talks about Devers' impressive stats, including his 35 home runs and 36 doubles, and how he's been a game-changer for the team
About this episode
This week on the podcast, the conversation is all about the Giants' impressive 8-7 record in their last 15 games, and the standout performances of Rafael Devers and Bryce Eldridge. The speaker is joined by Duane Kuiper, a Giants legend and current broadcaster, to break down the team's recent success and discuss the impact of Devers' incredible hitting.
Kuiper shares his thoughts on the Giants' current winning streak, and how it's been a team effort with contributions from young players like Eldridge. He also talks about Devers' impressive stats, including his 35 home runs and 36 doubles, and how he's been a game-changer for the team. The conversation also touches on the challenges Devers has faced in the past, including a slow start to the season, and how he's overcome them to become one of the top players in the league.
The discussion also delves into the topic of umpires and their impact on the game, with Kuiper sharing his thoughts on the recent ejection of Tony V and the challenges of the ABS system. He also talks about the importance of players like Eldridge, who's been making a name for himself as a defensive first baseman.

Time for Murphy and Marcus to catch up with Kai on KNBR104 by VAM and 6-E-A-N. Let's go! Let's go! We are in the final month of Giants Baseball and Man with that lockout looming. We got a treasure every one of them, so let's go three hours and 29 minutes on a Labor Day. Five o'clock start with some shadows and maybe some cardinals who are fighting for their lives.
And the Giants out here outlasting them. Beat them in 11, 5 to 4, dealt a blow to the Cardinals season. So the Giants are 8 and 7, their last 15. Marcus and I were wondering if that's the best 15 game stretch in the season. We didn't look it up. We're just guessing. Wayne Kiper is here to talk about it all in the UMA guest line. Kipe, good morning, happy Tuesday, another Kipe win. Tuesday morning, you're on a roll, buddy. Good morning. Hey, morning, Kipe. I am on a roll, but I didn't get the broadcast yet. That's true. That's true. You know, I was on the plane. I was flying back from the East Coast and I had it on my YouTube TV. And it was Dave on NBC. It was Dave and Hunter Pence and Albert Poole also. No Kipe. Yeah. They did a good job. I think NBC's, you know, they've. Showed signs that they can pull this off. I mean, look. All those years I was playing. I mean, it was the NBC game of the week. It was it. So yeah. And then they took a hiatus for a while, but I'm glad they're back.
And and say what you want. I'm biased as all can get. Find me a better playback play guy in TV than Dave Fleming. You're not going to find one. Well, I mean, what about the guy I'm talking to? Find me a better guy than Dave Fleming. Flems awesome. He's great. And Hunter's getting better too. Hunter's getting better. And there was some real good baseball talk. Adam out of Eno was down on the field and he was adding some pretty darn good pitching breakdowns. Like it was good baseball talk. Like they were talking about the game. And what's the play should be? And you know, so yeah. And plus, I mean, if you have the right cameras. And if you can have a drone. Yeah. It's hard to not look at that ballpark and say that's the best park in baseball. Dave Dave, you're not Dave. You're Dwayne. Kipe. I was in San Diego this summer. And I was with a fellow youth sports dad. He'd never been there. He goes, oh, this place is unbelievable. It's easily the best park in the bigs.
And I said, dude, you got to stop right now. Have you? I mean, Kipe, every time I go, every time I go, I'm blown away, particularly if you park in Laudet and you walk through McCovie. And that new park they have out there and you look across the cove at the stadium. It's number one, Dwayne. Well, I think there's a. I think we're here today game and the sunshine. I mean, I do think that that shows a stadium off a little better than if it's foggy and it looks cold. You know, you get these night games and that's what people are seeing on the East Coast. But you really have to experience a day game and you can get a nice temperature around so many degrees. Look, I'll argue that the Padres have got the second best facility around and maybe the pirates, the third, but you're not going to convince me that. That our yard is the best out there. The only problem with the ballpark last night is that it took away a home run from Rafael Devers.
He got orcota off the bricks, a ball that would have been out in 29 of 30 ball parks. But hey, that's part of the problem at playing at Orca Park. But let's talk about Rafael Devers with that double 36 doubles on the year. First, Giants have 35 home runs and 36 doubles in a season since Jeff Kent in 2002. We talked last week about how he has the most home runs in Barry bonds in 2004. With this type of heater that Rafael Devers is on right now with hitting his 34th and 35th home run of the season. And Kaip, do you think there's a chance that he gets 40 home runs by the end of this season? Well, I didn't think he was going to get to 100 RBI's, but he's going to do that. It all depends upon if the league allows him. You know, the league did everything they could to keep Barry bonds from hitting them all out of the park and they did that very simply by walking in. And I shocked that the there was a couple of situations in the game last night where you could have easily walked down with a base open. And they chose not to and it's what as you said about 430 feet.
He might get 40. You're right. But like I said, it's going to have to be if pictures decide that they're going to go after them or not. It helps so that Elgurge is it behind him. I would have had 3 RBI's in the game last night. I mean, no, there's a done a lineup. They don't win. Plus, he made a nice play at first. So all in all, that's a really nice two combination right now. And you know, all of a sudden now we don't think Elgurge is one of the kids. That keeps younger than half the kids out there. But that's just because of what his production is and and you know how big he is. He's just a big, big guy and he moves around really well. Abs, I was all geared up for my Marcus asked about Devers. I was going to hit this price to talk about last night's game, but probably that quickly on Devers 35 homers and 36 doubles now. I'm trying to do that. Hall of Famer Jeff Kent in 2002.
So it's been almost a quarter century since that happened. And his 92 RBI's are second to Buster Posey's 95 in 2015. He'll pass that. So he's going to pass that and shoot for 100. So anyway, but back to a price. Well, no, no, just one second. Yeah. You guys remember it may have been last week. Or the week before that where the reds were in town. And I told you guys what one of the reds and answers. I said to me when I asked him. How many home runs Devers would hit in Cincinnati. Yeah. And without hesitation, they said 45 easy. So that's what happens in this part. You're going to get. It's not just for 15. It's the. It's the the air at night. When you tag one and it looks like it's going to go out in center field and it just falls up short. So really what he's doing is remarkable. It's a lot like what. Barry did all these years where.
A lot of guys are trying really hard to play in this park and do well. And then there's these one or two guys that just make it look easy. And that's what he's doing right now. Chevy is called the heartbeat of America for a reason. And Silverado keeps its rhythm. You feel it in the turbo max engine with best in class standard torque. So home 260 at bats away 286 at bats. So more home runs 18 away 17 home. That's a 26 fewer a B's. So it's absolutely no different and then RBI's 36 on the road 56 at home.
And then the final one is just OPS which you know 867 on the road 860 at home. The guy has conquered the cove. He told us Kipe on the day one when he has that way, you know, through Irwin, Hageros. He kind of has that look where he kind of shrugs his shoulders and has kind of puffs his cheeks out and brightens. He's like, it's no big deal. I'm fine. I'll hit wherever I hit. And I was like, OK, well, I think he's made good on that. I think he has. I mean, I think look, the. You know, the downside to divers is he just got off to such a horrible start. And and that's kind of his history and. You know, if you. I don't know what this is as eighth year or whatever. I mean, if he eight years in a row gets off to a slow start, you have to expect that. And I'd like to know how many of those years maybe he did get off to a decent start. Because as a team.
I mean, you want to get off to a decent start. You just don't want to flop. And basically that's kind of what happened with the Giants were. They got behind the eight ball so soon. But it just couldn't. I mean, remember those. Weeks where we were trying to get to 500 and then get over 500 and. I just couldn't do it. And it was all because of the slow start. You know, that old expression is is, you know, you can't. You know, lose your season in the month of April. Yeah, you can. Yeah, you can. Yeah, yeah, that's a great. It would be helpful if he could get off to a good start next year. Like we said, they're eight and seven. I think the last 15, it's all these young kids out there hustling, Drew Cavinaw's laying down, bunch. I mean, everything's going well, but I do want to talk about Bryce. Because the pick on the Christian cost has a little bit of the yips going on. I think over a short and he made a really poor throw for a major league or at a critical time.
And Bryce picked it. And it was not an easy pick. Poohol's in the booth was saying that was not an easy one. He speared a line drive that Logan Webb. Logan pitch great, except for the one, you know, home run for Berlison to end the sixth inning, but Eldridge was right there to do it. He stretched his feet to catch another one. I think from Besabe showing off his six. So I guess what I'm getting at, Kipe, is that this dude is turning into a defensive first baseman like for real. Like you're not even like treating him with kid gloves. Like it's legit. Yeah, you know, the unfortunate thing and we know, know the story about he never played anything in high school, except he pitched. And oh, well, what about basketball? No, he didn't play basketball either. So he never really got a chance to show that he is a good athlete. And I think that's what he's showing right now. I don't think he's ever going to be that smooth athlete that you see on a left handed hitters. But that doesn't matter. Just because
of his size, you know, you think of him as going to be a power guy. He's going to be the 35. He's not. He's going to be your doubles guy. He's going to knock in a lot of runs. And he's going to hit 25. And then that's the bottom of the bar. I mean, he could go way beyond that, too. And you know, we forget, you know, he's 21. He looks like he's 29, but he's 21. And that makes a big difference. Yeah, Kai, you're absolutely right after reminding myself all the time that he's still the youngest player on the roster, I believe, but it doesn't feel like that because of his performance on the field. And then the way that he talks off the field. And I know we've talked about Rafael Devers stepping up recently as a leader. Are you seeing any of that from a 21 year old Bryce Eldridge with some of these other younger guys getting these opportunities? Well, you can be at that age, but it's only going to be to the younger guys. And now there's a lot of younger guys and there's younger guys coming in every day. And if you're at every day player and you're as young as Eldridge,
then those younger guys that come into town, you know, they're going to look at you and they're going to see what are you made of and do I want to act like him? And that's a yes and yes answer. He's terrific with the media. It doesn't look like it's a chore for him to do interviews. It's like he's happy to do it. And, and you know, he's got something to say. He also was really complimentary of Devers today in the paper. They'd, I think walked Devers yesterday and Devers was giving him a big push as he was tossing his bat down headed to first. Like you do. I mean, hey, they just walked me to get to you. And, and Eldridge made a comment that, yeah, you know what? I'm digging old Rafi Devers and so are we.

It's incredible that this is the story that's kind of evolved. It just took a year to really get settled. Now he's crushing the ball and being a great teammate and all that good stuff. They noted on the broadcast last night that he locked eyes with Devers. I mean with Eldridge after that walk like dude, this is your time. So just a great growing moment for them. Hey, we didn't there's so much has happened since we last talked to you last week, but Tony V got ejected again. It's getting crazy. He's like, wait a minute, they told me I got to come out of the dugout. So I came out of the dugout then they tossed me for coming out of the dugout. I mean, I know we've
talked about this before, but it keeps happening. Did you have an opinion on the weekend one in New York? Well, look, I don't know if you heard the met's broadcasters. This is an East Coast. This is an East Coast broadcast, right? And they tore apart the empires on how they treated by Tello. You're talking about Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez. I think that they would have a decent opinion, given the fact of how they played and how long they played and how good they were. And they were really good in the booths too, by the way. And you know, I totally agree to them. I mean, back off, give the guy some room. One day the empires says, you got to come out of the dugout to argue. Otherwise, he'll throw you out. You go to New York, you get thrown out. When you come out of the dugout,
I mean, it's like, what are we doing? I don't think they're allowing him to be who he is. And I think that that's the most upsetting part of it. I don't think empires have allowed him to see the type of guy he is on the field. But you know, he's going to have to conquer this and he'll get better next year. But it really has been awful to watch what's happened. And it's awful that our empires are doing that to him. By the way, this haven't bad year, too. There's some bad calls last night. There was a call that, I think Turner Hill was safe. Was it Jonah Cox? One of the guys was safe. They called him out. The replay was pretty easy. He was off the bag. There were a lot of ABS misses last night that didn't even get challenged. I think they're performing poorly, too. Well, I mean, look, the obvious ones are the ones that are going to hurt. It's going to make
empires look bad. And then you do have to kind of ask yourself, well, they get all the other ones right. I thought the Doug Eddies one was the one that was probably the most upsetting when he forced that, I think, Dominican kid to put his hat on straight. You imagine in the late 80s, if an empire would have told Griffey to turn his hat around, well, basically that's what he's doing. And of course later, the lead really forced him to apologize. And so I look, I admire all the empires, I think, for the most part, they do a good job. But in a lot of ways, this challenge system in this ABS system will make it really good. Empires look good. And the empires that aren't so good, it also challenges them. And sometimes doesn't make them look very good at all. Yeah, yeah. All right. Well, listen,
your partner's coming on at 815. So we're going to let you go. But I just need to get your final take. What do you think of the new painting on the left field wall? What is the painting? Oh, you haven't seen it. It's a likeness of your lifelong partner and best friend with the words at a babe crew exclamation point. Where is it on the left field right field wall like underneath the bricks? Oh, my bad. Yeah. I saw it on a picture. I assumed it was on the green pad. It's about right center field on the screen pads right there. Okay. Good knowledge. Yeah. Look like them. Yeah, it does. It looks good. I'm going to send it to you. All right. Send it to me. And you know what? I'm going to send you. I'm going to send you. I saw it the other day. I think on Instagram. It was like 1987. Don Zimmer getting kicked out of a game in Montreal while he was still in the dugout. And it's kind of a way to show young managers how you
argue with umpires. So I'm going to send that to you. I'll look forward to that very much. Big Don Zimmer fan. He was the manager of the 78 Red Sox. One of my one of my one of my seminal teams when I was a kid. And he was arguing. I wanted to jump in there and through my phone and get my hug. Well, maybe we'll show this to Tony then, right? I said it today to show to Tony. Okay. Good. Awesome. When they were on the road. So I don't know if you show it to me or not. And I said it to my chism too. Anyway, we're going to send you this picture of Mike on the wall. You'll see it tonight. Well, I'm sitting next to him tonight. You think we're going to have to talk about it? Absolutely. They're going to uh, can you? Okay, I'm going to send it to you right now. Hey, I'm going to mark a send this to me. You know, you know the, you know the, the chalk that your kids used to use on your sidewalk? Yeah. I'm going to do that. I'm going to go out and stick man in myself right up right next to him.
Let's do it. Uh, so we'll have this beautiful artistic shot of Mike and a stick figure of you. Yeah. That'll be it. Yeah. That'd be good. All right. Uh, boom. Mark. All right. Well, uh, I'm going to send it to you right now and we'll get your take tonight on the air. Be good. Dwayne. You got it. Thanks. All right, guys.
