Texans Move On From Jerrod Johnson — Schuplinski & Caley To Coach C.J. Stroud

The Houston Texans have parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, according to reports from Adam Schefter — ending a unique and longstanding mentorship with franchise QB C.J. Stroud.

Johnson and Stroud’s relationship goes back years before the NFL, dating to the Elite 11 quarterback camp where Johnson helped coach and evaluate Stroud as one of the nation’s top high school prospects. Since Houston drafted Stroud in 2023, the two maintained a close bond, with Stroud often praising Johnson’s communication, support, and ability to relate as a former quarterback.

Despite that connection, Johnson became a focal point of criticism from some fans as Stroud faced higher expectations and inconsistency following his historic Rookie of the Year season.

Houston conducted a broad offensive staff evaluation after the season, initially only parting ways with tight ends coach Jake Moreland. The timing of Johnson’s departure nearly a month later raised questions — but new reporting from KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson indicates offensive coordinator Nick Caley and senior offensive assistant Jerry Schuplinski will work together to coach Stroud rather than hiring a direct replacement.

Schuplinski brings extensive experience working with elite quarterbacks, including Tom Brady in New England and Matthew Stafford with the Rams.
