Brilliant. By the time that ship docks, she has completely charmed him and negotiated a contract for $500 a week. A huge increase. Mayer changes her name to Haiti Lamar, partly to distance her from the ecstasy scandal, naming her after the silent film star Barbara Lamar. And he immediately starts marketing her to the American public as the world's most beautiful woman. And the marketing strategy worked flawlessly. She achieves massive Hollywood success, starring in Algiers in 1938, Boom Town with Clark Gable in 1940, and later her biggest hit, the religious epic Samson and Delilah in 1949. Massive hits. But if we connect this to the bigger picture, the studio system was incredibly restrictive. Her image was strictly curated. You really have to wonder about the psychological whiplash there.
