The Integrity Gap_ Why We Say One Thing and Do Another

About this episode

Have you ever dealt with someone who promises you the world but delivers nothing, or someone who claims to value kindness yet acts with cold indifference? It is one of the most frustrating experiences in human relationships. This disconnect is what psychologists call cognitive dissonance. It is that nagging feeling of mental discomfort we experience when our actions do not match our values. When we find ourselves acting in ways that clash with what we say we believe, our brains scramble to fix the discomfort. We rationalize, we deny, or we tweak our beliefs just enough so that we can sleep better at night. We tell ourselves that we only acted that way because of a stressful situation, or that our actions weren't as bad as they seemed. It is a defense mechanism that helps us maintain a consistent self-image even when our behavior tells a different story.
