When you cast your vote, you expect the person you chose to be the one calling the shots. But what if the real steering wheel of the country is located somewhere else entirely? We are talking about an invisible architecture of influence—a permanent state that stays in power whether your party wins or loses. It is not just about politicians anymore; it is about a shift in power from elected legislative bodies to federal agencies that never appear on a ballot. Consider the Federal Register. In the 1960s, it was about 20,000 pages of regulations. Today, that number has ballooned to over 80,000 pages annually. This is the expansion of administrative law, where unelected experts, not representatives, create the rules that govern daily life. This transition has led to what economists call regulatory capture, where the agencies meant to watch over industries end up being run by the very people they are supposed to regulate. This is often called the revolving door.
