The Glowing Ocean That Satellites Can See From Space
About this episode
The ocean can sometimes glow so brightly that satellites can see it from hundreds of miles above Earth.
At night, enormous areas of the sea can appear to shimmer with an eerie blue-green light.
This isn't science fiction.
It's bioluminescence.
The Glowing Ocean That Satellites Can See From Space explores the fascinating organisms responsible for some of the ocean's most spectacular nighttime displays—and how modern satellites can detect these events from orbit.
Tiny marine organisms called dinoflagellates can produce light through a chemical reaction inside their cells. When waves, boats, or other disturbances move through the water, these microscopic organisms can flash with brilliant blue light.
Under the right conditions, enormous concentrations of these organisms can create glowing stretches of ocean.
From the surface, the effect can look almost otherworldly.
Waves can break into glowing streaks.
A boat can leave a luminous trail behind it.
And in some rare events, huge sections of coastal water can become visibly illuminated at night.
The phenomenon can become so extensive that scientists can detect it using satellite instruments designed to observe very faint light.
One particularly remarkable example is the phenomenon sometimes called a "milky sea," where vast areas of ocean can appear to glow continuously rather than producing individual flashes.
Scientists are still working to understand exactly how these enormous glowing regions form and what ecological conditions create them.
Satellites provide a unique perspective because they can reveal patterns across areas far too large to monitor from ships alone.
Researchers can then combine satellite observations with ocean measurements, biological sampling, weather information, and other data to investigate what is happening below the surface.
The ocean may look completely dark from above.
But sometimes, hidden within that darkness, billions of microscopic organisms are producing light.
And from orbit, an entire glowing ocean can become visible.
