A June 1, 1998 car accident on Slide Mountain, near Reno, Nev., led to the death of Rinette Riella Bergna and left the driver, Rinette’s husband Peter, with only minor injuries. Bergna, who said he loved his wife despite marital difficulties, claimed that he had struggled to control the vehicle and remembered nothing of the accident.
