Companies like Nokia, Samsung, Omdox, and Ericsson are all pushing these specialized agents that can handle everything from spotting that were problems, to fixing them automatically. They're promising huge jumps in efficiency, like 50 to 80% and talking about fully automated networks. But here's the catch, and it's a big one. The real risk isn't the AI model itself. Those can be swapped out. The problem is the underlying system that manages these agents, how they register, how they communicate, and which ones get permission to touch the live network. This is the new operational support system, or OSS, and if you picked the wrong one, you're locked in, just like with older telecom software. Think about it. Operators are already used to juggling different AI models.
What they don't have is a standard way to define what an agent actually is in a real-world telecom setup. A useful agent isn't just a chatbot. It needs to be a control tool with specific tasks, understand telecom language, know the network's context, and follow strict rules. Without this, each vendor's agent library becomes its own separate language. Right now, Nokia's agents don't talk to Samsung's, and Amdox agents don't easily connect with Ericsson's. This forces the telecom companies to become the integration experts all over again, which is exactly what they were trying to avoid. Vendors are pushing these pre-built libraries because operators are buying autonomous networks as a package deal, and these libraries are the quickest way to show a working demo. The real issue is that if companies treat these agent libraries as just another feature from their existing network vendor, they'll end up with four. Incompatible systems by, say, 2026. This isn't just about interfaces, it's about migrating years of operational knowledge.
True interoperability is key to avoiding another monopoly forming right under everyone's noses.
