But while the inauguration of the Renaissance dam was seen as a triumph by many Ethiopians, it sparked fresh backlash from downstream Egypt and Sudan, with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al Sisi denouncing Ethiopia’s inauguration ceremony as unilateralism and stressing that Egypt would take “all necessary measures to protect its interests and water security.”
