That's Christmas, but it's not Christ (chapter 53)

About this episode

This is my attempt at a Christmas special, although I admit I may come across as a Grinch or a Scrooge. Please bear with me until the end of the episode to see that (hopefully) that's not the case.

Episode 39 looks at chapter 53, which is primarily a critique of the materialism and hoarding of the rich and ruling class. I start by considering how our own materialistic distortion of the Christmas season draws us away from the very simple and powerful truths that Advent is meant to communicate.

The rest of the episode is divided into three parts:

  1. The simplicity of the Way and how easily we are distracted from it
  2. Two of the greatest distractions in life: power and wealth
  3. That's Christmas, but it's not Christ - taking this chapter beyond finger-pointing at the elite and using it to examine our own hearts
