happen next season. They have to find a way and they will test it after the game immediately. They'll go into the mode of trying to get the stadium back to AFL quality as soon as possible. So a trial run but just getting that paint out of the surface is going to be huge. Now I'm no expert on paint but apparently Laura it's a

4:09totally different level to putting paint down for AFL games. It's embedded almost into the center of the earth. It goes that deep into the soil. The amount of paint. So it's going to take a long time to get off and I think even for... They're going to have to replace some turf as well. So it's going to be a big job to even get up for the prelim finals. Yeah so they basically get the test run as you said which is good because they can see how quickly they can make it AFL quality. So if there's a world in which they need to make this happen for next year final at Marvel Stadium. Well if it's bulldogs it'd be great. Like if it's at home team or St Kilda they should get that anyway in a normal competition. Now I know a lot of fans in the AFL will be like absolutely not when you think about capacity and money and everything but if there were a situation where the Victorian state government said we will give you a cut of this revenue that we make from having this game here so commercially it will be worth your while you're not going to lose any money. I know the traditionalist will say a final at Marvel Stadium but if that's the way to make

5:09this happen do you think we should go that way? Yeah definitely and it's happened before I mean buddy in that historical final for Hawthorne had the game of his life in a final against Adelaide. So it's happened at Marvel before we drifted away from it you know there's no guarantee that they're all going to be 80 and 90,000 games anyway. So we've got a role with this we've got to use Marvel if we can and you know we've got to embrace this NFL experience and you know I've just got some messages through it's going to be expensive though 1750 for a hard rated can you know the passion fruit hard rated. Is that one of your faves? I do do that the 40 my sun tells me they're normally 15 so we're paying US dollars it's going to be expensive but just the vibes huge and we need it in this state we've been a bit flat for a while. Yeah but is there a 40 final on tonight? That's the thing Steve I like this and the trade talk which we'll get to in a second has I think sort of taken over oh that's right there's a game it's also because it's in the West but just one final thing on this for me the NFL commissioner who's out here who's been singing the praises of this Melbourne

6:11experiment has then started to talk about strengthening the commercial partnership with Australia. What opportunities does this open for the AFL in the US for example further to what we've already done with scouting? Yeah we need to have a look at it obviously to find the right ground is difficult over there but it's easier for the NRL obviously to go over there but we need to try things there's no doubt and the PR we're getting from an Aussie rules perspective that's going back towards the west coast of the US we've got to milk that we've got to run with it there's no doubt and I think there's probably better doing that than in India to be honest and I'm not sure how that's going to go it's still happening Laura the Indian experiment. It appears to be but I would express I would argue you need to find a way to leverage this in the US for for our advantage because there'd be a lot of Australians who would go over to US to watch AFL I would have thought not to mention the Australians that are currently living there anyway all right we're sort of in a grants on that one they'll be interested to hear what people think so Jesse Hogan to Collingwood confirming he'll be at the Magpires next year so finishing up at GWS is he the fit they

Potentially but I still think Collingwood are going to go backwards before they come forward again like he's 32 he's going to be playing with McStay and members almost dad's army still as far as key forwards so they haven't really generated too much there as far as youth you've got Bula and West not quite ready as key forwards Jesse Hogan's been injured basically for two years but at his best he's a superstar but he said sort of those foot injuries it had all types of ailments yeah I think it's worth a throw at the stumps it's a little bit confusing at the moment because potentially he's a delisted free agent and Collingwood could get him for nothing but now GWS is saying we'll work with Collingwood on a trade so I think what it'll be Laura is a steak knives trade they'll throw in a late pick you'll end up at Collingwood and why not it's worth a go for the pies of course they bring in locky Neil as well some more experience he helps but just after the way the the match panned out against the dogs and just looking at the list I'm not sure

8:16they've got the youth to surge forward any further than they are at the moment they probably need to go back I mean they've lost your side bottom obviously Pendles has gone although I think Pendles was running out of puff anyway one of the guys who thinks that Pendles will struggle obviously to play out those two years at the Sons the way he was going with the injuries and I would say Laura that Tom Libretore was in better form at the end of his career than Pendles Tom Libretore had 33 touches in his last game I think Libbert could have had a couple more years so I'm not really on the Pendles bandwagon as a player I think he'll be good as a coach but I think Pendles to be honest is limp to the line and hasn't got a lot left and I saw that he had a meeting with Petraca in Tura I could have a cafe yesterday so that's the positive yep it keeps everyone happy it's a fresh look and potentially could be the next coach of the Sons so if we look at they've been pretty active already the pies they do listed six players obviously Jeremy Howe was the one that did

9:20win a contract in the end gets another deal I think that's warranted I think of the three older players that were in the conversation he's the one that was standing up more obviously Bobby Hill also potted ways with the club I mean he hadn't been playing for a while but but out of his best he was an electric player to watch and Jordan to go is the other one where I don't think he'll go but there has been discussion about him exploring options he's out of contract at the end of next year linked to Tazzy what do you think all happened with Jordy yeah I think he'll stay for this year I think they need him I thought he was a bit quiet in that final which was a surprise I think he's just a superstar player they can't afford to lose him but the issue is of course they can get something for him now before the free agency sort of kicks in but I think he'll stay at Collingwood but I look at the pies and as I said I just think it's going to be a tough period for them I mean McCray can't continue just to weave this magic all the time I tend to just hang around don't it hard to put away as we saw in that wild card for all but I think it's going to be tough for the pies this is Dave Roberts if you're heading into summer without a medical

13:32and talk it's just become so huge that it's bigger than 40 itself and the messaging I'm getting constantly from bulldog people about Zack butters is just in overdrive through X and private messaging and that's all the people want to know and I've been told that you know supporters would have preferred butters than to win a final I'm just thinking as trade and play a movement become bigger than the game itself well as you mentioned there's a final on tonight in the west and I think perhaps because it's in the west again it's not in Melbourne so it's it's not as much under the microscope but the trade talk is is an absolute frenzy it's starting earlier people are getting into it I mean that you mentioned Zack butters I saw a rumor doing the rounds on Facebook yesterday that he was a deal at the dogs and they've been talking about how it was a done deal now I haven't been able to confirm that but it's just once the rumor mill starts and people get invested and they get excited it's almost like you set yourself up if a disappointment I think a lot of

14:36these players these marquee players looking to sign deals or trade clubs they wait to see what happens with other players on the list so they wait to see in the case of the Bulldogs you know obviously Tom Libertore is retired Adam Trelaw's retired they're holding on to Buku Karmes they've given him a five-year deal are ID Jones is the other one that you know looks like he's going to stay and in terms of the Bulldogs I think the other player is is the Ruck is team English because Zack butters will be looking at that situation and going who's with me in the middle who's the player that's going to be giving me that supply so I can do what I do yeah I hear you looking in English is a great tap Ruckman which he has been even in the last couple of games it was just around the ground where he let himself down so look I'm more bullish about butters now and I was a week ago I've just been talking to people yesterday and that a bit up and about so we just have to wait and see I'm only concerned is why is he waiting I think he's probably waiting for English surely he knows but only concern is easy waiting for Jolong to go out or Toby Green to make a small

15:36green so part of the mail is to that Toby Green's waiting on butters if butters goes to Jolong Toby will follow him to Jolong if butters doesn't go to Jolong Toby might stay put there is so much at play here so the double deal butters and green to Jolong or nothing at all potentially so you've covered football for a very long time what's the evolution of trade that you have seen over the years you've done 40 because it just seems to have gotten to this point where we are now talking about this throughout the year yeah what's great for the podcast like this 40 fix we're going to be talking about this in coming weeks in the old days at the herald son we would get through the grand final and then switch to trade and it be two weeks I remember some trade periods there might be six or seven trades we're all sitting around thinking all this is a waste of time now it just starts so early the talk there's more leaks there's more transparency as to who might go where contract links and now publicize it's just become huge as I said it has more clicks than anything else on websites

16:40podcasts it's bigger than the game itself it's great for the AFL and it then rolls right through towards spring carnival and racing but the downside is we don't talk about the finals like we used to we don't sort of preview and think about who might play on who and what's the permutations of that or we could spend about trade which is that's just the way it is trade will continue to take over and the AFL's probably happy with that but from a purest point of view Laura should we be talking more about the 40 we can shall we talk about the game tonight Jolong and Frio let's let's finish on that I'm worried for Frio are you worried for Frio I think they'll get rolled tonight they'll get rolled yep they'll get rolled but when I look at Frio's finals record it's very poor under long you remember as a bulldog fan the dogs were up by seven goals in the final over there to just before half time and that was the only win that they've had since then they went out in straight sets last year and of

17:43course this year you know terrible start so I think they're wobbly at the back end and Jolong is so hard and they look good on paper so I think the cats can get it done particularly if they start well so I tip Frio earlier in the week with Jimmy Bartel but I regret that tip and my tips have not been great all year so I agree with you I think the cats can get it done and then what that sets up a Hawthorne Jolong Prelim no Hawthorne Brisbane Hawthorne Brisbane that's right and then Jolong Sydney that's also a good match considering what the swans have done on the way yeah so you know I saw Mitch on the train he looks confident and I've said all year and I'll say it again here on 40 fix I think Hawthorne will win the flag so I just think that'd be huge and I'm on the Hawks big time I think they can beat Brisbane in a pre-limp and yeah just tonight I'm just looking at the bottom end of Frio's list and it just looks wobbly to me I can't see Vos and these guys getting it done under pressure in a final some of the maybe bottom five or six was Jolong with with Scott and the way they go about it I just think they're gonna be two
