Thanks for jumping on sports 1440 this morning. Really appreciate it. Thanks for having me back, Kevin. Pleasure to be here. Holy smokes. I mean, to see the joy on Matt Dunstone's face yesterday, that was something else just to see the road that he's traveled and been so close in so many big events. But that was just unbelievable to see his emotions coming out after that win last night.

2:04Yeah, I think we've kind of said in curling for a while that winner lose, Matt Dunstone's going to be emotional. He's gotten a bit of a reputation for being greatly affected, visibly by what is going on. But yeah, the first time in a while we've seen him on the happy side of things. And yeah, they had a fantastic week. And I think for a lot of curling fans and for people who are inside the game like myself, really just thrilled for him. They're a team that works so hard they deserve it. And it was just a fantastic display of curling and of emotion once they got to hoist the tanker yesterday. And I mean, the field that he had to get through the path, I mean, when you're beating, you know, Brad Gushu, the arguably the greatest curler of all time, you're beating an Olympic gold medalist. And then Kevin Kuhi was lights out. I mean, the field that he had to go through here, that's as tough as it's going to get. Yeah, I think when you look at the historical thing,

3:06like you said, you know, gives you obviously one of the best ever, Kuhi, one of the best ever. I think that's true. I do think in some ways, you know, we're not seeing Kuhi and Gushu at the height of their career, you know, coming into the event. Kevin Kuhi ranked 27 in the world. Brad Gushu ranked 33. They're getting Brad Jacobs off of about three days rest from the Olympics. So on paper, I think that's certainly the case. And as you said, Kevin Kuhi, my god, it was like, he turned back the clock this week. I don't know what, I don't know what happened. I don't know if he got a magic potion or something, but he was unbelievable. And I'm not saying gunstone wasn't full value for the win. But I do think that, you know, kind of a cool story. It's almost like a passing of the torch, if you will, right? He kind of beats all that sort of top guys that are older than him to get that briar title. It's a great story. So when you mentioned Kevin Kuhi like that, and how well he curled all the way up to the final, was it just one of those nights where he was just off in his teammates

4:11and his rank was, they're just a tiny little bit off than what they were curling at the level. They were curling all week long here. I think it was a tale of two things, Kevin. I think it was that for sure. I do think, yeah, they had gone undefeated through the field. It was their third time playing Matt Dunstone. They had beat him twice already. Obviously, Matt Dunstone, one of the top teams in the world, the law of averages sort of dictates that he's going to win a game eventually. I think Kevin, you know, probably won the wrong games against Matt Dunstone, but I also thought Matt was just very good. I think he had his best game of the week in the final yesterday. He put a lot more pressure on Kevin than he had earlier in the week when they met in the one two game and in the round robin. So yeah, I think it was a combo of Kevin just didn't quite have that miracle hero shot that he had earlier in the week and it just looked like Matt Dunstone came ready to play and they had their best game of the week. Well, let's get to all the changes that are, you know, staring everyone in the face here. And let's start with Dunstone with EJ Hardin saying that, you know, he's going to

5:13hang up the broom and where do they move from here in the sense as a replacement on the front end there? It is an excellent question, Kevin. I think it's going to be on the minds of curling fans for the next couple of weeks. I think now that the briars over, you're going to see the announcements coming fast and furious. I think if there was an outside chance that Ryan Hardin was going to join his brother in retirement, I think that's out the window now. They're going to have a buy back to the briar next year. You have to keep three of your players from this lineup to do that. So I would imagine that locks Ryan Hardin into lead. So it's just a case of they're looking for a second. We saw Jay Corgan sort of conspicuously as their fifth this week in St. John. So is that a fit? We do know that the Horgan brothers have left John Eppings team. So perhaps that's a little bit of gamesmanship from Dunstone or trying to fit a puzzle piece in for next year. I think we're going to see some other teams near the top break up.

6:15Like Mike McEwen, for example, they didn't have a great briar is Colton Flash. A guy that fits into that lineup, you know, great sweeper, really good hitter. I could see him as a second there. So those to me are maybe the top two options that I think Matt would have, but obviously you win the briar. You've got a buy back to the briar as team Canada. It's going to be a position that a lot of curlers in Canada would cover. Yeah, of course. And both that, John Colton with us in sports 1440. So just stick with the final then with Kevin Cooey. And like you said, he's 51. I don't know if he can go for another four year cycle. And that's how most rinks kind of approach this. But what do you think to future lies for Kevin Cooey? Well, it was interesting. You know, he was asked about that a bunch this week. Of course, as we knew, as we know, Brad Gouge, you stepping away, EJ Harden stepping away. I think retirement was on the brain for a lot of the reporters. And Kevin kind of said a couple things that I thought were interesting. He sort of said, I don't think I'm going to go another four years,

7:16but he didn't say he wasn't going to go next year. But he did also say that if he retires, he's just going to quietly disappear. And he's not going to go for the, you know, the fan there. And I'm going to announce it six months before I retire or whatever. That's just not Kevin's style. He doesn't like, you know, being in the spotlight like that. But I think Kevin, after you see him play this week, he's got to go at least another year. And I had heard even before this briar, you know, I hear a lot of things in the back channels of curling. I had heard he was actively looking to put together a team for next year. So I think you couple that with the fact that he just had one of the best weeks of his life at this briar. Kevin Coulee, we're going to see him next year at the very minimum. And he says he's not going to the next Olympics. But I wouldn't put anything past him at this point. Yeah. But the thing that's sort of, for me, like listening to Brad, but then not hearing much from from from Nichols, to me, I'm going okay. So as where's he at? And then does Brendan Bocher, you know, he skipped for a long, long time. How do you think that's going to kind of play out here? I think for Mark Nichols, I think the reason why you haven't heard a ton is because I think if he gets the right opportunity, he won't walk away. But that said, I always go back to Lisa Weagle was a great player for a long time. And she played with Rachel Holman. And then

10:24she went from playing with Rachel Holman to Jennifer Jones. And I remember at the beginning of the last quad, I kind of said, you know, I asked her, what are you, what are you thinking? And she said, well, I've played for two of the best skips of all time. So I'm, I'm not going to go play for some 35th ranked skipping Ontario just for the sake of playing. And I kind of feel like that's where Mark Nichols would be at as well, that I don't think he's just going to play with a low ranked team for the sake of playing. But if he got the right offer, my impression is that I haven't spoken to Mark, but my impression is that that's why he hasn't said anything is I think he would play if given the opportunity. And as for Brendan Botcher, I think Edmonton curling fans should probably gear up for him returning to the skip position. I, I believe he's going to put a team together. I think the geographical like flying out to St. John's all the time to practice with Brad Guzhu. Don't know how much he loved that. So I think he's trying to get players to come play with him and Edmonton. And I do think the Oregon brothers are also on that list. So I mentioned Jake

11:26Oregon as maybe a fit for Dunstone, but I could also see the Oregon brothers going there as well. I think that would be a really great young team. So yeah, I do expect Brendan Botcher to go back to skipping. And I think he'll have a great team. Speaking of young teams, Jaden King out of Ontario really had a really fine briars. Would you say that that team is the best young team in men's curling? I, I think they're in that conversation for sure. Yeah, they've gotten themselves up to number 16 in the world. I think we're, when we say curling, we mean Canadian curling because I do think there are very, very good young teams elsewhere in the world. You know, Danny Casper from the USA, who we just saw at the Olympics Ross White from Scotland. But when it comes to Canadian curling, yeah, I think Jaden King sort of in that pocket with his fellow Ontarian Sam Moibruck, who I think is a very good young player. Also, Braden Calvert, who we saw, he's not as young as Jaden. Jaden's 23 and Braden is pushing 30. But still, when we think of curling, you know, I mean, that's, that's still a relatively young guy

12:27in the game. So yeah, I'm not ready to crown Jaden as like the next great hope for Canadian curling because I do think there are some good young curlers that are coming up right now. But he's absolutely in that conversation as being a guy that we're going to see at many, many more briars after this one. Who would you say is the best young women's team in curling in Canada? Yeah. Yeah, I would say it's got to be, it's, it's, it's a pretty close race between a couple three named skips and Serena Gray withers and Taylor resans in. But based on age, I would probably give it to Serena Gray withers at this point. She's also an Edmonton product or whole team curls out of the Savile Center there in Edmonton. They're all still eligible for U-25 events. So Taylor resans since team, they're just a little bit older than that. But yeah, they're really coming up. They're actually in Japan right now to play in the Karazawa International, which is a prestigious bond spiel. You have to get invited to go to. And yeah, I think they're one of Canada's

13:28best young teams from everything I've heard. They're sticking together for next year as well. So yeah, definitely looking at them as, as a team that will, will make some noise. And Kevin, they were 0.5 points away from being in the Scottish. So they missed that wildcard to Katelyn Laws by 0.5 points. So they're, they're right in the mix and they're a great young team. What do you make of the field for this event, John? Yeah, it's a, it's a bit of an interesting and I would say fun field. We're going to see a lot of new faces. None of the teams that were on the women's podium at the Olympics will be there. So as we know, Rachel Holman was not allowed to play in the Scottish because of the proximity to the Olympics. So Carrie Anderson won that. She'll be representing Canada. Xenia Schwoller from Switzerland, defeated Sylvanateer and Zoni, the sort of incumbent

14:30many, many times Swiss champions. So she'll be representing Switzerland. And then Anna Hasselborg, the Olympic gold medalist, actually didn't have a great year on tour. And Isabella Rana, their sort of main competition out of Sweden will be at this world championship. So it's an interesting field, Kevin. I mean, we're going to see some teams that were there at the Olympics. You know, Wang Ruay from China, who's very good. But yeah, the USA is also sending their probably third best women's team. So I'm excited. Like I know that fans love to see a world championship with all the big names in there. But you're going to see some young talent that's on the rise, that's very impressive. And I don't know that there's like necessarily a clear favorite. So it's going to be very exciting to watch in Calgary. And it starts like in four days. So where there's no rest for us in an Olympic year, Kevin. Exactly. How do you think, curling Canada handled the whole Rachel Homan thing about the Scotties here? Yeah, it's it's tricky, right? I had Emma miss you on on broom brothers,

15:34team Rachel Homan second. And she kind of laid it all out there. But it's sort of a double-edged sword because yeah, obviously, and team Homan would agree. Like we don't we didn't want to play the Scotties a week before we have to leave for the Olympics. Like I think everybody agrees on that part of it. However, could you move the Scotties elsewhere on the calendar? I think is what everybody is kind of asking. And you know, curling Canada's justification has kind of been well. If we do that, then we might get in the way of some grand slams, the provincial playdowns might have to go earlier, whatever. But I also think, you know, the Scotties is the big event on the calendar for Canadian teams. I think in some ways, given, you know, the displeasure that team Homan has sort of vocalized with this, you know, I kind of feel like they just have to find a way to sort of bully their way on to a spot in the calendar that makes sense for everybody, because as Emma outlined, if you let the men's team play the briar, how do you not let the women's
