Welcome to Thursday. This is the best seat in the house only on W.I. Day and I'm your host Luke Near We're talking college football galore today, but also I want to lead with some Virginia men's basketball scheduling talk Because at log last we have the full schedule non-conference and league play all patched together so we can all start planning our winters out That's gonna be my first item on the agenda tonight chapel faller of the state is also gonna join me He's on the Clemson beat and just the other day in the Clemson week two press conference Debo Swini Getting after him on a question asked about the roster construction I'm not gonna dive too deep into that which apple I just want to learn about more Clemson angles What do they go from here is this worst case scenario for the 2020 six season I'd say yes no quarterback play The talent has depreciated across the board for the Tigers at a lot of position groups
So we're gonna get into all of those angles on the best seat in the house. So stay tuned ladies and gentlemen That's what's on tap for tonight's program What's hilarious is I'm trying to pull up Virginia men's basketball's schedule because we have it in its entirety at long last now I got a glimpse of the schedule Just because I've got people in the business So I knew Virginia was playing Duke on the final big Monday of the season Indoor him and I told you that the other night on the show I also knew they were opening up with Clemson oddly enough At little John Coliseum on December the 29th and then I also knew About the back-to-back Trip From Miami to North Carolina where that's gonna be a Saturday Tuesday swing Which is probably one of the toughest swings on the schedule But I'm gonna give you the rest of the schedule. I'm gonna point out What I've really been thinking about for I know to my company as they go through not only a
Challenging non-conference but ACC play as well And I've got to pull that up on my phone now because I am computerless at the moment because technology is not cooperating You know, I blame it on Two-step authentication. That's really what are the beans of society right now? I could go on and on about that. Maybe I'll include that into my summer series in 2000s 27 if I make it that long on earth I hope I do along with buckies and the savanna bananas and Disney adults three things I will never understand Okay, finally the computer's back so I won't have to do this on my phone I don't need any more time with my phone I talked to you about this yesterday about how much I have to scroll through College football press conferences and I have started to get in a pattern of Monotony scrolling through Dabo and then scrolling to Lane and then going to who else? Kyle winning him I shared some with you. He was one of the stories of the weekend and how badly Michigan played
That's one of the reasons why Oklahoma's my lock of the weekend if you would have say oh, I don't know You're walking into a trap. I will gladly walk into that trap if Michigan somehow keeps this one really close Good for them. I don't think it's gonna happen though. So we shall see I will take the more talented offensive line defensive line skill position players the better quarterback and The coaching matchup well, I don't know. It could be a coin flip since waiting him might be In retirement mode, maybe he wasn't in retirement mode and then Michigan came calling Vittables is younger. He's hungrier. Anyway, I'm not gonna get into that I'm gonna talk for Tegy beds basketball because I've got the schedule pulled up in front of me at long last All right on the 29th of December It is a trip to Clemson I really want this game for a few reasons ACC openers that tasted my mouth after losing the Virginia Tech game in Blacksburg last year Was really bad and then I started to panic thinking oh no
We're gonna be out of dogs at NC state if we lose this gave you your own two that's a terrible start You're almost certainly out of the title race because I knew Duke was only gonna lose maybe Two games the entire season and guess what that's exactly what happened to the Duke Blue Devils They did not run the table, but they came darn close by only losing to North Carolina I think Duke is going to be superb again I have them in my top five in the preseason I have them rated actually higher than last year not saying they're gonna be better than last year's team I'm just saying and comparison to the rest of the packing ordering college basketball. That's why early losses can really sink you in the current state of the ACC So that Clemson game you win at little John Where Virginia has had so much success and mainly that was a totally better versus Brad Braddowell thing Tony just had Brad's number as much as he loved him to death I mean, I remember being in the hallways underneath John Paul Jones being a post press conference and Tony going over to Brad and
Just you know hugging him and giving him like a long Message of how much he admires this program Midwestern guys there was certain a bond between those two which Really was different than Tony's relationships with other ACC coaches and I would say he admired Brad Brinnell more than any other of his Opponents which is hilarious because he absolutely owned Clemson in his time at Virginia, but that's the first one on December the 29th Then we turn the page into the new year SMU comes to town I'm not scared of infielding his guys. That should be a win and then we get the West Coast trip The first time ride o'em gets to go out to Stanford and then to Berkeley so it's Cal and Stanford not in that order though. It's gonna be Playing Stanford on January the 6th and then on the 9th It is a matchup with the Cal Golden Bears in Berkeley I went on this trip last year. I have a feel for it. It was in reverse order. We were Berkeley then Stanford for the women's trip
It is fun to get away, but I also wasn't doing homework like the students were so I Know these guys don't have treacherous class schedules. Let's be honest They know how to order their schedule To do the bare minimum and when I say that I'm talking about Classes that are not necessarily going to be gut punches in season, okay? Now some of them will certainly stack up real classes in the summer But in season that's when you want to take the lightest load and they have academic advisors helping them and creating or you know collaborating on their academic schedules so I Think the Cal trip is Perfectly planted in the season You're not going out there When you're completely exhausted Say in late February you're going out in early January
Or there's still fervor for the beginning of conference play. I actually like where that lands on the schedule I'd rather have it in the early portion of January than late in the season That's when sleepy spots can really rise especially February mid February late February that is when Bad teams can come bite you So I actually like having this trip earlier on in the campaign and guess what Stanford and Cal are not gonna be good this year in men's basketball I will say that's with authority and guess what the next opponent is Boston College so you come home and get Boston College after that it also has been dreadful and Will at least be 15 point underdogs against Virginia at JPJ so even if you're sleepy on the trip home Four days later guess what you get Boston College that's a gift Then it gets difficult at Miami at North Carolina the toughest stretch. I think we're two game stretch on the schedule
Now there's a chance Virginia could be favored in both of these games but this is a Stretch in the schedule where I'm looking at hmm if they're gonna slip up I could see one coming here and when I say one I'm talking about a loss and if you want to win a title and that's what all the guys are talking about and whether that's an ACC title in the regular season which still counts I count those I treasure those I Think that more fans should appreciate those We have those years that Tony Bennett claimed the ACC regular season title in 2014 in 2015 in 2018 in 2019 They are hanging from John Paul Jones or a not those years are listed on a banner they matter And they matter also to ride a note of an discreet team who is mentioned in the summer and To where we are right now late summer I guess about how they want to win something they didn't win anything last year They came in second in the league they were runner up in the ACC tournament and then they got bounced in the round of 32 so
Can you win a Title and if you're gonna do that it's gonna be either the regular season the ACC tournament or maybe you would a region And make a photo for that's called winning something So if you're gonna win something it's gonna be challenging and you can't drop random games because guess what Duke is not gonna be dropping random games and I mentioned this to a variety of fans last year and there's this Old school dogmatic way of thinking of oh you can't really worry about a loss in early January or a couple of losses Well, you know what that's gonna get you out of the title race and I told people immediately after the Virginia Tech game Or you can kiss goodbye the regular season and Folks saying oh that's pretty much sure Luke Duke's gonna drop games guess what they didn't drop games plural They didn't they dropped one so Don't slip up if you want to win the ACC regular season
Maybe you have one game where you slip up and Then you probably split with Duke so they need at least one game to slip up as well and Then it comes down to a lot of weird diebreakers, but let me continue After that top stretch at Miami at Carolina your home for Georgia Tech your home for Virginia Tech at Syracuse Duke Saturday in Charlottesville John Paul Jones Rita hopefully at night I believe that should be a marquee 6.30 six o'clock matchup I'm praying it is Then we go at pits Notre Dame Louisville at home. I like that at Virginia Tech. That's a sneaky tough stretch That's a Monday game against Louisville at home. So Saturday Monday turned around I do like that advantage of being at home on big Monday and Then a trip to Virginia Tech Eight days later so you get a buy after that big Monday giving its Louisville and then Florida states
And then at Duke for the final big Monday of the season NC State is the finale at JPJ That's the schedule those are my thoughts that's Cavalier men's basketball talk on the best seat in the house so to review If you want to win the ACC regular season title which all these guys have been talking about in the off season We want to win something you cannot have slip ups Because Duke is not going to have them they might have won they might have to but they're not gonna have several It is not going to happen Mark my words so To quote Friday that lights a little bit can you be perfect? They're gonna almost need to be perfect If they win a win that regular season title that's the reality. This is the best seat in the house We'll get into chapel faller next. He's gonna join to talk Clemson the ACC and more college footballs next We're talking college football on the best seat in the house Welcome back to the flagship station for the Virginia sports video that we're brought to by Applebee's eating good in the neighborhood I'm your host is always Luke near glad to be back on the line with chapel faller who writes for the state covering Clemson
And also the rest of the ACC that's where we're gonna flow into after a little bit of a recap of what happened in Death Valley this past weekend So what's welcome back into the show chapel planning to get into great to have you back good evening Good evening. I had a great time in Baton, Marusion happy to be here and talk about it That was a bit of a snooze are there at the end But still still lots to take away from a 5110 result a lot more than people might realize You have to say it's worst case scenario for Clemson heading into that game expectations What we thought about potential changes questions with both coordinators I'd say worst case scenario What stood out to you the most in person because you were covering the action in Baton, which well first all I think Clemson's own head coach would agree with you because dabbo use those words himself worst case scenario So I think a lot of us you me and him are all in agreement on that being there watching it probably just the The non competitive nature of the game
About midway through the second quarter and onward I Did they Clemson had a few early chances that have they capitalized on maybe this court doesn't look as bad But I don't think anybody in that stadium after watching about a quarter and a half of that game could take away anything but you know at this moment right now it doesn't mean it can't change but right now these programs are pretty far apart I would agree in terms of on field talent the speed the physicality just The way that the rushing lanes were so wide open and how LSU's receivers were I mean one guy called a Ball and it felt like he backtrack for four yards and turned out the sidelight and still beat everybody for a touchdown They just a little looked a little overmatched and that's a really good LSU team I think will be very good this year I think they definitely passed the I test Sam Levitt in person is sick to watch I love watching him play But there's a gap between Clemson and schools like that and that's kind of what they're Dilly with the kind of sitting with right now. Okay, here's my take-home Clemson and in the suburb
I was trying to figure out where to peg them in the ACC peckie goater and I kept going back to this thought of mine Hey, they've had a quarterback issue for two cycles dating back to DJU and then Intakeed club Nick who was pretty hit or miss. I know they made the playoff two years ago with that team So I kept going back to that thought the problem is This is the worst quarterback situation. I think since Davos took over At least on the surface watching Vizini in that game now I know there's room for improvement and we'll see about Tate Reddell's if there's gonna be split time with this Competition is gonna continue to play into the year But I think that might be the most serious concern because I always thought Clemson had quarterback issues the last two cycles But those have not been eradicated your thoughts Yeah, I'm interested to see how this weekend goes as well with another round of both quarterbacks plain I don't have probably the perfect historical perspective on every quarterback of Davos tenure
But it's definitely the most uncertain the position has been since I've been covering them which was my first year on the beat was DJ Use final season at Clemson as Kate was kind of chomping at the bit So I think they'll get clarity eventually My gut after seeing one game tells me that eventually at some point this year Tate Reynolds will kind of get put into that role just because he's younger. He's a little bit more dynamic And it makes sense to kind of give your roster clarity I appreciate it. Vizinas honesty on this point on Saturday and I've we talked about quarterbacks after the game Which I appreciate it comes to making those players available because they didn't have to do that But Vizini kind of said yet tough to get into a rhythm when you know that you're not exactly alternating series But when you know the other guys gonna play Every mistake you make is probably mentally magnifying your own head So I mean, it was a big gamble to stick with those two guys and not take a transfer I do think it's a sign that they're confident in Vizinas ability to you know not have to do too much and pitch the ball around and maybe against the
Team that's not LSU. It looks a little bit better But Reynolds is chomping at the bit and I don't think you go into the year with a senior and a freshman in an ongoing quarterback battle Unless you feel you know really good about the freshman or maybe not as solid in the senior so It's a it's a fun fun story every week to follow but I don't think it's the best for on field results as we saw And if it's a dead heat generally You're gonna go with the younger player who has higher upside when it's that close of heat so That's the way Adeline but geez Reynolds look dear in the headlines, which can certainly happen in that environment No doubt, but the one thing I Am tired about and this dates back to the offseason as well and all the critics came out of the wood works with this is Just the critique of Clemson about old utilizing the portal utilizing the portal. Well, you know what there's plenty of other blue chip programs out there Who don't Georgia doesn't okay? We never hear that about Kirby. Does anybody come slam Kirby after the Ole Miss loss? He didn't utilize the portal enough
You could say it about Ohio State And numerous other blue chip programs now the quality of player They're acquiring yeah that matters But if you don't have the war chest of some of those other schools. I just mentioned You're kind of out of luck and it's probably better to recruit from high school ranks. Would you agree with that? Yeah, I thought Eric McLean who does a great job. I had a really awesome podcast episode that I recommended And Clemson Fandalliston to where he kind of talked about You know, it's less a portal problem for Clemson and more in evaluation If you're going to be selective with who you bring in from a transfer portal perspective Which like you said is not uncommon in college football. There's a lot of teams that do that. They don't bring in 30 transfers every year. It's more like a high impact 10 to 15 If you're doing that the high school kids you're bringing in You need to really nail those evaluations. You need to find instant impact guys. You need to develop them quickly And Clemson is kind of in this weird spot where it's not exactly going all in on the portal
while at the same time If you want to look at things like high school recruiting rankings and and has dropped composite and everything It's not in the gutter, but it has dropped um and to be fair They've never been like the number one class that they've averaged Somewhere like in the teens most of debos career like high teens 11 to 15 range But within that class, you know, there's been dudes on dudes on dudes That level of five star talent is a lot more expensive though honestly And that makes it tougher for Clemson to get those guys So uh, I think those kind of confluence of factors show up on the field where You have some transfers maybe not as many transfers as some people would like And then the guys that you like that you've developed internally that you feel good about Maybe objectively on a field versus other top talent Is good as you thought and that as Eric McLean said and I thought said very well Kind of comes back to the program when it comes to evaluation and and how do you make that point better Because again, if you're not going to go on on the portal You're going to stick to your guys and your guys aren't You know
Showing up on on a big stage Something needs to change Yeah, Chapel Fowler's my guest on the program. We're talking at ACC football specifically Clemson after a really rough opener against ls you We'll see if they were spot. We'll see if they can get their act together When ACC play arise, but a few more notes that I would get to The one critique that I will agree with. I'm not one of the guys who loves to slam their portal stance Which is seems to be the low hanging fruit and most people thought even know what they're talking about as far as how many Transverse came in how many went out how many other schools are getting like I just mentioned is the Georgia Corollary The two teams had the same number of transfers actually I think Georgia had eight compared to Clemson with nine. So I just like to bus those myths the one I will buy into is the coordinators and the loyalty factor And I think everybody when they saw Chad Morris was back
Had this demeanor of oh no What is this could look like is he gonna run the same stuff even though the game has certainly evolved since he was around with Taj boy And then even the Allen stuff on the defensive side of the ball You got to have some questions after that opening showing That it could be the exact same Caliber of defense that we saw last year right Yeah coordinators a huge huge thing for Clemson uh they really Well, they didn't get exactly lucky because they paid the guys well, but I mean how many head coaching jobs Ventables Tony L.A. and Jeff Scott turned down before they eventually left for those jobs right They had an almost unheard of run of hey, we have like really awesome coordinators and they're sticking around And now they're kind of Going through the churn that I think a lot of programs go through I mean there's a lot of good teams out there that go through Accordinated every one or two years Yeah, it's hard to find those guys at the very top and if they're good they usually leave to go somewhere else And they thought that Riley was going to be a game-miss type of a guy, but he didn't turn out
Yeah, so that's that is why I do understand that Chad Morris higher from a perspective of Hey, you went out and got a big name. I've said this many times you and I got a big name in Garrett Riley Everybody loved it For a lot of reasons some of which I think we're rallies fault some of which we're not rallies fault um It didn't consistently produce the product you wanted so to go back to something you're familiar with I understand from Davos perspective But if an offense looks as poor as it did on Saturday night You're getting a lot of questions and criticism for that higher Mac of Chad Morris who hasn't called plays in six years Chapel fellers my guest on the best seat in the house. That's a lot on Clemson when we return we're going to hit the rest of the ACC Who else is going to show up in that title game? I think most of us are leaning Miami is on the track and That track probably won't be derailed unless there are significant injuries, but who else in the ACC competes Is there a list of Four teams five teams how deep do we go with that? It's all decks to the best seat in the house
Welcome back to the flagship station for the Virginia Sports Radio network W.I.A You're listening to the best seat in the house and I'm your host Luke Mir or presented today by Apple Lee's and I'm talking college football Specifically ACC football with chapel faller follow his stuff on the state if you want insights into the Clemson Tigers We went in depth on Clemsons opening loss to ls u in dramatic fashion 51 to 10 now we're going to hit the rest of the league How many teams can show up in Charlotte legitimately as having a chance and when I say that it's Pretty clear Boston College in Stanford and the drags of the league don't have a chance I don't care what their schedule is but in your mind if you're trying to pick the upper echelon after Miami I'm not even including Miami What are the first Four teams that come to mind for you at least Yeah, I pulled up the standings to refresh myself on this
I think you've got to put Louisville right up there after how they looked against Ole Miss. I know they lost the game and one week is just one week but Their new quarterback look good The transfers they brought in it was just a very competitive dynamic program I thought You know Louisville probably spends less money on its football roster than Clemson But they looked a heck of a lot better than Clemson did in week one So I put them up at the top. I know that you know the big game issue with Jeff Brahm has been a thing there and they've been Kind of knocking at the door for a while, but you know they've appeared in a title game They have a really good ACC record the last three or four years. It's just as good if not better than Clemson So I put Louisville at the top of that list. This is probably a little Reasonsy bias SMU for Jennings alone. I know that a quarterback doesn't make a team But I think we saw him Monday night. Just what type of guy he is how dynamic he can be You probably saw the ups and downs a little bit too because he got some killer interceptions Yeah game, but the end result was a win and he's played a lot of winning football You know, that's another team that could have been in the ACC title game last year was in the ACC title game two years ago
Right to see if P mix. I think last season awesome coach So I put those twos up top and I mean I enjoyed Virginia's NC State win. I'm not sure what it means because we don't know how good NC State's gonna be, but that was a good tough physical game from Tony L its group. So I like them Pits quarterback had a field day against a group of six teams. So we'll see how that goes And maybe Cal gets in there. I don't know. I'm gonna see JKS in person in a few weeks when Clemson plays in Berkeley So I'm excited to see him kind of wheel and deal But I'd say just off one week alone you gotta put SMU in Louisville up there and that's kind of what the pre-season predictions told us so yeah, I would go SMU Louisville Virginia And then I'm trying to figure out one more team But it may be Clemson. Maybe they're not dead yet. Yeah That's right. I mean, oh, and oh ACC records Exactly. Nothing has changed. Yeah, in that way years ago. They lost the Georgia And they're opener and they won the ACC. So can't write them off just yet and then maybe virgin detect
Maybe but their schedule is difficult, but at the same time I just don't think there's any Insurmountable date on any schedule besides from the Miami Hurricanes either coming to town or a team traveling to hard rock I really think there's not as much separation. I had SMU in tier number two by itself in the preseason I thought I you know Miami's tier one SMU's tier two and then tier three is the collection of Clemson Louisville and then maybe Virginia But I've changed. I just don't see the separation with SMU now when they play in Dallas I know they haven't lost a game in what three years But it's not as if they're blowing teams out of the water when they're on their home field at you know Gerald Ford stadium Yeah, it's funny It's gotta be such a tough job as a conference commissioner like you want a deep conference But then whenever the conference as people like to say you know self-canibalizes or you know the teams beat the teams that aren't supposed to lose Then your conference perception goes down. So it's like what's the perfect balance? I don't know
I know it's just like an objective observer of ACC football. I do like the fact that I can turn on Any random game at any game of a moment and maybe see a big competitive game seeing upset Maybe not the case with my Andy this year because I do think they're loaded Then again Stanford's pretty pretty poor Of a program. So maybe that's not the best comparison for how good mine is gonna be all year But yeah, you just you never know. I love covering it I love watching it because of that reason but at the same time I can see why that kind of hurts perception because As much as these teams want deep leagues with a lot of competitive bull bids Probably at the end of the day they want a few really good standout teams at the end of the day So that way they're you know positioning those teams for a CFP appearance and that's probably a bit of an issue for the ACC right now Yeah, especially super super top heavy or a little Not talking. Yeah, and if you're trying to be a two-bid league, which is the goal of the ACC Louisville needed to beat Ole Miss
And if that didn't happen, which obviously occurred they've got to be a one-loss team the rest of the way and I don't even know if that's gonna be enough if they get to the ACC title game as a ten and two football team in They lose to Miami is that enough? I don't even know and then second of all the problem with that some you It would probably be right up there is they go to South Bend So it's just a bad Non-conference schedule luckier. I think for the teams who were expected to get 10th and the SEC does look like it's deeper and Looks like it's much improved from the last few seasons So if there's gonna be another bid I'd expect it to go there or maybe the big 10 gets four and then Notre Dame comes in this year I know we're not gonna get to G five teams now G six teams anymore So if you're the big 12 and you're the ACC It's gonna take a lot or it's gonna take a lot of love from the committee Which I don't think will happen for the ACC after they didn't win some of these bell-weather games and Clemson looked terrible against Delas you
Yeah, it's such a good point about I mean you have these big marquee games of them If you pulled up Clemson schedule right now as of this moment they have One more ranked game out of 11 games remaining. I know and that's home against Miami probably the best team in the conference And it was like this last year too, you know they lose to ls u And then you kind of look at the schedule and you say okay If you're not gonna be the ACC title game like you basically have to be perfect from this by now It's such a unique situation And I don't know probably part of it is perception and there's a whole ESPN SEC stuff But last year was so much better because Florida states mode, D'Aloy, but last year right So at least there was one feather in the cap for the league But there's just nothing this year and no more opportunities unless S.F.U.s get a pull one of the all-time upsets in South Bend. I just don't see that happening Yeah, I don't either but yeah, it's it's not a good spot to be in if you're one of these ACC teams That's you know kind of chalping at the bit to be bid number two and you lose that big opener and you I mean it's September night right now. You look down and say okay, well, we need to basically
Not slip up at any point again this season or when the ACC title that that's a hard thing to ask of a team No matter how good you think climpson or Louisville or smu Might be like that. That's a tough that's a tough ask of a lot of people. So I'd imagine one bid will probably be the outcome certainly All right, Shappel Fowler. Thanks for carving out time with us on the best scene in the house I hope to do this again in about a month as we can keep doing checkpoints in the college football season and then obviously as far as ACC basketball Virginia opens up conference play with Clemson in late December on the 29th So maybe we'll get a few insights before December 29th, but definitely want to touch base Next month and keep talking about this season as we get a larger sample size actually in second thought Maybe I won't because Shappel I've got to ask Did you play football? No, I'm kidding plug anything that's happening at the state before we let you go Yeah, finally getting a climpson Virginia basketball game after we didn't get that matchup I know the first time since like World War II
Do you have any on my Twitter is at chappel fowler first name last name and all my contents at the state comms Last sports so you can find me there awesome stuff we'll be following along climpson certainly in the headlines This week we'll see how they responded what happens with the quarterback carousel and How they fare once ACC play five lay rives that's chappel fowler you're in the best scene in the house on w i.d This is college football talk of the best seat in the house welcome back to the show folks I am your host as always Luke near you can stream all the content allowed at cvo right now dot common your mobile devices as well if you download the app Mike Barber joyd speed right now he is the man over at cvo right now dot common We're gonna go into everything from his travels last weekend throughout the commonwealth Virginia was on by But there was other action of note then we will hit the Cavaliers briefly I had a Norfolk state and then to the rest of the ACC and beyond Mike good evening. Thanks for having me I would begin with either your trip to Harrisonburg or blackspurg
Whichever one you'd like to start was there was a marathon Saturday it was we'll go in chronological order How about that yeah, let's do it I enjoy days like this and I should say you know when I worked for the Richmond Times dispatch There were a number of Virginia Tech UVA double headers David teal who used to work with me we would often undertake them I think they're a good time This was even easier Luke because I didn't have to write a straight game story off either of them Neither was UVA that's the team I write about now so This was really about taking in the atmosphere and the vibe around two coaching debuts Billy Napier at J.M.U. James Franklin at Virginia Tech and like two guys who were tasked with different things like Billy Napier is being brought in After kind of flaming out of Florida to come back to the Sunbelt and keep J.M.U. as like the elite group of six program James Franklin is being tasked with really restoring Virginia Tech to what it once was so Look, they're both similar in that they both are coming after flaming out at football factories
You know Penn State and Florida are big-time football schools It didn't pan out for either guy although James Franklin wasn't wildly unsuccessfully just didn't make the city fun Yeah They're both launching relaunching themselves as they take over these commonwealth programs I have a question Both of these schools and it has nothing to do with the results on the field have J.M.U. fans gotten to the place Where going to football games is cultural and it's what they do and this is the third straight coach who seems as if he's going to keep it going Depending on how you feel about Napier who was really getting the Sunbelt when he was with the regic agents a while ago Yes, Sunbelt Billy but no, it's a great question and I have this amazing vantage because I started my career covering James Madison I actually would visit J.M.U. because I had friends there in college So I was there when there was nobody in the stands I remember the first time I visited Harrisonburg. I said to my friends. I was a Friday night. We were at a party
And at the end of the night we were eating some I think chanelos pizza and winding down and I was thinking like what time do we have to get up for football and they were like nobody goes to football games here And that was like 1999 Exactly to now where yes, I think Luke it is cultural that that's what Harrisonburg that's what students That's what people do at J.M.U. They still have room for growth because they leave early Right and a lot of school's deal with that, but they're still the you know We're up big on a conference opponent a halftime. We're gonna go Back to the tailgates or out to the bars whatever it is mainly what I'm saying is I Don't think it's a novelty anymore. Correct. I think it's more cultural. I think J.M.U fans spend their Saturdays at the games They traveled well look when that team was an FCS team and they were in the playoffs and in the national title games They're fans traveled their fans traveled for bowl game. So yeah, I think it is cultural now. I think They've done as good a job as any fan base of embracing what the move to FBS is
Right the move isn't you didn't go to the FBS to compete for the national championship anymore You need to embrace college football and what it is and Saturdays and maybe going to a bowl game And I think this fan base has done that as opposed to maybe being delusional and thinking Okay, now that we're here how long until we're in the college football play although they were in the college football Second of all I'd like to mention that empty stadiums in the fourth quarter is not a trend It's just happening in the Capitol if it's everywhere I mean even death Valley Empty doubt in the second half after LSU got a big o'clobs and so that's gonna continue I think in these blowout games So I'm more worried about initial attendance until we get into conference play when things get more competitive But let's move over to blackspurg They were doing their whole little jump it around thing on the entrance blah blah blah Lane did Empty doubt talking about the stadium not the other way empty doubt as well Because it was never gonna be a competition But what was the energy and what was the excitement level for Virginia Tech fans because the ones that I've talked to the few that I do have in my life
It's never we did that all out. I speak as if these are like aliens or Something foreign to me now, but over the last five years It's been a little bit of a morose Self-degraiding Vibe in the fan base. Did you sense any of that is shifted because if it has shifted then I can go back to hating Virginia Tech more than ever and despising their fans I would advise you to hate away because I think the fan base swagger is back Not because they beat VMI 73 to 3 there again not delusional. They understand that that is but the energy The orange out the excitement around James Franklin I think it's all there look I give Virginia Tech fans a lot of credit because Honestly, even the last six years of coach beamer like the program wasn't in a great place It wasn't competing really at a high level and Lane Stadium always sold out and Lane Stadium always rocked So I give them a lot of credit for that, but I think you're right that it it dabbled into Almost like it's my job to be at Lane Stadium and the guys down there aren't doing their job
The vibe Saturday night was very much a celebration. It was very much. This is our savior James Franklin's gonna get this thing back You know a couple block puns, you know or nice for the the beamer balls shout out call back, but Yeah, I think the energy in the swagger is back for tech fans. Well, that's good Then I can regather some of the worst hate that has got away and I think it's healthy This is what I say to all fans and if you look around the country Fan bases that do have those feelings have the most fun of course Yeah, and I think we're shaping up to have a well of a ballgame that last game because I think Virginia is gonna be Having the better season and be the better team. I think Virginia Tech is gonna be strong I think their back half of the schedule is brutal, but that's gonna be the thing that keeps them locked in and focused Tough to play in black spurg certainly for UVA, but for anybody. So I think the rivalry is gonna have some juice this year Are we sure anything's gonna be brutal in the ACC this year? That's where it goes. It's a relative term Luke brutal is relatively sure anything's gonna be it's like first world mountable. It's
It's gonna be like first world problems Right we talk about first world problems and other people in other parts of the globe are probably like what the so no Yeah, nothing is brutal in the ACC I can't think of one game that doesn't involve Miami For any team involved that's not winnable unless you're busted fall into the state I do have to put a few parameters of this okay for the middle and the upper Half I'm even talking about Louisville when I some you yeah, I don't think anything is vastly intimidating. I don't mean Dallas is not intimidating. It's not easy. It hasn't happened yet But I think this year it could happen. Oh, I think so too. I like I just don't think I mean I watched you know look again. We're all jumping to conclusions off of a game or two But I watched SMU Florida state and the two things I came away with number one which you and I already talked about It's hard to win in Tallahassee Right, that's a tough place to go play and two SMU isn't Some sort of jug or not. Those are the two takeaways from that game
Look, I give SMU credit for pulling it out. We've talked before about how first ball games can be dicey Yadayada, but the takeaways got to be SMU is not a world beater And it's kind of hard to play in Tallahassee, especially when the lights are out Yeah, my other takeaways are the ACC is a one-bid league That's what I've landed Can I tell you the only team Who I think could change that oddly enough? Are they local? Yeah, yeah, and I think that's the product of the schedule right I think if Virginia somehow and I don't think this is gonna happen Let me just state that if they magically Went on a run from last year and then they got to the title game with loss then sure I could see it But that's a tall order. I don't think SMU Look at it what they have they get a self-bend and now that really feels like a loss to me Not even a punchish chance game So they've got to run the table which is a little bit different than say some of the other teams that I mentioned I think Louisville now needs to
Run the table or maybe be a one-loss team Virginia needs to be a what-loss team those are the elicin areas because The SEC has too much this year. Mm-hmm. The big 10 has a lot as well Yeah, I agree and Look, you know Louisville's a funny story because I came away from the Louisville game Liking that football team more but liking their chances less Because they like it so I know and maybe some of that's not fair I think Louisville's really good, but no, I think you're right Look, I think it's going to be an uphill struggle I think the ACC has to bounce back in week two There's the Tennessee was a Georgia Tech Tennessee. There's a couple of games out there that are gonna help But they the ACC was shot itself in the foot in week one big time And that may be the thing that ultimately anchors them down when we're talking about can they get a second team in the playoffs? Mike Burbers by guess we're talking to Caledon football and the best seat in the house Last year we had the two G five representatives in the playoffs
We didn't have Notre Dame this year we get Notre Dame and most likely barring a catastrophe and that causes there to be one He was spot I don't think the big 12 will get two teams and I just don't think the ACC will either I think that extra bit is how they got to go to Another SEC team or maybe a fourth big 10 team. That's just where I've landed I mean, I think if you're trying to pick the best field that's fair and right Um the ACC had its chance right and it's it's kind of rough to say like well You've got these eight or nine non-conference chances to prove yourself against other power conference teams And then we're gonna judge you as a league based on that, but also that's all we have Right, I have to judge you on something. I have to sit across the table and have something to look at And what I have to look at is what you put on your resume and for the ACC It ain't good. I know and look at it the team sue are these supposed contenders for the second bid
SMU still has to get a Louisville. They'll be an underdog there They have a trip to Notre Dame. They'll be Double digit maybe 17 point underdogs and Notre Dame potentially if you're going on paper has a trip to SMU. They'll be underdogs They have Virginia Tech who knows where that game's gonna be But if you're looking on paper SMU Virginia those things that you just pointed out the opportunity is there for those teams to make the college football playoff Now you and I don't like the odds right now. That's a different thing Do I think SMU is going to beat Notre Dame? No, I don't but does SMU control its own destiny in that regard? Yes it does Right, there are games there are enough games on ACC schedules that will get you brownie points That the ACC can get a second team in the playoff the question is can they step up and win those games Whether it's big games in conference or non-conference Notre Dame like there's enough out there to get it done I just don't trust these teams to get it done is the second ACC team in Charlotte if we're assuming Miami is
The better way they better be at this point Does the second ACC team have what loss or two losses in conference play? I think there's a decent chance they have two. I think the ACC certainly hoping it's one Right that that's the stronger position The better chance they get a second team in but I think there's a very good. Look I think what we've seen is there are some good teams in the ACC There's only one great team in the ACC and good teams Can be beaten by other good teams like that's the there are a lot more coin tosses if you go look Boston colleges garbage They're really bad Stanford's really bad. They're bad football teams. Okay like that's But other than that like you're looking at teams that are good to Okay, like there's a big cluster of people who can win and lose games and that's a danger scenario for the ACC All right finally the two teams or three teams in your mind who could be spoilers this year in the ACC who are still flying under the radar Had pretty decent showings in week one even if it was against the Patsy
Give me two to three teams. I mean wake is the top of that list that you preach you to the choir You and I have talked before like But I think I'm even going more than wake is just gonna be a tough out and wake's gonna get to somebody two wakes gonna get a few Some bodies like like I think they have that ability Geolope is is a different quarterback now. Yeah, with that coaching So yeah, I think wakes at the top of my list have I given up on Georgia Tech As a title contender. Yes as a team that can be a tough out. No Like I don't think they're gonna get pushed around the way they did in that first ballgame weekend weekend I just don't think that's the DNA of that program of Brent Keat I just don't see it. So I've still got Georgia Tech as the team that's gonna spoil things for a lot of people by being good But not great the only other team I would have mentioned who all of us kind of Converged on to Barry in the preseason and dumped dirt on it was The quintessential example of groupthink was Syracuse
So I have my own them. I'm still not sold. I just have my own. I mean they certainly showed some offensive pop You know in the quarterback apparently came out healthy. I know there was a scare there the young running back as a stud But um, I'm just not I'm not sold on Syracuse. I'm not saying they can But tough out I'm just saying they can be a thorn in the side. Well, Pittsburgh's Pittsburgh's in that like yeah Now, mates and hydro throwing seven touchdown passes jumps out at you I do not understand why patonarduzy had him in the game in the fourth quarter But that's a separate he's still 37 touchdown passes So credit there All right, you're the best seat now so we have more to get to on the other side with Mike Barber So stay to welcome back to college football talk This is the best seat in the house only on w.i.a. and streaming live online at sevo right now.com I'm your host Luke near my guest right now is mike barber Who you can find at sevo right now.com. He's the editor and chief doing stories when everything from local news to sports and we're talking sports right now
Obviously All right, Mike. Let's go to Virginia Norfolk State We buried the lead but I'm trying to find angles for this one And besides from Mike Vic be it back in town I think it's going to be routine for Virginia. I think they're going to stay in their base I don't think we're going to learn a whole lot more about The dynamics of this team I think we're just going to see a ton of bodies But where did you land and considering Friday night? Yeah, I mean they certainly should win this convincingly If they play the way they play against NC state that is more than enough to control this game from start to finish obviously A couple of things I'm looking for Do they have any evolution in the passing game? I don't mind the idea that this is a run heavy team and that their passing game play action and set up off that more guys involve more guys catching passes what kind of a Step can the receivers take look rica florises out again Dylan Newton short out again. They're coming back Hopefully for the west Virginia game, but can we see some growth and some progress in the receivers
Camp Courtney I asked Tony Elliott about camp Courtney during the weekend and I said respectfully like This is a guy who people have been waiting for more from and Tony Elliott kind of agree. He basically said He can't bang on camp Courtney because he does what we ask him to do But there's got to be more there. He's got to turn a routine play into big plays That's what everyone's waiting for so this is the kind of matchup that can get a player like that going right because if you throw him A little short pass coming out of the slot or you get him coming in motion and coming around and flip him the ball Like this is the kind of game where he should be able to take a routine play and instead of getting 60 yards get 60 Those are the kind of things I'm looking for same on the defense the defense was really great against NC state I want to see them be explosive and dynamic. I want to see them get home with the blitzes They did a nice job with pressure against NC state. Let's get home on some blitzes. Let's generate more turnovers So those are the things in a matchup like this. I want to see you yes dominate control Exegate your base But individual guys should be able to make big plays and this is an opportunity
Necessarily thing. It's can happen for coaches to play little side games with their players For example I'm not claiming this is going to happen, but hey blooper bula you're going to play a half I want to see you throw for 170 yards out of your comfort zone Because what any throw for 300 plus once last year that would be a little dangling carrot challenge for example I'm not saying it's going to happen, but these are just Ideas and it's the balance right look if you don't want to put too much on tape So you don't want to open up if you've got some throws that you think booper bula can make that you haven't shown Still in the game. You don't want to show them in Norfolk state that being said I also think you want to get some confidence and momentum in that passing game, right? So I would like to see again. I'm fine with it being play action being when Norfolk Norfolk state is kind of a Eight man up to the line in the box stop the run d that's a way they're designed anyway This should be a game schematically where play action and over the top is there
Now flip side is if you show a bunch of your passing game other opponents are going to have to prepare for everything then That's a fair point right if you show me that you can throw short middle and deep and I've got to worry about your run game More to come I think we've reached a point in college football where everybody's preparing for everything anyway Right like I don't think anyone's preparing for Virginia saying We don't have to guard against a deep pass It's just about emphasis and about when you call it and you know how confident is Virginia wants to come out of Norfolk state With opposing defensive coordinators saying they'll throw it on any down And that's what I don't think we've seen from Virginia, right? Like they want to run the football and then they'll strike you with a big play But can the passing game be how they move the football? All right, Mike Barbers with me on the best of the house. Let's get to the fun stuff the rest of college football In week two my lock of the week. I'm laying it with Oklahoma at Michigan I just think it's a mismatch and sometimes people get caught up in Little rules that aren't necessarily as sure fire as most think about not over reacting and home field
Give me the talent and I think that's going to be a reckoning game at noon That's one of the headlighters in week two It's a fascinating game because if you're Michigan you're one of two things You're a team that's barely better or not better than western Michigan Or you're a team that didn't play up to potential and everyone's banging on you and you want to come out and show it so Michigan scares me a little if I'm Oklahoma in that regard I ultimately think I air closer to the first choice. I don't think Michigan's that good is what we saw And I think Oklahoma will beat them But I think there's an element of Michigan that should come out with their hair on fire in that ballgame Because everybody's saying you should have lost because you're not that good and Your garbage and all all of that noise what does Michigan do with that? So Yeah, I think that's really uh, doesn't matter if your quarterback can't complete passes though If you're really revved up for a game. I mean That's where I keep going back to if you don't have good quarterback play you can't win big games And so that's the question is did Michigan get what it's gonna get all year or did Michigan just not get very good quarterback play from underwood in game one
Hard to know the answer until after this game um I'm fascinated by Alabama Kentucky Right, that's number two on my list like I think Alabama should go to Kentucky and dump truck that team But I'm not sold that's gonna happen Right, so this is a reckoning game for me for Alabama if Alabama goes to Kentucky and wins convincingly I'm gonna have a much different opinion of them than if they go and struggle is Alabama the chip on the shoulder team of 2026 I mean Michigan may have just stolen that mass. Oh after the way the helmet, but yeah, I think Alabama is They had all summer look here's what Alabama is Alabama is Clemson Everybody says you're dynasties over you're done Except I don't know that Alabama that that's true about Clemson I'm starting to think like man. There's a lot of chinks in that armor. It's over Alabama is a team that everybody's pissing on and they're like hey, we're still Alabama So yes, I think chip in the shoulder and I think this game in particular for me is show me your identity show me if you're still Alabama
Finally, let's go to the marquee matchup of week two. We finally get a good one a top five clash It's at DKR Number four, Texas hosting number one Ohio state seven thirty I have not discovered which side of on in this one mic from a handicapping perspective who I would pick if I had to So I'm gonna open up the floor for you to give these a bit sites or to make a case rather the buck eyes or the log hordes I think Ohio State's the better team The games in Texas so that If they're not that much of the better team This is a fascinating matchup for me. It really like this is one that I'm excited to not only watch But probably DVR and rewatch sunday and you know two or three times like I think this is going to be This is a game that we could have pegged as a national semi-final two best receiving course in the country in my mind Who has the better receivers Carol and for me it's who has the better secondary
Who's gonna get up and jam some of these guys and disrupt that timing and limit those big plays I think it's Ohio State. I think Ohio State will have the better Match up in a tough match up there. Are you saying that because you believe in Matt Patricia is DC The help more so than must champ that hell I think they're both good like I think that side of it is I think Ohio State I'm going for a personnel state like I think they have a better chance of jamming Texas receivers of the line not letting them get free Making it harder to get the big plays Again, fascinating part of the game But I think ultimately for me when I do matchups it comes down to not strength on strength But like who's gonna mitigate somebody else's strength? So if you're telling me these are two receiving cores that look dangerous. Who's got the better chance of slowing that down? Okay, the reason I'm leaning in the other direction is the following quarterback play Archbadding got better as the season progressed
He can use his legs julienne saying cannot got worse as the season progressed I think he got figured out a little bit in the Miami game. I think Indiana provided the blueprint So quarterback match up. I'm leaning Texas even though Sayon did make it to New York. I understand that. I'm just talking about big games in general What massive games did he win last year? Arch at least one one he got the Aggies at home. So That's part of it. The home crowd is the second factor for me. It's just a really difficult place to play I don't think that DKR gets enough credit. I mean Texas just doesn't lose often there. Yeah, I mean I think this Is a game that we have a different discussion on a neutral field Yes, I would agree like if they're playing this in Atlanta or in Charlotte If it's the Chick-fil-A kickoff game It's a different conversation But again, I think Ohio State is good enough to go to Texas and win
I just I think it's going to be a wealth of ballgame like I'll be really disappointed if either side is dominant in this game I'd be really disappointed if either side is sloppy and we don't really get the game to play out because of you know a funny Bounce or something I'm hoping that this is on display everybody thinks Ohio State is good everybody thinks Texas is good I want to come out of this game saying everybody was right those teams are good I let it go. What worth it? How many teams come in the national title even I talked about it in the summer. I was at seven. I've expanded I believe to nine. It's right. I'm now. I'm adding LSU and I'm getting at Oklahoma Pretty maturely potentially, but I'm adding those two So my list is in no particular order Indiana Ohio State Georgia Notre Dame Texas Miami Oregon LSU Oklahoma. I think you have to add LSU you have to like LSU to me is top five It's to me. It's more likely right now that LSU is in the national semi-finals
Uh, then not like I that's how good I think LSU looked um, and you want to talk about a chip on the shoulder where you shouldn't have one Like LSU doesn't really have a reason to have a chip on their shoulder But Lane Kiffin plays that villain card so well they've got that going You know I was huge on Oregon Underwhelmed by their first performance when we start talking about coaching for Oregon in that aspect I mean not till after the year to take a line from Davos weeny come back and ask me that question after the year Think about all these coaches, okay? Kirby Signeti Marcus Freeman who's been in a title game Those are big type coaches. I think they're gonna out scheme and then Lane also I'm throwing him into the blue chip coaching category. What is Ryan Daylor? I don't think so. I think Ryan Day is hey, I've got tons of talent And I think Dan Lenny is hey, I always have talent and I think Sark is I've always got talent So Sark's an interesting one those three teams
Probably have the most talent, but the others make it up in coaching. That's all I'm saying That's where I think Georgia is intriguing as a national title because I think they've got the best mix of coaching and talent Yeah, he might be right But yeah, no, I think that's a good list again I'm a little disappointed when I saw from Oregon, but not giving up on them very up on LSU and what I saw from them Miami, it still remains right like Miami's that my am is the cutoff line right that they're the cut line for are you gonna be playing on the weekend Uh, and I don't know which side Miami falls on right now I still need to see more from their defense Yeah against substantial competition. Okay, Mike tell us what's happening at seville right now that calm before we let you go Yeah, we got some big follow-ups this week. We had uh The city of Charlottesville cleared that homeless encampment at free bridge I've got a story that just went up asking the question where do all those people go Because about 50 of them went to the new shelter that leaves about 70 kind of unaccounted for it Are we gonna have another encampment kind of pop up somewhere? So we're looking at that
We also got some interesting news out of that shooting that happened the last 4th of July Turns out the person that police arrested while he set off the melee and fired the first shots His guns did not strike any of the people the five people who were shot that day So who did shoot the five people on arns dale avenue last 4th of July? So we're looking at those two big stories this week can't wait to follow along seville right now dot com Thanks again, Mike. You're in the best seat in the house on w i a I want to get into a little bit more Of the coaching matchup do up on Friday Why do I say that well because on one side line you're gonna have to do it all yet And on the other side line you're gonna have michael vick And what's amazing is these two Actually were contemporaries As players believe it or not it's been that long Since michael vick Was in our lives as a player In college and we got to go way back
early 2000s The national championship game against florida state i vividly remember that one inside the dome But totally Elliott spoke on this when he was asked about michael vick the significance of Goat up against him This Friday and do the players care are they too far removed To remember that era unless they see some clips on social media tic-toc or youtube or Instagram the old michael vick was something else he was a problem Now if they see those sure on them they'll get a little bit of a history lesson But they're not gonna get the entire scope And then i'll give you my perspective but first totally Elliott talking about Mike vick i don't know You know and we haven't talked about it a ton But i know with the staff and i know for me like i mean come on this is this this michael vick now like like i That's a household name all you gotta say is vick All right like you you know how to save might you just say vick and everybody knows like who that guy was
I saw it up close to person on my uh I think it was a sophomore Playing uh my infresh me here playing down there cally. He was uh he was special And uh train he he He transformed the game like when you start talking about dual threat quarterbacks like i mean he's he's the prototype Right and then you know what he did it as a lefty When everyone he was like i left down in quarterbacks. I mean he just proved everybody wrong And he could beat you from the pocket And then when he took off in a run like there wasn't anybody better In a league uh what the what the ball in their hands and he made those freakish like Once in a generation type of of plays and so that's who that's who michael vick is to me and man I'm just excited to have a chance to to meet him right and and and i got tremendous uh amount of respect for Who he is as a person All that he's been through and then you know the impact that he's now that he's now making right um And and that's what he probably may not get as much credit for people are gonna remember him for you know
All of the great plays, but you know what he's done with his life I mean it's it's very commendable right well I'm gonna pause there. I'm also gonna remember him leading a dog fighting ring I'm just gonna throw that in there because i i haven't heard too many people mentioned this In the past week or in the past few years and went to prison for two years now he served his time seems like He changed his ways Was very remorseful but i just need to add that in there because it is part of the story Of his career and after he retired as an enough old quarterback and actually in the middle of his career We actually had to mention that because there was the Atlanta Phase which was lengthy and then obviously the philly short phase dream team and then we had obviously The animal cruelty Drowning electrocuting animals It was awful. I just want to mention that because it's part of the story and
I think some people kind of just brush over that Anyway back to totia leot Talking about bike vick like like he's he's had to learn you know through some adversity And now he has an unbelievable platform and you can see it in the way that his guys play and his guys they play hard And they're good they're they're they're very competitive they're like he was right They play with class They're very well coached so you can see just kind of all of those things about like who he is in his journey and life You know coming out in the identity of his football team totia leot talking about the opposition or the opposing coach This upcoving Saturday if you're a virgin you fade you never like to bike vick. I never did Um when he was in school now those two years Yes, he got us. I vividly remember where I watched the charlotte soul game. I was not at scott stadium for it and Wasn't our strongest effort. I'll just say that much wasn't our best team that was
Front and center. What was that 2001? Somewhere in that facility, but yeah, I was never a fan. I always thought he was a little overrated as well in the pro ranks Because he kind of after that win at Lambo against screen bay It was not very good the rest of his career at Atlanta and I remember having falcons fans in my life Who would frequently ask me about this and say hey I kind of deep down what match shop in there who was backing up my vick for I mean it seemed like an eternity But those are my thoughts and then obviously I just had to bring up The time served and the dog fighting stuff now. I believe in forgiveness Obviously you have to We're all setters I'm a Christian. I believe in forgiveness. I need it every single day So I'm glad to hear that He's turned it around But it is part of the story that we can't just completely brush up anyway 642
In charlotte's film You're in the best eating house on w i a Here's what's coming up next we're gonna take a look at a few other storylines In week two I know we've already touched briefly on the big games Texas Ohio State Oklahoma, Michigan I want to go a little bit more in depth on that matchup Then we might even scout some of the other games say at 330 Alabama Kentucky is intriguing Adam has that as his lock of the week He's believing in the brute force of killing the boar and the Alabama crimson tide To overwhelmstein and Kentucky Acts of 330 what else should we be paying attention to With our free Saturday since Virginia obviously is not planned you won't need to tailgate on Saturday You'll do that Friday night hopefully if you are going to the game So we'll go there next to conclude this Wednesday edition of the best seat in the house I'm lute near with you on the best seat in the house vital segment But to talk about games
That potentially could entertain you for a variety of factors Texas Ohio State's number one and I'm leaning Texas because a Ohio State is a luck box, but sometimes that actually uh should go in your favor if you're actually handicapping a game luck does matter, but I just think Julian saying In a road environment that atmosphere When he's he got up against a blue chip team in that atmosphere Washington last season does not count so this is his first time on the road In that type of environment I'm just curious to see how it plays out and DKR is a fortress Guess how many games Texas has lost in the last three seasons at home That's a trivia question. I'm going to bring in my buddy over here who's Our observer every now and then Simon go where it's he comes into the studio Observes he shadows he takes notes
One day potentially broadcasting could be in his future. Guess how many games Texas has lost in three years Simon is it three no less one one So That tells you how good they've been at DKR in the last three years And when you're trying to prognoscate when you're trying to pick these games You've got to envision what it's going to look like that's why uniform competitions are so important to me It helps me visualize okay Mike and I went over that game though. I want to get into a little bit more from Michigan and Oklahoma and this is just building my case after listening to what Bryce Underwood quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines had to say in his press conference today Didn't necessarily install a ton of confidence in me. He was asked about his head coach Kyle Wittingham In his post-gave are actually in his week two press conference talking about how It's not as if his job is infinite and it's not up for grabs. He's still QB1, but it's not as if
He can go out there and have Seven turnover worthy plays every single game and everything be hunky-dory So that's pretty much what Kyle Wittingham had coach of Michigan said And then Bryce Underwood was asked about those comments. I'm just going to give you some of the press conference It did not install confidence in Michigan fans. That's at least what I'm guessing I was your reaction to the coach of the games comments about how that your job is in permanent Um, those comments about that Yeah, he said that if your job is in infinite, you know, that's the start That's cool. I see that so Once you're with a bunch of rads. Yeah, it's cool All right, pause, pause, pause Bryce Underwood Seems like he's a little bit checked out That's just a gut feeling. This is not a first-year player. This guy is a sophomore He went through everything last year. He knows the drill Let's get back to a little bit more of this press conference
It's always in the spotlight. I was just him said ramped up even more so after this first week How do you take it all in stride? Um, I haven't been on such a decent fall camp So I mean it's not really much to talk about it with it. So So the And after game like that, are you going to be able to motivate coming into this one? You know, they call it I'm motivated no matter what so I mean when lose the drum ready to go for the next week and be wanting to know so that's a blessing to have So just ready to go for the next week. Okay, that's Bryce Underwood again I don't know Just reading into the situation Not the greatest amount of confidence in Michigan this year especially after how they fared against western Michigan They were outplayed they lost the game But a second was added so Michigan could have one more opportunity which they did convert on With the heave to the end zone, but I'm just judging body language. I'm judging response
Not thoroughly excited For Michigan to play and come out with their hair on fire this Saturday Just judging from these comments reading the tea leaves. I wanted to throw that in there because I didn't even have this in my handicap fifth game My handicap was basically Oklahoma has a great defensive line and a great offensive line and they had the better quarterback who's not going to make Turnover worthy plays and They've got better weapons on the outside Our old guy trail Harris. It's not forget. He now plays for Oklahoma And he has somebody who's sling at him in the form of jama tier who is healthy so I make my case. I'm laying the five and a half with Oklahoma But there are other games to watch Besides from the new kickoff that I just mentioned at the big house Michigan Oklahoma And also the 730 kickoff between Texas and Ohio State. So I'm going back to Simon for a recommendation. All right, buddy You've got a game for me. Yeah, then I should pay attention to
That's not those two that I mentioned and it's also not Kentucky and Alabama. What is it? I'm very excited about BYU versus Arizona. Why? They're both two very good quarterbacks in Noah's Fafita and Bear Bachmeyer Also BYU the last time they played Arizona last year it went into double overtime and I know Arizona once they're revenge. This is also BYU's Uh first real game in Provo the first one against Utah Tech didn't really count in my mind Yeah, and have a lot of fans So this is the first time we get to see Provo a little on fire and they've been pretty good at home in the last few years You know their home record in the last couple of seasons. I'm quizzing you now Yeah, they've only lost one game one home game in the last two years. Look at that Yeah, and also stats right on the the spot well done Arizona austa likes to throw the ball a lot and last year BYU had the ninth most Interception so you should be on a lookout for that as well. Okay, so it's a good matchup for feed versus that secondary All right, I'll keep that in mind 330 right yeah, that's the start time. So that's Simon's selection
I like that. It's not nice little Ring to it a nice alliteration right there Simon's selection on the week. Maybe we'll have to do this every couple of weeks when you Come in and shadow. So thank you. Thank you. Appreciate it. All right 654 I love having somebody coarse about it. So in this program it really is great the more microphones the better That's always how all function even though I have the main one and you have to hear me monologue frequently But see I wouldn't have put from everybody. That's why I love having guests love having Adam and Even the next generation chiming in so let's close down the program With ACC talk because Ladies and gentlemen It's officially time to pay attention to other teams and we can root for losses at this stage I'm comfortable not to say Virginia at least has a slim chance of being involved In the race for Charlotte When we hit November
I'm not saying it's a great chance But I'm saying it's a chance. So in order to improve those chances We can start rooting for or against a variety of ACC teams To make that path and make that probability higher This is something that I've done ever since I was very young I vividly remember when I was more launched into the NFL and I was a guy hard Dallas Cowboys fit I'm still a cowboy say but I'm not a die hard I'm more casual than I was. I didn't miss a game in the Roma era And I'm not exaggerating. I watched every single one Every single one But that's not me anymore. I've got too much college football to pay attention to. I need to break out someday I vividly remember growing up Watching and rooting against the redskins the Eagles and the Giants just so It would improve the Cowboys chances to win the division So I'm going to do the same thing but we're going to do it as a group
With the ACC from here on out Now we don't have too much This upcoming weekend But there's going to be a lot of opportunity in the near future Once ACC teams start playing each other And the main teams we need to lose are Louisville first and foremost After Louisville the other teams are SMU And then from there I still am going to say Clemson For Gidgetech And I'll even say let's just get the pit pathers out of this. Let's get them out of the equation I'll see them are on the bus seat in the house the same time same place
