high number. It's staggering. But for that population, that exact same can of bug spray is being melted down, crystallized, and injected directly into their veins. Today, we are looking at a single, deeply unsettling document, detailing a phenomenon that exists on the extreme, invisible edge of alternative substance abuse. It's a practice known as wasp dope. Right. And our mission for this deep dive is to really understand the mechanics of this practice. We're going to break down the improvised street chemistry, the devastating biological mechanisms of what happens when a human consumes insecticide. And the hidden four decade long history behind it, which is maybe the most surprising part. Totally. Okay, let's unpack this. What exactly is wasp dope? Well, wasp dope, which is also known by street names like wasping, wasp meth, shock dope, hot shots. Wait, hot shots. Yeah, hot shots, Katie, Katie, or zombie.

Zombie. Wow. It basically involves the deliberate ingestion of common household wasp and hornet sprays. And the active ingredients we are focusing on in these commercial sprays are a class of chemicals called pyrothroids. Okay, pyrothroids. Right. These are synthetic compounds, and they're actually modeled after natural insecticidal chemicals found in chrysanthemum flowers. Oh, really? Chrysanthemum. Yeah, but these are specifically formulated in a lab to attack an insect's nervous system. And people are using these sprays either in combination with or as a direct substitute for highly addictive illicit substances that cause euphoria. Mainly meth. Right. Exactly. Primarily methamphetamine or crack cocaine. That is just a staggering reality to confront right out of the gate. We are talking about long distance aerosol bug spray. Yeah. And the guys can filled with liquid solvents, propellants, and a synthetic neurotoxin. You can't just consume that directly out of the nostril. No, definitely not. So the immediate mechanical hurdle here is physical chemistry. How does someone take a commercial aerosol product and convert it into something that can

be smoked or injected? What requires an improvised and highly dangerous manipulation of the chemical solution? There's a specific case report out of Texas that actually outlines the primary method used to alter the state of the bug spray. Okay. How do they do it? So an individual takes the liquid insecticide and sprays it continuously onto a highly heated surface. Like a stove. Like a hot plate or a muted piece of metal, yeah. And when the liquid hits that extreme heat, the volatile components within the spray, specifically the aerosol propellants and the liquid solvent carriers, they rapidly evaporate or flash off. Right. Because they boil at a lower temperature. Exactly. The active chemicals, the pyrethroids, have a much higher boiling point. So as the solvent disappears, the pyrethroids precipitate out of the solution and crystallize into this solid crust on the hot surface. Unbelievable. And then this resulting material is scraped up to be inhaled, smoked, or sometimes dissolved into water and injected intravenously.

See, the street level terminology often refers to this process as purifying the drug. But looking at the physical chemistry, that is a complete illusion. Oh, completely. Just like making a purified compound and more like boiling a pot of dirty ocean water until all the liquid evaporates. Yeah. And you're just left with the salt. Right. A hard, concentrated crust of salt and pollutants. Applying heat doesn't make the bug poison any safer or remove the neurotoxin, it simply condenses it. You are stripping away the water and the propellants, leaving an incredibly dense, concentrated dose of the exact chemical designed to shut down a nervous system. What's fascinating here is how this improvised chemistry demonstrates a highly functional, albeit completely destructive, application of physical principles, brute force chemistry. Right. The individuals doing this are utilizing evaporation and crystallization to bypass the intended delivery mechanism of a commercial product. They're isolating the active compound to deliver it more efficiently into their own

bloodstream. And from the source material, it's not just smoking and injecting. No. The administration don't stop there at all. We see documentation of huffing, snorting, drinking, plugging, and vaping literally any way possible. Any conceivable route to bypass the body's external barriers and introduce this concentrated pyrethroid into the blood is being utilized. So if this streak chemistry is successfully condensing these pyrethroids into a dense crystal and people are finding every possible way to introduce it into their bloodstream, what happens when that massive concentrated dose hits human biology? It's bad. The body must immediately recognize it as a severe poison. Right. It does. Yeah. And the biological response is a profound systemic emergency. To understand the symptoms, you have to look at how pyrethroids actually function on a cellular level. Okay. These synthetic chemicals target something called voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells. Voltage-gated sodium channels. Right. Normally, these channels open and close in fractions of a second to allow electrical signals

to pass down a nerve. That is how your brain tells your muscles to move or how you feel a sensation. Okay. That makes sense. But pyrethroids bind to these channels and force them to stay locked in the open position. Oh, wow. So it's essentially like a stuck doorbell. The electrical signal just keeps firing continuously, uncontrollably, without any way for the nervous system to reset itself. That is an excellent way to visualize it. Because the nerves are firing continuously, the resulting symptoms are severe neurological chaos. What does that actually look like for the person? The documented physiological effects start with erratic behavior, extreme nausea, agonizing headaches, and a severe burning sensation in the throat. That's just the start. Yeah. As the continuous nerve firing overwhelms the central nervous system, it escalates to intense redness and inflammation of the extremities, auditory hallucinations, violence convulsions, and eventually the brain simply cannot sustain the electrical storm. The patient drops into a coma, suffers irreversible neurological damage, or dies.

That explains the systemic neurological collapse. But there is a specific localized medical report from July 2000 that documents what happens at the actual injection site. Yes. It was published in the Journal of Hand Surgery, which immediately tells you that the localized tissue damage is catastrophic enough to require specialized surgical intervention.
