About this episode
What if freezing wasn't the end of life—but a way to survive?
Some animals have evolved extraordinary adaptations that allow them to endure temperatures that would be fatal to most living creatures. Their metabolism can nearly stop, their hearts can cease beating, and parts of their bodies can actually freeze.
The Animals That Freeze Solid and Wake Up Alive explores the remarkable biology of freeze-tolerant animals and how they survive conditions that seem impossible.
One of the most famous examples is the wood frog.
When winter arrives, the frog can allow ice to form in the spaces between its cells while its body enters a state of extreme metabolic slowdown. Its heart stops. It stops breathing. It can remain in this frozen condition through periods of extreme cold.
The frog's survival depends on specialized adaptations. High concentrations of glucose act as natural cryoprotectants, helping protect cells from the damage associated with freezing and thawing.
When temperatures rise, the process reverses.
The frog thaws.
Its heart begins beating again.
Blood circulation returns.
Its organs resume functioning.
And eventually, it becomes active again.
Other animals use different strategies. Some insects produce antifreeze proteins that help control ice formation. Certain microscopic animals can survive freezing and extreme dehydration by entering remarkable states of suspended animation.
These animals demonstrate that survival doesn't always mean fighting an extreme environment.
Sometimes it means slowing down until the environment becomes survivable again.
Scientists are studying these natural adaptations for clues that could eventually improve cryopreservation, biological research, and the storage of cells, tissues, and organs.
Freezing solid and waking up alive sounds like science fiction.
But for some animals, it's simply another way to survive winter.
