Lux present Hollywood. The nut radio theater brings you William Powell and Colonel Lloyd in active event. Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. Sestal B. Demil. Greetings from Hollywood ladies and gentlemen. When Edgar Allan Poe popularized the detective story, he found the great common denominator of American entertainment. Millions of us have stayed up past bedtime to explore the fascinating realm of Udanov, including the President of the United States. And you can find devotees in every walk of life, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief, and probably policemen too. That's we haven't investigated this branch of the drama quite as often as we should in the luxury theater.
But when we do engage a man under, we get the very best. Tonight, our players after the thin man adapted from the MGM picture and naturally starring the same two players that go with a thin man's story, Manaloy and William Powell. It's an occasion for great producing, but we also must hang our heads a little, because it's exactly four years since Miss Lawyer was last at this microphone. There's more to the story of after the thin man than just the exciting quest of a criminal. Because our detective is the extraordinary Nick Charles, and Nick has a lovely wife named Nora. They happen to be very much in love, but even love can't keep Nora from interfering with her husband's business when she has an idea. And Nora is a girl with many ideas. Together they can solve just about any problem you give them, but you don't really need a detective to discover that Lux Flakes is the simple answer to your household problems. It's a deduction that millions of women have made after giving Lux Flakes a trial.
Now, if your wits have been thoroughly sharpened and you're ready for anything to happen, we raise the curtain on the first act of after the thin man, starting William Powell as Nick Charles and Manaloy as Nora. The lay road station in San Francisco, into the dim maze of cracks, rows of mighty streamlines, sleek and shining, after its mad dash across the country. For the final trial of its awful engines, it comes to rest. From the gate tumble the crowd of reporters and photographers. They rush,糟糕 up and down the length of the backbone. Eager to be the first to greet the arriving celebrities, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Charles. He's probably not calling for him. Well, let's get a safe of this. Is Nick Charles in the scar? Charles, you've crossed back. The fence. Oh, there he is. Hey, Blake. Hello. Yeti. Now does it feel the same? Oh, you're going to stay with us, you wanna? I'm with protocol, Mr. Charles. Hey, hey, hey. You want us to try? Dolly? Dean's up, gentlemen, the press.
Gentlemen, my wife. Hello. Hello, gentlemen. How are you? How's about a safe of Nick? Are you ready to keep on with your detective work? No, gentlemen. I've retired. Now on, I'm just going to take care of my wife's money. So I'll have something my willy. Oh, you said you'd retired before, but I'm nervous. You've picked that thin man case in New York. Oh, that thin man was a beauty. Still talking about it. You think a case like that, now, wouldn't you? I'm not a chance. I just took that to please my wife. She wanted some excitement. Well, I guess you had it, Mr. Charles. Oh, it was wonderful. Two men tried to kill him. But he's not going to take any more cases. You can fence that. That's the girl. So long, gentlemen. Come on, bottom. Good bye, man. Good bye. Good bye. I should measure. It's slow down. I can't do something today. You're all right. Excuse me, lady. I guess I wasn't looking where I was going. No. I guess you were. I have fingers. Well, well, look, Charles. Well, how are you? Fine. How business fingers? Business? Oh, I quit that racket. Yes, my first. Let's go. Oh, that's shame. All right. I want you to meet fingers McCoy. This is my wife's fingers. Your wife?
Hmm. Hey, I didn't know she was... Oh, I'm sorry about your place, Mrs. Charles. What am I doing, Nick? I know I had it with me. Oh, it'll turn up. Well, did you think it? I certainly hoped to. Assure. Well, so long, Nick. Glad I bumped into you. Good bye, Mr. Charles. Good bye. Good bye. Nick, I got to go back to the finger. Oh, I wouldn't buy the dying. Let's get home. I just can't go off. Come on, come on. You don't want to embarrass him, do you? What do you mean? Fingers. He's a purse smatcher. Think of his feeling. A purse smatcher? Well, he must have taken it. I also suppose you've got some ideas on the subject. Very definite, darling. How's the phrase of that? I want to lock the doors and talk to the bells, cut off the telephone, and call into bed for months. Mrs. Charles, you're a woman after my own heart. I won't be awake if my eyes are kitchen-out. I've seen you here, darling. Happy New Year, darling. Hi, folks. What's your standout, bad boy? Come on in. Hey, what is this? Well, it's all a hustle, right? Come on. Let's go in, darling. Hello, Selma. You need to go
Hello, dear. Hello. Is this how you know this is not Catherine? Well, what's the matter with Selma? Oh, nothing at all here You know, sir, we're gonna not pay too much attention to her. We'll see you tonight, daughter. Well, you see it's Louis's e-bag, Cassus. Oh, battle, X. Shut up What? Excuse me, I was talking to the dog. Oh, we'll expect you a seven-year-old. All right, I'm Catherine. We'll come. What did you say? I said we'd be over for dinner. Oh, my own wife. I'm sorry, but I had to do it. But Selma, she's in trouble. You like Selma, don't you? Not as much as I. But she's not so stunning. She's been crying. Living as your aunt's cover, my aunt. I have bram. Selma, don't tell me. Do you want the servants to hear? I don't care, I'm Catherine. I'm going crazy. I can't stand it any longer. I'm really call the police. You do nothing of the sort. Haven't we paid out enough to push up these other scams? We never did anything like this before. How do we know what he made
there? I told you I'd handle this. Go on this way. I was my husband. Yes, Henry. It's a big, hard and maddening, but you're I should have placed the Mr. Robert tonight. Certainly, Mr. Robert will be here. Very good, never. No way he won't be here. I know nothing of the sort. Now, what's there's make yourself presentable. When Nora comes, I'm really telling you. We'll not tell her. I will not have that husband of hers, moving into our family. I don't care, you can help us. I'm going to tell him the whole story. She loves me. What? What? What? I have a cat that wants to speak to you. What do I do now? You've been wrong for? Nick listen. You know why Robert wasn't here tonight. Sure, because he's smart. I'm not saying he's disappeared. That's swell now, but you don't want to get a rid of my cat, and we'll be all set. Come on. She's going to lie to her in the sun. Here he is, Aunt Aston. Oh, Nick and I, I'm sorry to take you away from the family.
Oh, that's fine. I mean, it's quite alright. Well, what's all this about, Selman? How long's Robert been gone? Three days. Three days without a word. You notified the police? Certainly not, and we're not going to. Oh no. Robert made a kidnap. Maybe I did somewhere, but we mustn't do anything about it. Oh, precious name. My guest in the paper. Oh, don't pay any attention to us. He's exaggerating the whole affair. However, to please, what I thought you might investigate the matter quietly. With your experience as a...as a flat foot. And I didn't mean to be as blunt as that. Oh, I thought it's all this family. Selman, have you any idea where Robert might be? No. But there's a woman mixed up at a time there. Selman, you know nothing about the thoughts. What about the vanity case they sent me from that Chinese restaurant? Well, there's a stupid mistake on there. There's a state, some woman left it. He was there with some woman. Tell me you know the blood of worship. Who can you say that? Do you know he hates me? He only married me for my money. He never did love me. Sometimes I wish he were dead. Well, I'm a little confused. Tell me, Selman, do you want him back or don't you? Well, she wants him back.
Don't, Selman. Please tell him, Selman. I'll take you up to you and drop the car. You hear it at the moment? Did you hear something from your... It was you, me? Nara? Give it to me. Well, Nick, what do you think about it? I'm not thinking at all. What are you giving me into? There are lots of detectives in this town. A man who needs a job. Did no one as good as you, Nicky? I won't get you a thing. I've retired. The fish is different. This is the Selman. Who will help find Robert Roenton? What, I didn't lose him. It's your chance, Nick. It'll get you into that with a family. That's just why I'm afraid of it. Nicky. Get the half-doggy. We're going to get out of here while we still got the chaps. Well, it's going to be. Don't give your ears to me. We've got to go some way. All right, let's go look to Robert. Now, listen to my sweet. Oh, Nicky. Oh, are you there, Ed? Yeah, you've been home nice to see you. What are you standing out here for? Well, they don't let me in the house anymore. Tell them that you tried meeting later. I'm afraid she won't be able to make it. If you know that Robert had disappeared.
If he has, it's the only decent thing he's ever done. Why'd she been up to lately, David? The last thing he pulled on me was a couple of days ago. All of a sudden, if I'd given him $25,000, he'd go away and leave some of to me. Lovely boy. What did you say? I asked him to give me a couple of days to think it over. You know, $25,000 would be cheap if he'd really go. Why don't you pick up a collection? A lot of people would like it. I'm sure they'd tell me. Did you see something? How is she? I'm terribly worried about her. I know, I am too. Come on, David. We're going to go someplace and get the taste of respectability out of our mouth. Thanks, but I couldn't. Oh, David, why not? I've got too much on my mind. Well, I'm glad you're back anyway. Happy New Year to you. Happy New Year. Summer was a fool not to have married him instead of Robert. They can't all be as lucky as you, darling. Well, where are we going? How do you feel about some Chinese food? Awful. Oh, I'm so sorry. Because we're going to that Chinese restaurant to send the compacts to film us. The light cheese. Sweet, darling. Now see here. I'm not looking for Robert. Of course you are not.

I'm you. Remember? Oh, yes. Yes. These are the ones who spread a pound war out to include sticking up a bank. Oh, you bet you. You catch my baller. You play. Click on him. No, play. Click on it. You're still in jail? Oh, you bet you. Oh, five years more. Goodbye. Have nice dogs. Is he a tall man too, Mrs. Dancer? No, but you never can tell how close brothers are. I thought you might like some known Nick. Thanks. He's a good guy to have a liking you. Oh, that's a table 11 of the walls. This way, Mrs. Charles. Nicky, there's Robert. I know, I saw him before. Why didn't you tell me? Robert? Robert. Oh, hello. He's Robert. Happy New Year. Is it? Robert, what are you doing in a place like this? We just saw Selma Robert. Yeah? She's terribly worried about you. Don't you think you'd better go home? Sure I'll go home. When I feel like getting up before. Robert. Oh, let me go. You actually came from Nick?
Oh, is that so our friend of yours? On a contrary, he's a relation. I've been hanging around here drunk for three days. He's got a case in our thermodynamic. I wish you'd touch him off. The virus is going crazy. Oh, that's too bad. I'll speak to you with girlfriend. Well, I've done nothing. Hey, Holly. Holly. Come here. What's up, cancer? I'm a boy friend of yours, but he drunk. So far. I thought that was the idea. He's been happy. Sure, but a couple of his relations just blew in. Relations? What do we do? Give their customers one more strong and then knock off for the night. I entakes him out of here. Okay, but I'm getting sick of that guy. Why don't you just be to Lamar and Honey and then he can turn him loose? Tomorrow's the holiday. The bank will be closed. That's right. Well, then the next day. I've watched the different standard words. I guess so. I'll make a snappy, Holly. I'll keep an eye on him. He's Holly. Yeah, I'll watch. I got a message for you. What is it? Your brother's looking for you. My brother? Where is he? In your dressing room. He wants to see you right away.
Hello, Holly. But no matter, he looks happy to see me. Please, Bill. Don't let us start anything. You're going to hurry. You're going to hurry ever since I got back. Can I help if I got to work? That's not what I'm chicken about. But go along with this drunk, Robert Landis. Nothing. Oh, no. Then what they're check doing on your dressing table. Give me this. A check made out to you. Signed by Robert Landis. Get out of here. What are you doing? Get up or else smack you right in the teeth. I'm in on this, you know. Till please. If you don't cut me in the parties off. I can't cut you in. But check yours, ain't it? Yes, but. But what? Let me go. Let me go. Sure. But this is just to remind you that I'm in on the deal. Hey, D'Lod, look what you've done to my face. Oh, my god, you're explaining that. There's a lot of things you'll have to explain before I'm through. You and Dan, for taking this land to Skype for plenty of dough, aren't you? What about it? How much? Come on, how much? 25,000. Did you get it yet? No. Go ahead, spill it. Some friend of his wife is putting it up to get him to leave her alone. So you're going to keep him drunk and then collect it for him? When? I don't know. Where I sit? Tomorrow night.
Okay. I'll be around the next morning. Early. What are you doing here? Hi, dancer. Just leave him. So long, Polly. What did that feel like? Nothing. It's okay, dancer. Now listen, there's a switch in the plans. I just heard that dough was being handed over tonight. To life. That David guy has beaten landers in front of his house. Now you better be with me to see. I'll be there. I told Nick that he would take a land as home. Now make sure they see as you go out. Sure. And when the dough is delivered, you know what to do. I'll be across the street just in case something goes wrong. Now get going. And no slipper. Hey! Hey! How are you? I'm good. Happy New Year, Nicky. Happy New Year. Happy New Year. I'm fine. I want to call a film and see if Robert has got a phone. Come on, I'll see you phone and Johnson's off. Give him a line.
Hello, Dancer. Man. What are you doing in his office? It's calling a number. An objection? And once a gum heel or was a gum heel? I don't like gum heels. I thought you could when you married a pot of money. Did he call me a pot? Hey, I don't like to be critical, Dancer. She doesn't look quite right when you and your partner and your prima d'ana and your best customer all go out of the zone. I'm not going to be a good guy. I'm not going to be a good guy. He's not going to be a good guy. That's not going to be a good guy. I'm not going to be a good guy. You're a prima d'ana and your best customer all go out of the same time. He gives a place as an ordinary vacant look. Have you ever been flown out of a place, Mr. Charles? How many places was it up to yesterday, Mrs. Charles? How many places have you been in, Mr. Charles? No more cases. No more detecting, promise. But this is important. Do you want me to let her out, Mr. Charles? Definitely not. Nicky, please. Well, promise. I've done. All right, let her out, Nicky. Nick, have you been working on the case? I've been getting it. I'm divided attention. What have you found out? Nothing. Oh, Nick. You only knew development is. It's a poly-as-a-brother. Where we don't know. What about her and dancer, Nunn Key? All in the neighborhood. At the time of the shooting. We've established that, but we can't prove a thing. But Nick, somebody killed him. There's I think that's been proved. Is it Charles? Yes. I'm telling the neighborhood that once you're for questioning. Questioning? Nicky, they won't say God-nicks' stuff in this. Don't worry, darling. If they find you guilty, I'll write you every day. Yes, sir, please. Nicky. I'll tell Mr. Graham, will you and Robert Landis on good times decided to not? On bad times, Mr. Graham? Very bad. You and Mrs. Landis were once engaged, weren't you? Until Landis came along? Yes. Have I asked at the boss, him and marry you? I may have. She never said she wouldn't, but she'll hope she would.
And you thought that with him out of the way she might. I didn't kill Robert. No, of course not. But she had paid him to go away. Yes. You're kind of Abrams? My wife. Oh, come on in. I've got to ask you some questions, Mr. Charles. I'm sorry. Quite all right. Go ahead. How about Mrs. Charles? Why did you go to Mr. Graham's apartment? What? What? Maybe I'd better leave. No. Selma had a silly idea that David thought she killed Robert. She wanted me to tell him that she didn't. Well, I can't imagine how she could think of things like that. To ridiculous, I haven't seen a broke-up of days. Here's Mrs. Landis's boss. No, will you commend Mrs. Landis? David, oh, I didn't want you dragged into this. I know. It's all I do. Mrs. Landis, why did Mr. Graham think you killed your husband? I never said that. I never thought for one minute. Don't, David. He had every right to think I did. And he's just trying to protect me. He heard a shot. He rushed up to me and saw me standing near Robert or the gun in my hand. But I didn't fire the shot. It came from the street. You mean you didn't kill him? No, look at the gun, David.
It hasn't been fired. Oh, Selma, forgive me. Of course I forgive you. Well, that's all cleared up. Oh, my. It isn't cleared up as far as I'm concerned. I've got to have something more than that. Where's that gun, Mrs. Landis? I've got to see that gun. Well, I haven't got it. Why? Well, David took it from me. David, where's the gun? What is it, David? Selma, I thought you were guilty. I thought I was doing the only thing. I threw it away. You threw it away? I threw it into the river. Oh, that's marvelous. Well, take him and get it. I'll show them where I threw it. I'll get drivers to get down. I have to go down. They must. Oh, wait. You don't want that gun back anymore than you do. Hey, Max, where are the guards for the arrest of Mrs. Robert Landis? I'm suspicion of murder. Mrs. Mrs. Are you awake? Huh? No. Sorry, I... Oh, I thought you... Did you say something about scrambled eggs?
No, no, I didn't. I suppose that means you'd like me to go pick some for you. Oh, no. I don't care about them. Sure. Really? Good. Good night. Good night. After all, if I want scrambled eggs like me, get me for myself. Go, son, now I have to go to cook, or you'll order. Oh, well, don't bother about them. You go on sleeping. I love to watch you sleep. You look so cute. Nikki, have you had any pictures of yourself taking me to the baby? No. That's a shame. I wanted to see what you looked like. I wanted to take him to the morning. Who are you, son? Who are those? Nikki, can you reach the water? Huh? Oh, yes, that's both of them. Yes. Oh, I didn't want it. I just wanted to show you the reach of... Please, go to sleep. I can't.
I keep sending them Selma down in that jail. Darling, there's nothing to worry about. Tomorrow they'll find the gun. They won't even fire. Selma will be free. Then you don't think she did it. For the ten-time know. You're not saying that just make me happy. You really need it? Yeah, I need it. Of course you're right. She didn't do it. She couldn't decide. I don't think I'd turn you if you ran off of another woman. Thank you, darling. I might, though. No, don't be morbid. Don't be sick. What's the name of it? Nick the winner. Keep a head down. Nick, somebody smashed the winner. No, really? Look, there's a rock. With a note attached to it. Let's do a note. Let's see. What is it? What did you say? A silly little woman I told her to stop writing for me. I'm going. Please, meet it. Mr. Nick Charles, if you want to know something about the murder of Robert Lambas, get a line
on Phil Buns, the guy Polly says is a brother. He's an ex-con and was married to Polly and to Pika Kansas three years ago. Married three years ago. What are we supposed to do? Send him an anniversary present? I think the way this one is supposed to pick up T-O-P-E-K-E-R. What's the matter with that? Nothing's odd. You're not. Nick, you can't go back to sleep now. Four maidens. What? I'm having them here, tipping us up all night? Don't you see? The silator has been then he shot Robert because he found out about him in Polly. Nick, you've got to call him. Just as you say. I remember the phone. It was wonderful everything's working out beautifully. All we have to do is find the skull of Phil Buns and we got the murder of. Dear darlings, call him into... Now who can ask me? Oh. Hello, Nick. Here's your tape. Oh, I'm just going to call you. Yeah? Well maybe you better get down. You know that guy Phil Buns, Polly's brother.
Yeah, what about him? We placed him to his hotel. You find him? Yeah. When somebody else found him in place, he's been murdered. Well, every year's. That's the way we found him, Nick. He had for two hours at least. Strangle. It's like he was beaten up at the foot of his family and set in. Anything different? All over the place. We're checking on him now. What else do you find? Now look at him like. He had a 38-inch drawer, six bullets in it and a little gold. Oh yeah, this key. I guess this is the key to Polly's apartment. It's got a number standard. Another good guess would be that some of my landers didn't do this. Fair enough. But he wasn't killed away land, this was he? It might be a good idea to check the chambers on that 38-inch. He might have fired it and slipped in a new shell. Okay. Anything else on your mind? Uh, yes. A key to Polly's apartment. Got a bar at the now? Sure. Yeah. Maybe I better give him a skeleton key too. That's for good measure. Okay.
What do you look at that? The famous guy there. Just a hunch. Call you later. Okay. Look, what did you find in there? Dead man. Is that all? Is that enough? Where are we going now? Well, I don't know about you. I'm going to visit Polly Burns. At this time of night without a shakero? No, this is purely business. For me too. Come on, darling. She's not home. Miss Burns keeps late hours, hasn't she? Yeah. Make way to get that too. From April, this was a Phil Burns pocket. Oh. Good you had an answer for that. Go on in. Be quiet. Here's a light switch. You turn it on. What do you expect to find in here? I don't know. Well, how do I know what's next for? Don't look for anything over there and sit down.
So she comes in. What do we do? That I just surprised by. Anything on the floor? Anything to be a chance. You're trying to just cover people around the home in the ceiling. They don't. Some people do. Look up there. Where? Up there. See. In the corner. A little home. It's faster. Look at that. Well, it might mean that the ceiling is falling down. Or it might. What? What's the dump that is a pocket? 3D. I never lived in a pocket for a few. I'm scared. My God. Here it is. 4D. This is right over Tady Burns' apartment. What's the name of a bell? Anderson. Say, why did you dig up all these keys? We're going to have desert mistrust. Or Miss Anderson. It doesn't say which. Anybody home? Put on my light. Let's see. The hole in the ceiling downstairs was right behind me. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see.
I'm going to have to see. The hole in the ceiling downstairs was right under this corner. I'm going to have to see these floorboards on a beluce. I'm going to have to see. I'm going to have to see. Somebody took this apartment so they could see what went on downstairs. Exactly. Look through the hole in the key. What do you see? Well. That's funny. Where is it? I can't see anything. It's the hole, it's the pluck up on the other side. Right? There's something down there now. Somebody knows about this people. Look at that, it's the pluck. Look at that. You can see that. Look at that. Look at that. Look at that. I can see. There's something down there now. Somebody knows about this people. Look at that. You stay here. No, I'm not going to be the murderer. It's great. Look at this. Listen, wherever it is just that, I can even go downstairs. Look, go and go. I'll probably catch everybody at the street. Look, wait for me. Well, did you see who it was? No. You want to see that door at the end of the hall? That must go to the cellar.
Don't move. Make me careful. The flat is pitched down there. It's like that, darling. Would you like to come on upstairs? Or have to come and get you? All right. Now that you're away. Come on, I can see you over there. Come on, I'll be there. Look, look, are you all right? I'm okay. Come on, I'm. I can see. I'm going to get you. No, but I didn't get you. You're not proven over there. Oh, darling. I'm so scared for all of you. I'm going to get you on the ground. Are you sure you're all right? Or nitty-a-blavy. What are you talking about? I'm not breathing.
Hey, where are you? I'm here. I'm going to save this lot over here. You're just heard act two of After the Thin Men with William Paul and Lenneloy. During this treatment of missing performance, the meal presents act three. We bring you another story about Mary. She's watching this. Oh boy, is she mad? I say, look at her hands. They're all red. And coarse. Yeah, let's see your soap, Mary. It's harsh. And soap, it's harsh. PeX away at your hands. No wonder they're red and rough.
Here's a friendly tip. Try a new quick lux. It's so kind to your hands. So mild, so pure. I want you to hear about our one-hand test of five dishwashing soap including lux. Now, here's the story in the words of one of the women who took the test. It says, you ready of New York. She says, for twenty minutes, three times a day, that's just about the time I spend doing my own dishes. I get one hand in lux suds and the other in suds from another soap. Mrs. Runny took that test for several weeks under conditions, similar to home dish washing. She goes on to say, at the end of the test, my lux hand was pure nice and smooth, while the other hand was coarse and red. I hadn't realized there was such a difference in this washing soap. I'll never use anything but lux. Henry took that one hand test with similar results. It proved lux kind as to hands. Try it yourself and see. Ask for the generous large box of new quick lux tomorrow and use it for dishes every day.
It's so frifty. Even in hard water, it gives more suds out for ounce than any of ten overleading soap's tested. It's passed too. Yet it costs you no more. Remember, new quick lux in the same familiar box. We pours now for station identification. This is the Columbia Dubhesting System. Curtain rises on at three, about to the thin man. In the thick blackness of the cellar, Nora has dumped into a man she thought was Nick. Now she discovers a mistake and Nick rushes to her side to pick ten fingers despite her match.
There in the wavering light, a man stands, tucked against the wall. As they stare at his greening white face, he slumps to the floor at their feet. Nick! Oh, that's a greasy. Is it? Yeah? It's dead. Shut up. It's been a while. I've seen that man before. You love him? Who is he? Lighten on the match. Quick. Well? Of course I know. His name is Pedro de Mendes. He used to be my father's gardener about six years ago. Your father's a gardener. Well, that was a lot of good. Come on with the recall evils. What did you find out? Was I right about his name? Yes, you were Mrs. Charles. Hey, go to the business. But he wasn't a gardener anymore. He was jammed through this building. Probably shot up out five hours before you father. But he's a very funny thing.
Go ahead with this battle, I've heard. The telephone company tells us that about 11.30 last night. That'd be just before we shot it. Someone here called up information and asked for Nick Charles's number. Power number? What would Pedro de Mendes be calling Nick for? No, I don't know. Are you, Nick? I can't imagine I haven't even heard his name for six years. Did you remember when your source face? No. That's funny. Seeing he used to be Mrs. Charles' gardener. Oh, he remembers a gardener, unless he squirts a hose after. Did you recognize him right away, Mrs. Charles? I had to look twice. He's a lot of grayer than he used to be. By the way, what did you find out about the person in the apartment over? Polly Burns? Not a thing. Not a fingerprint in a place. Not a stitcher closed. Only a hunk of lead pipe on a ladder. He's a lead pipe on a ladder. That's interesting. Anything you'd pay to his books? Yeah, I'd just said someone named Dan, the simple key of pop in a week ago, paid cash in advance. That's all. And the name is Anderson. No front name. No Mr. Mrs. or Mrs. That's just Andy.
You know, I had a feeling that a week ago, just to find out he took that room, we might have a murderer. Well, what do you think we oughta do? Get them all together in the Anderson apartment. Everyone that's mixed up in this. Let's shake them all up and see what happens. You're on. Are you going to take the murderer tonight? I'm going to try. How are you going to do it, Mickey? I haven't decided this idea. I'm just going to listen. Play that somebody makes a slit, just one slit. You got it? Get them all here? Or certain waiting. It picked up Dan, so a lump key at the L.I.C. Probably was with them. Then there's that David Graham guy and your wife's cousin, Selma Lanton. Yeah. A fat day, make all the end catalyst. I've got them along for luck, though. Oh, say before you go in, I check filled brains of poppin. Dan's a spring of prince, we're all over the joint. Dan's a sure? Sure I'm sure.
I don't tell him how to do that. Not yet. All right, don't. Watch your plan, Nick. Build up a case against each other. Throw all we've got at them and throw it hard enough to bounce. I'll make it bounce all right. And keep them talking. Nick, come on. The party's getting dull. Dying? Deering. You shut that door, please. It's enough sure. Ladies and gentlemen. I'll pass you all down here, because we've just found that another murder has been committed. The man I think you all know, Pedro Dominguez. Pedro Curet. Yes. What do you know about it, Polly? Nothing. I only saw him a couple of times when I went down to Paymer Rant. What about you, Dan sir? You're in and out of this apartment. You must have known him. Sure I know him. So what? You, Lunky. I know about fingers off before. You know him, Selvam. I? Well, no, I don't think I remember Selvam. He was our godner six years ago. Oh. David, you remember Pedro Dominguez?
Yes, vaguely. A man of long white moustaches. What did you know about him, Mr. Glam? Nothing. I had with six years ago. I haven't seen him since. Nicholas, I can't see what possible connection this can have with us. He's very simple on Kevin. You see, Pedro and Robert were both shot with the same gun. Wow. I know. I know. There was a multi-business going on. We want to find out about it. It seems that one week ago, Pedro rented an apartment to someone calling himself or herself Anderson. Did you ever see this Anderson, Polly? No. Did you ever hear anyone in the apartment just over you? No. I thought not. This Anderson intended to climb down into your apartment one night with the aid of a ladder and polish off Robert with this lead pipe. Then he was going to climb up to his place again and leave you holding the bag for Robert's murder. Now, do you know anyone who would be interested in nothing you would do that? I know. Your dance is good, aren't you? I would for it. That's not what he is. Well? Did you know that you were going away with Robert?
Well, come on. Come on. Get hold of us before. Who said you would keep that a secret? I'll never trust a cop again. You've made a dicker with the police, okay, Polly. But that letter's just a lot of Morathi and Nick. No one did come down that letter and Landis was killed in her place. The only reason the murderer didn't kill him that way was because he was found out. Pedro came in yesterday to clean up Anderson's apartment and discover the loose boards and the floor. He didn't like the looks of things, so he put a new lock on the door. When Anderson came in, he found he was locked out. He heard Pedro teleponing me and he killed him. So what? So who was Anderson? Oh, boy. Who? Polly. Still at a key here, apartment. And Dancer had one. Yeah. Who else? Nobody. He's trying to hang this murder up on us to protect his own family. That's her madame. He knocked out husband off everybody in Orzette. He didn't. And then you got your boyfriend David with a throwaway the gun. That's a lie. Ah, just a minute, please. Look, Dancer, let's come clean. You and Polly and Lumpi were out to shake Robert Landis down for 25 grand, like...
Oh, sure. Then I suppose I knock him off and stir up all this fuss before I get to dole. What kind of a stumble bum does that make me out of it? You're the kind of a stumble bum that left your finger pinch all over the room and your kill-filled bangs. Still, still dead? Yes, Frank. Well, I didn't do it. But why did you go to his place? Because I put it gummed up my game. I figured he'd try to stick up Landis and had to kill him. So I pushed him out a little to learn of manners. And when I left him, he had a split-lib and a couple of dens in him. But he was just as much sure I was you are. If that means anything. Polly, who knew Phil was your husband? What? You were a mad egg, weren't you? Yeah, I'm just... No, Phil was your husband. As if you didn't know. I never knew that now. But I wish I had, Polly. Didn't you ever tell anyone that you were mad at Polly? No. Would Phil have told? No. Did you and Phil talk about it? Yeah, one night last week. But no one could have heard. We were alone, down in my room. Alone? Don't forget Anderson could hear everything up on you, Rob. Lieutenant, when was Phil Barnes killed?
Oh, about two, and it was we can figure. At 3.30, he had us in through this note in my window. He was beginning to use some of the information he'd got out of Wally with up there. That's it. Polly, you spoke to Pika. None of your business, madam. This note is a polar-competitive literacy. The easy way to spell the wrong on the tough ones right. Like to see it, lumpy. It was meant just to steer me down to Phil's place to find his body. And you're a fingerprint, Dan, sir. Someone's plainly you, Dan, sir. Yeah. You say you don't know this paper, lumpy? No. Well, I've got a picture of him right here. This picture was taken about six years ago, and... Nick, what is it? Nothing. Except... Except that all this time I'd been waiting for someone to make a slip, and someone was making it. Who? We've been wrong. This wasn't a killing for money. It was a murder of hatred. A revenge. Polly, what did Phil go to the pen for?
Blackmail. Blackmail. David, when were you supposed to give a lot of the money to go away? The smoling. In cash? Yes. But when he decided to go last night, you had to give him bonds. Yes. Where were you going to get cash on New Year's Day? A bank holiday. Oh, yeah, forget about that. No, you didn't, David. You never meant to give it up at that money. You didn't want to go away. You wanted a killing. You were going to get even with him for taking some of my way fund. Nor is he fully. Sure. And you were fully when you said you hadn't seen Pedro for six years. You said Pedro had long white moustaches. Well, he's got long white moustaches now. But look at this picture. There he is six years ago. His moustache was neither white nor long. You would have noticed him six years ago any more than I did. You remember him as he was last night when you shot him. You killed him and then you killed Robert.
Fairl saw you do it. He was going to blackmail you so you had to kill him too. And then you threw that note in my window, or you could put me off your trail. David, don't let him say the terrible thing. Tell him it isn't true. Last time while he threw away your gun in Salmahini, he were having to be fired. He only had to show it to prove your innocence. Yet he threw it away, asked him why he did that. David, David, why don't you speak? Wasn't because you hated her as much as Robert. Wasn't because you wanted to get even referred to. Wasn't because you wanted to see her hang for Robert's murder. David, some of the truth now, David. You don't have to pretend that he more. That is the truth. I've hated you so much Robert. And since you threw me over for him, I've been watching. Waiting for the time when I could get even as you were having ruined my life. I did kill Robert. But not the way I wanted to. It was too easy, too quick. I wanted to see him suffer the way he'd made me suffer. And you. And you, I wanted to see you go gradually matter and matter as a day came when you were going to hang. Well, I'm not going to see you hang.
Well, I'm still going to see you die. What are you doing? Go, you're a fool, David. There's no way. I'm the fix force. I'm the one for her and one for myself. And there's no one who tries to stop me. Get out of the way, Charles. Get out of my way. I did it, I did it. Okay, Graham. I'll take that gun now. Nice work, Lamkey. Nice work. Nick, he saved you. And you sent his brother up. Oh, sure. Mr. Charles sent him up. Number one, detect him. I'm not like that, brother. I like his brother. I'm your friend. Oh, you bet you. Tired, darling? Not very. Well, can you believe it? We're alone. No reporters, no friends, no surprises. I suppose we really should decide where we're going. Oh, you care? No. But I haven't many clothes. Oh, the better. You won't have to pack. All I need in the world is you and a toothbrush.
Hey, what's that you're doing? I'm knitting something. No, I'm gotten very far with it. Yes, I have. There. It's done. Done? Why? That looks like... Is that a baby's sock? Mm-hmm. And you call yourself a detective. Why, Mrs. Charles? We draw the curtain on after the thin man. In a moment, Mr. Deville returns with our stars. While we're waiting, let's talk about babies. You know, families often speculate on the chances of the stark bringing twins or triplets.
Well, here's some figures that they interest you. The chances of having twins is about one in 84. Of having triplets, one in 7,500. That makes triplets a pretty rare occurrence. Mrs. Francis Bydall of Hordebrook, Massachusetts, was one of the mothers who drew the lucky number in 1939, and she's doubly lucky now because she has new quick-knucks to help her in killing for her three small babies. She says... The triplets have that sensitive skills. I wouldn't dream of washing their clothes as a harsh soap or rubbing them with cake soap. I just won't take chances on having woolen's adipers getting rough and scratchy. She's a wise mother, isn't she? She goes on to say... New quick-knucks is so mild and gentle. It's the only thing I use for the baby's clothes. It's so safe for everything, safe and water alone. I can depend on it never to make woolen's harsh and scratchy or save the pretty colors of little dresses and sunsets.
Yes, new quick-knucks is a wonderfully gentle. And so easy to use, too. So fast. It water as cool as your hand. It dissolves three times as fast as any of ten of the leading self's tested. Ask for the generous big box of new quick-knucks tomorrow. It comes in the same familiar package and costs you no more. Here's Mr. Demille with our stars. As Bill Powell and Maneloy return to the microphone, we offer our congratulations to the thin man on some first class detective work. Cecil, you're seldom wrong, but I'll have to mark that one up against you. However, if it's any consolation, everybody makes the same mistake. They should sell for a shot, Mr. Demille. Bill is not and never was the thin man. He is. He never has been. Most of the men I can't believe what we see in the movie just for the record. The thin man was murdered in the first thin man picture. We haven't seen him since. Except in the title where he seems amazing, you're healthy.
What's the name? Well, the picture by any name you like. So long as you and Bill remain as our favorite detectives. What's going to happen next to Nora and Nick? Well, there's another thin man picture plan that we haven't started making it yet. It's called the Shuttle of the thin man, very promising man hunt. I have entire confidence in both of you. By the way, Cecil, did not I hear you say that you're going to do showboat next week? You said, mid-air bill, and we are. Who's going to be in your cast, Mr. DeMille? We'll have Irene Dunn, Alan Jones and Charles Winninger. They were all in the cast of the motion picture, and they were all be here on this stage. To bring us the exciting drama of showboat and the great science hits by Jerome Kern. We embark at the usual time next Monday night for this cruise of adventure and romance along the Mississippi. And we hope you're all beyond board. Showboat is flatly at command, or listen. Goodnight Cecil. Goodnight. Good night. Good night. Good night.
Good night. Before you say on another face, Sir. Our sponsors, the makers of Muck's Cake, won the Indian and High-Hailers' Awards again next Monday night. And the Muck's Radio Theater presents Irene Dunn, Alan Jones and Charles Winninger in showboat. Mrs. Cecil beat Emerson saying, good night to you from Hollywood. Third in tonight's play, where Julie Bannon as Selma, that Mackay as David, it would Mars, Abrams, Mary Luc Simpson as probably. Warren Ash as dancer, Wally Mayor as Lumb Key, and Arthur Cubrion, Haybremils, Water White, In a Seaberry, Tristan Coffin, Eric Snowton, Russell Fillmore,
Lou Merrill and Fed Shields. The American Red Cross needs millions of dollars for European war relief work. They're asking for your contribution now. Anything you can give. The place to give, your local Red Cross chapter, the time, as soon as you possibly can. William Powell and Meneloy, appeared tonight through the courtesy of Lettal Gould and Mayor. They were soon be seen together on the screen. And if I love you again, our music was directed by Lois Silver's and your announcer has been Melville Roy. This is the Columbia Red Cross theme system.
