It's March 3rd in Tampa Bay. Let's get into the news. Tax season is right around the corner with the April 15th deadline, looming for millions of Americans. A new Wallet Hub study ranks all 50 states and Washington DC by overall tax burden. They looked at real estate taxes, vehicle property taxes, income taxes and sales plus excise taxes to see where folks pay the most or least. The rankings come from applying effective tax rates to the average Americans income. Woodhub pulled data as of February 3rd, 2026 from sources like the US Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Tax, Foundation. Living in a high tax state can mean a bigger hit to your wallet compared to low tax areas. For example, residents in places like Illinois face steeper combined bills across those categories while others enjoy lighter loads that leave more, money in pockets. Getting the pack for highest overall tax rates are Illinois in first place, New York 2nd, Connecticut 3rd, Pennsylvania 4th and New Jersey.
5th, on the flip side, Alaska tops the lowest rates followed by Delaware, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. If you're curious about your state, full lists are available on Wallet Hub. As you gather your documents, keep an eye on these differences. They could influence big life choices like where to live or retire.
