The Myth of Common Sense (3)

We have all heard the phrase, 'It’s just common sense.' It is a snappy comeback in an argument, a political rallying cry, and a frequent complaint about the state of the world today. But what if I told you that the thing we call common sense doesn't actually exist in the way we think it does? Aristotle once saw it as a grand bridge connecting our five senses into a single understanding of reality. Later, Thomas Paine used it as a bedrock for democracy. But in our modern world, it has become something much more elusive. If you look closely, common sense is really just a hodge-podge of sayings and personal experiences that we hold dear, even when they contradict each other.
