The Hardline- concerns about Texas Tech heading into the season

0:00So this one, we all knew this was coming down the pike. I don't think I really knew when, but there is a documentary that is going to be out here very, very soon concerning Texas Tech titled the program. It premieres tomorrow on Paramount Plus if you have that outlet. And it's exactly what you think. It's a behind the scenes look at Tech and Hardnockie. I guess I'm sure it is. You know, they're all kind of the same. It'll be close-ups of sprinklers and lines being laid out on the field. Maybe some blocking sleds. Indeed. Maybe some red dirt music backing it all up. But basket full of footballs. It's really. That's some oil pumping in the oil. Oh my God. Yes. It's going crazy. So a lot of it has to do with apparently or maybe it's just an episode. I'm not really sure.

1:01Has to deal with Brendan Soresby. And I guess that he sat down and so it's it's four episodes and it says the fourth and final episode includes a sit down interview, film near Dallas after Soresby left the program. Two months ago. So first on camera interview that he's given. Thanks. So. And he said the following. I couldn't watch sporting activities without wanting to have something at stake. Wanting to have some skin in the game. Whenever I got to tech, it was the same deal. Making more money than I ever made in my life. I have no reason to gamble. And yet I still did it. And reports are he was making five million. They cut him a five million dollar check to show up there. Play. Just I'm not familiar with this is is that a lot for like a college student. Mm. I'm glad you asked that.

2:03Yes. Okay. Yes. It's more money than you could possibly can you fathom at that age. It's a lot for a grown ass adult. I know. Yeah. Let's say a 20 year old. Do you think you'd have your video game squared away if you had five million dollars in college? Brilliant. Do you think you have the sweetest gaming chair? Oh my gosh. Just love our support for days. Do you think that you would be going to donate plasma as much as you did? No. I definitely would not be eating saltines and baked beans. Dude. But his problem was the games weren't interesting enough to him. No. He says I was making more money than I ever made in my life. No reason to gamble. He still did just chasing a dopamine hit. And that's where you lose yourself. Eminem. I'm walking around the facility and nobody knows that I have a problem gambling. And once I got found out and got caught, I went to rehab to fix my problem. And here we are. Funny part is it also this coming out coincides with the NCAA ruling that University of Cincinnati

3:11has their free and clear of all this now. Someone in the NCAA launched an investigation on SINCE and it's like, no, you're good. Yeah. Forget it. Not your fault. But I guess it's better than like what the NBA did because the NBA with with Kauai, this would have been like, sores be you're good. We're going after tech. Yeah. We're going after Cincinnati. For sure. At least they went after sores be. So he entered a 30 day rehab facility. As they say in the doc, to treat his gambling addiction. That's when he admitted to wagering 90,000 on 9,000 bets. Does he got you DJ on number of bets, even though you're 12 years older? It's close. You're definitely not doing a, a hundo a pop though. No, I'm not sitting on 5 million. It's pretty hard. It's pretty hard to get to 9,000 bets that just using the will Chamberlain, do you realize how big that number actually is?

4:11There's only so many games a day right that on right. He says I was on the phone with my parents and agent and I'm sitting there bawling my eyes out. In my head, I'm thinking I just threw everything I've worked for my entire life out the window like it's all over. So at least he knows which he arguably did. I mean, let's be honest. I don't want to say the normal NFL contract because that's wrong. But if you are a QB1 and you do get that second contract, the rough estimate would be five for 250. So a quarter of a billion dollars perhaps was fumbled with this very poor decision-making. Yeah, because he was not approved for the famously as he applied for the supplemental draft and then the NFL is like, no, no, just because you applied doesn't mean that you're in. So now he's having to wait until the draft in the spring and he's trying to work out and

5:16rebuild his reputation and probably have some pro days leading up to it. But who knows if any team will touch it. Right. It, you know, maybe a late round draft pick. Yeah. Somebody will take a flyer probably just because quarterbacks are such short supply. And he is good. You know, he's good. I don't know how it all translates to the NFL, but he was a really, really good college quarterback. So then they, they, they pan, they said they pan to McGuire and Joey talking about telling his players in a team meeting that we are the most hated team in the country. I love it. We're now the hunted. We're laying Kiffin so mad. I know. I know. Well, this is before all that. Yeah. Which again, it was the same question that we had when all this was going on with tech. Why are you doing this? Why are you? And they were blindsided, granted. They had no idea. None that any of this was going on. And then it's like, but then you lean into the heel turn. Yes. Then you lean into it. And why? Why do you have to do that?

6:17And then you make your fan base, by the way, then the Cody Campbell stuff. Well, yeah, we'll get to that. Well, I'm saying though that there are people in the periphery that then become like the face or the voice of your program. And they kind of love being famous. That's their dopamine is, oh my gosh, reporters are calling me to hear what I think. I'm being quoted in this doc about what it is. What football is doing, but you made your fan base look like fools because they were all back and whatever is sold, we're buying it, right? And we're going to get this done and la la la. And this is the right. Okay. So if you're going to, you're telling me that with all your draft kings and fan dual spots at the NFL's running that what's the difference, man? It's just like, dude, you sound so stupid right now because of your tribalism and the way your dug in and it's all going to blow up. No, it's not idiot. And then it all blew up like a week later and then Cody Campbell. He's quoted this saying, looking back on it.

7:19And this is in the documentary. I know that Texas Tech and I handled everything with integrity and we did things the right way. I think this is something that could have been handled pause. Go ahead. I'd like to review my case. I did and I found no wrong doing. I thought about it. Yeah. I really did deep dive into myself. I think this is something that could have been handled much more privately and we're not going to forget about that. And I don't think they'll forget about it either when we're up by 40 and still throwing the ball in the fourth quarter, that's where the retribution will come. So this is all I'm sorry. The retribution toward who? All the doubters all the haters. Wait, wait, wait. The big 12. Because it was just the conference though. I think sunny. Remember sunny popped off a little bit.

8:19Yeah, but mainly it was just the conference saying you can't do this. Yeah. Well, every team in the conference voted. They all aligned with the conference saying no, he can't play. I don't care what a judge says. He can't play. So now it's just again, after decade, after decade, after decade, after decade of being a tech, just good old tech. You had a couple of years under leech that were fun. Suddenly, not only are you here, but you are hated when you were just tech. And I guess every tech fan would tell you, I'll take this. Yeah. Yeah. And, and you know what? I bet you LSU fans are saying they would take it as well. And it's from the Jerry Jones School of that's right. No publicity is bad publicity. That's right. And in real time, it feels like you're going on a super exciting and enjoyable ride, especially

9:25to the top, if you're not used to sitting in that chair. And I'm not going to say every time because I'm sure there are exceptions, but most of the time you look back and say, what were we thinking? But in the moment, all you can sense are the haters and the relevance. And yes, you all confirm each other's biases by saying, you know what, they're just mad we're good. That's what this is. Yeah. And they're mad we're kicking their tail, 40 to nothing. And when you lean into the heel turn and you, you accept being the villain, then you can basically justify any behavior. Right. I guess that's true, but you just don't need it. What do you know? I do know the Joey is not that guy. He's like the nicest guy in the world. And that's his problem here. If I may, I like him a lot. He's welcome on the show any time. But he's not the face of that program.

10:26The guy that we just quoted Cody Campbell is the face of that program because he's the guy with the money and they have fed that monster and made him bigger. And of course, standing there in the Trump White House probably doesn't hurt his ego, you know, self view of his stature. And I'm sure the, the, the oil business has been good to him and all these things. And so once and, and dude, Texas has seen this in the past. And I'm has seen this in the past like this is a tale as old as time as when, when your money guys, when you're big boosters, when you're benefactors, however you want to describe it, when they start to take the face of the program over, it's bad. And that's when, and when they're, your coach and your AD need to kind of throw elbows

11:27around and, and kind of get the podium back. But obviously the problem there is often big money booster guy can actually get you fired. Yeah. Because when they are the face of the program, they wield the most power. Yes. And so it's, I always think of the episode of the sopranos where the guy had the sporting good store until he lost a couple of anthropocards. And now the sopranos are actually running your sporting good store and they're actually destroying it. And there's nothing you can do about it because you owe them money. And, and once you are beholden to guys like this, and I know Cody played football once. And I know, you know, that, that he's not completely unqualified to have a seat at the table, but his seat at the table is his checkbook and his political connections. And he cannot wait to give another piece of bulletin board material to the press to because again, it's really cool.

12:28I'm sure for an oil guy to suddenly be famous about football. This is the dream man. Yeah. And so yeah, round and round we go. But I would say detect fans enjoy the ride and joy having a really good football team. But obviously, if you could see from the outside, how upside down this feels to neutrals and then understand almost all of us are neutrals. We don't hate Texas tech. I like them. We like Texas tech. We really like your coach. And it's just it's a weird relationship right now with with the neutrals because honestly the face of your program is a dude who has nothing to do with the program except money. It's weird.
